To agree with Katie Hopkins?

I know, I know!!
Turned on Radio2, initially had no idea who it was and found myself nodding along to every word.

As a 'fatty' myself I had to agree with all she said. I did this to myself. I like food, especially junk food waaay too much. I hate exercise a lot. Nobody to blame but me.

The horror of agreeing with her may, possibly, finally force me to get off my arse and do something about it though I will never in RL admit that she has made me wake up and realise this is all on me

All I would add, as clearly she cannot be completely right and understanding life in anyone else's shoes, that her circumstance is different to mine.

My weight crept on gradually over the years.
My mindset has never been to actively put weight on with the intention of losing it again, I simply developed bad habits over a long time.

Just drink only water. It's very cheap and best for you.

livegoldrings · 02/01/2015 18:59

I am doing an experiment to prove eating too much can make you fat too, mine is more rigorous than KH's as I have been conducting it for several years. At the moment I am gathering data on biscuits and roast potatoes, both of which may be fattening if you eat too many, I will let you know about that. Boxes of chocolates left over from Christmas are on my list to test out next. I am also testing out if watching T.V on the sofa is more or less healthy than going for a walk. So far inconclusive so I will have to find someone to go for a walk and also a control group to do the washingup.
Katie Hopkins would look better if she gained about a stone, wouldn't she?

livegoldrings · 02/01/2015 19:02

Oh yes I am going to test drinks also, which is best for you coke, diet coke, wine or coffee? I think it will be wine as that is supposed to be really good for your heart.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 02/01/2015 19:03

You've already admitted you're wrong and that takes guts so you don't need me on your back. However what I will say is, yes I'm fat and yes I guess you could say I did it to myself. However it is my body not Katie Hopkins and I can use and abuse my own body anyway I choose to. I may be fat but she is ugly, and I can if I wanted to loose weight, but I have no desire to.
Nothing is as simple as she makes out. I will say on here though agree with anything she says and prepare for a flaming she is not a likable person. What did the fruit loop say, I don't like it when children are named after countries, ERM WTF is she to dictate what anyone should call their kids and has she never heard of a place called India.

herethereandeverywhere · 02/01/2015 19:07

Not sure if this has been mentioned already but Caitlin Moran talks about overeating in her How to be a Woman book. She describes it as the crutch/drug of choice of people who need to function and remain in control of their lives (to earn money, care for kids, care for family) but that overeating (junk food, carbs, sugar) provides a similar hit without checking out of society like an alcoholic or drug addict.

It's effectively an addiction with psychological causes. So I agree with those saying that Hopkins proved nothing - except that when your mind is well you can control overeating compulsion.

Wow...what an interesting perspective. I think it's a great point.

Snappynewyear · 02/01/2015 19:14

Even if she said couples should be loving and understanding to their children and pets, I would want to hit her!

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2015 19:24

The reason Britain is the second fattest country in Europe is not because of a mental health epidemic; it's because of our culture.

I agree 100%

I don't think the obesity epidemic will really change until people generally come to realise this and take responsibility for their own actions.

Yes of course it can be complicated for some and no, it isn't always easy but essentially I think nothing will change until individual responsibility is taken.

livegoldrings · 02/01/2015 19:33

I just did an experiment to see if junk food products made millions for rich company owners and diet products also made millions do they cancel each other out, but the results were inconclusive so I ate a piece of Iceland chocolate toffee meringue while reading Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's new book light and easy to see if those cancel each other out. I think I have achieved Carbon Neutral.

fatlazymummy · 02/01/2015 19:33

I completely agree with worraliberty.
Just as an observation, and not attacking or criticising any poster, I've noticed far more defensiveness and sensitivity on obesity on this forum than any of the others I use or lurk on. I don't know why that is.

GraysAnalogy · 02/01/2015 19:37

Same fatlazy. Ive found it more difficult to speak about weight on here than I do with my clients 1 to 1.

Agree with worra, again.

Chocolateteacake · 02/01/2015 19:40

Changing topic slightly... I thought DH was winding me up about her venomous comments about the scottish nurse with Ebola being flown to a London hospital for treatment (remember - people have died in the US of ebola) but there she was in the paper today with reports if her waffling on about jocks and sweaty Glaswegians.

She really shouldn't be allowed out, that woman. And did I see her mug on the front of a magazine in an advert? Was that the 'I'm miss bossy and know everything about dieting that everyone else including the diet industry doesn't know'?

GraysAnalogy · 02/01/2015 19:41

And whilst eating is a complex issue for some, as a society I think we massively other think it instead of simply realising that we eat too much and move too little.

That's the crux of it. It might not be easy to combat excess weight or to maintain optimum weight; but for the majority of people it can be simplified to those to things.

Personally to a large degree I think Caitlin Moran is just spouting psycho babble. There doesn't have to be a deep seated issue for everything. I eat because I like food. I took drugs once upon a time because I liked them. I drink because I like that. Nothing to do with power.

RufusTheReindeer · 02/01/2015 19:43

lapetit

For someone who is 5 foot 7 bottom end of bmi is 9 stone 6

Too end of bmi is 11 stone 6

(Ish)

So you are right, she was only about a stone overweight at her highest

KingJarethsBulge · 02/01/2015 19:46

I have eating issues.
I watched my mum being locked away in a mental health hospital, numerous times, between the ages of 8-17.
I also watched her suffer a horrible, slowly agonising death of lung cancer aged 18
I was bullied at school for being fat and having a learning difficulty.
I cut my wrists. When people started to notice, I started cutting my upper thighs instead
When I was in my late teens until ealy 20s I made myself vomit every time I ate something. I now have an ulcerated oesophagus, a hiatal hernia and ripped stomach lining. My teeth are breaking off and my hair is falling out. I'm mid-20s.

I am still fat, despite having bulimia.

Glad to know people like Katie Hopkins judge me on my appearance.

GraysAnalogy · 02/01/2015 19:51

Everyone is judged on their appearance. As tragic as your story is king (and i am so so sorry you have to go through that) it's part of life.

Someone with an unkempt appearance is seen as lazy or dirty - people don't think they may be depressed and unable to maintain it.

Thin people are judged. Fat people are judged.

LokiBear · 02/01/2015 19:58

I had CBT for Bulimia, King. It's hard work but I beat it and I'm now a healthy weight. Go and see your GP. Ignore Katie Hopkins. She is moronic.

WorraLiberty · 02/01/2015 19:59

Grays is right, King.

Sadly people will always be judged on their appearance no matter whether they are fat or thin.

You only have to look at some of the threads on MumsNet regarding celebrities, to see their appearances being ripped to absolute shreds.

Their weight/hair/make-up/clothes/teeth....you name it and people will judge it.

KingJarethsBulge · 02/01/2015 19:59

Yes I know :) I just meant it's not as simple as pointing the finger at someone and saying "you're fat, its all your fault" and judging them, like that Hopkins woman. That' all.

KingJarethsBulge · 02/01/2015 20:01

That's*

livegoldrings · 02/01/2015 20:01

Just did yet another scientific thingie to show that women named Katie have a 200% higher chance of writing a column in The Sun than any other female, this proves women named Katie are really worth listening to when it comes to losing weight/the health of our nation as a whole/Peter Andre etc.

whereismagic · 02/01/2015 20:02

Overproducing and overeating is also a moral issue for both distributors and customers because if everybody is paid a decent wage for their labour and everything is produced responsibly then a frozen cake from Iceland simply can't cost £1.

youllshootyoureyeout · 02/01/2015 20:02

Whether or not it is a "part of life" as you say Grey it shouldn't be. I for one am bringing my children up not to judge others by their appearance and behaviours alone. My dd's best friend is overweight (and very, fit and very intelligent) and dd gets so angry when she is picked on, she also feels the same about a boy in her class who has special needs, she refuses to treat him like a joke just because the rest of her class do.

It is never ok to judge.

KingJarethsBulge · 02/01/2015 20:02

Well done Loki or beating your bulimia :) That's fantastic you had the confidence to come forward and get the help you needed. For me, I am too ashamed and this is my dirty secret :(

FloatIsRechargedNow · 02/01/2015 20:03

If I was Katie Hopkins and made my money through being controversial and was aware of the concentrated hatred for my views here on MN, I would milk it for everything and stir it up some more - because it's so easy and would make my job so much easier.

I'm not her and really don't know who she is much - she used to live in Biddy I think? Me too - not too many jobs there, so you do what you can do. Really, for what I know she's some kind of comedic-diluted-WillSelfishy-thingy. Not sure why you all get so het up about her.

Lots of fat people in Biddy, wierd as it's on hills, and not everyone has cars, so they walk up and down them a lot, often pushing or pulling something or other. Maybe that affected her viewpoint?
