I know, I know!!
Turned on Radio2, initially had no idea who it was and found myself nodding along to every word.

As a 'fatty' myself I had to agree with all she said. I did this to myself. I like food, especially junk food waaay too much. I hate exercise a lot. Nobody to blame but me.

The horror of agreeing with her may, possibly, finally force me to get off my arse and do something about it though I will never in RL admit that she has made me wake up and realise this is all on me

All I would add, as clearly she cannot be completely right and understanding life in anyone else's shoes, that her circumstance is different to mine.

My weight crept on gradually over the years.
My mindset has never been to actively put weight on with the intention of losing it again, I simply developed bad habits over a long time.

She really has proved nothing

Boxers for example have been gaining/losing weight rapidly for years, depending on which weight category they want to fight in.

As a 'fatty' myself I had to agree with all she said. I did this to myself. I like food, especially junk food waaay too much. I hate exercise a lot. Nobody to blame but me.

Yes, this ^^ is true for a large and rapidly rising amount of people in the UK (though obviously not all fat people). However, I'm not sure why it took KH to make you realise this?

It's blindingly obvious to many people, so I'm not sure why any TV station would give her the time of day.

newyearsresolutionsnotforme · 02/01/2015 14:32

YANBU to agree with her regarding yourself if you feel she is correct. YWBU if you generalised like she does. She's a very unpleasant woman.

Pyjamaramadrama · 02/01/2015 14:33

I don't really know what she's up to this time, but I gather from the comments that she's deliberately gained weight, then lost it, to prove that fat people eat too much or something? She's been paid for this?

It's all very boring really, eat less move more and you'll probably weigh less, everyone knows this anyway. Everyone loses and gains weight differently, some people have medical conditions or are on medication which makes them bigger/smaller. Some people have other problems which result in them over/under eating. There are societal factors too.

I think it's all very boring, fat shaming is very boring and I doubt it helps anyone.

LokiBear · 02/01/2015 14:44

What makes me furious is that whilst her 'eat less, move more' stance is right on the money, (hardly rocket science tbf) she then scoffs and laughs at 'fatties' who will be starting a running program or joining a gym this month. She can't have it both ways. I am slim, so have no reason to take her hideous 'anti-fat people' comments personally, and if she were being supportive and encouraging then that would be fine. However, she just swings from malicious comment to malicious comment because she can. She actually undermines her own arguments by being so nasty.

ithoughtofitfirst · 02/01/2015 14:51

Quite Loki couldn't agree more.

Like my 2 year old says: "I can't like her".

HelenaDove · 02/01/2015 14:52

Bloody Channel 4 has a programme starting called Weighing Up The Enemy. Yes you read that right. They are pitting overweight people against each other. This is the same channel that is currently running a trailer patting themselves on the back congratulating themselves on their diversity Confused In the 80s and 90s perhaps but certainly not now.

And if there was a programme pitting drug addicts or alcoholics against each other like this imagine the outcry.

But overweight people.....hell yeah thats ok= the "safe prejudice"

newyearsresolutionsnotforme · 02/01/2015 15:00

HelenaDove The sad thing is I don't expect their would be an outcry. It seems like watching people tear each other down and apart is all good sport so others can laugh and be glad they aren't them. Sad.

Ever watched 'Black Mirror'? It's scary the way it depicts the world going but it's looking truer day by day.

HelenaDove · 02/01/2015 15:05

Black Mirror is great. Its also on Channel 4 Seems they cant/dont want to see the irony themselves though!

DecaffCoffeeAndRollupsPlease · 02/01/2015 15:11

Let me kick her too!

Seriously though, she's vile.

FoodieMum3 · 02/01/2015 15:20

I actually agree and disagree with what she says.

I agree with her saying that most people are fat because they eat too much and don't move enough. If they ate less and exercised more they would lose weight. Absolutely correct. I do hear overweight people make excuses a lot.

However, anyone who is 3 stone overweight isn't fat because they ate or eat 6,000 calories a day just for the sake or fun of it. That's the difference. Why an obese person consumes so much food will vary from person to person, but it's very often psychological and emotional issues leading a person to over eat IMO. Also, the more overweifht you become (IME) the more confidence and self worth you lose, so you're not even interested in losing weight or taking care of yourself and in fact you continue to eat more.

I suspect she knows that too though and is basically just a professional troll but despite that, I probably will tune in.

ScrumpyBetty · 02/01/2015 15:34

I do agree that Katie is a Trollop who should not be given any airtime and yes her experiment was far too simplistic
It is also too simplistic to say that it is easy for all overweight people to lose the weight just like that without taking in to account other physical and mental health issues...
But I think as a country we do have a weight problem....I mean one in four children starting primary school are one significantly overweight- this is not something which we should just shrug our shoulders at, I think it is a problem. Obviously there are a myriad of complex reasons as to why people are becoming more overweight but yes I do think at the heart of it, many of us are eating more food, especially more processed junk foods and excercising less and yes this is a problem. People who are overweight are more prone to other health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure etc and it puts a huge strain on the NHS. As do other bad habits, such as smoking too much and drinking too much- we can't place blame solely on the overweight population.

formerbabe · 02/01/2015 15:40

It is just not as simple as eat less, move more. Food and emotions are strongly linked. No one tells drug addicts to just stop buying and taking the drugs.

Weight is often just the symptom of a much bigger issue.

AuntieStella · 02/01/2015 15:42

I can't see anything in OP that's not been said since at least 1970s.

So I think YABU to give any more weight to it being said by any one of the proponents than any of the others.

But YANBU to realise that for many (but not all) people, weight is a direct result of long-term eating habits. And those habits can be changed. That idea is at the heart of much of the 'slimming industry' and the 'detox industry'. You can follow one of those approaches if it pleases you (and if it works for you) or you could save your money and adopt habits from the (free) government advice of: eat at least 5 a day, eat less but eat a variety of foods, move more, drink alcohol only in moderation.

That might not help if you have an underlying health issue. But will work for many, many people.

newyearsresolutionsnotforme · 02/01/2015 15:48

poster HelenaDove That is very true! After seeing the 'blocking facility' in the new special, it really freaked me out.

GraysAnalogy · 02/01/2015 15:51

I think that as a society we seem to have lost a sense of responsibility for ourselves.

I understand some people have problems that make them gain weight or harder to lose, but these are in more the minority then we think. There was a study not long ago in which a family of morbidly obese people used the excuse of having an under active thyroid. When tests were done it was found they actually had over active thyroid.

I could blame my depression, my medication, my shitty childhood, being abused... But I know that it's just because I eat and drink more energy than I burn off.

Obviously there are people with deep seated issues that make it more difficult than the average person - but that doesn't mean there's no responsibility.

However losing weight isn't easy. Not at all. I'm overweight - discussed this in a previous thread and its hard. so so hard.

RandomNPC · 02/01/2015 15:56

The only time I'd agree with this dreadful woman is when she has a long overdue flash of self awareness and buggers off to Dignitas takes a Trappist vow of silence.

xvxvxvxvxvxvxvxv · 02/01/2015 15:59

Her experiment is irrelevant because all she had to do was loose the weight. She has the money and free time to join a gym etc it's as if loosing weight was a full time job.
I'd like to see her try to loose it whilst also having a full time job, having to do housework shopping washing etc using public transport, no budget for the gym, a small food budget with others to cook for and living somewhere with a tiny kitchen and no access to sushi smoothies and other filing delicious slimming foods and snacks.

I say this as someone who isn't overweight so not making excuses. It's obvious she only did it to have something to bash overweight people with. Oh I can do it so they're all liars. Well she's not living their lives as to purposely put weight on so you can bully people shows what a nasty person she is.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 02/01/2015 16:02

There are many people stuck in awful cycles. They have health conditions, unrelated to obesity, that make exercise very difficult or impossible. They go to their doctors, who tell them they cannot have treatment or proper pain relief until they lose weight. They can't lose weight because they already eat next to nothing, they just can't exercise due to pain.

If only "eat less, exercise more" was so simple in practice.

GraysAnalogy · 02/01/2015 16:03

If I had money I'd probably lose weight fast like she did.

She once retweeted me. Am I famouz

Pyjamaramadrama · 02/01/2015 16:07

I totally agree xvxvxv, I drives me crazy when these 'celebs' drone on about how they lost weight and their fabulous diets consisting of foods your average person has never even heard of.

I also say that as someone who isn't overweight, but I'm sure anyone could be fit and fabulous with access to £££, a chef and a personal trainer. We'd all be more inclined to cook more if we had huge beautiful kitchens, nannies and the time and money to experiment with different ingredients.

That's not to say that your average person can't lose weight and eat healthily, but it's also a lot harder for your average person.

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2015 16:12

I heard that interview, she spent no money losing the weight, just went running that was because she wanted to prove it could be done.

I don't think she's very pleasant but she has a point.

Ujjayi · 02/01/2015 16:16

I cannot see the point of her little project because it doesn't add anything new to the obesity debate.

However, I do think that too many people blame weight gain on complex emotions when it can also be due in many cases to people just liking junk food & not being bothered with eating for health.

There are too many people who do not want to take responsibility for their own health & play the "I can't help it, it isn't my fault" card. I have a medical condition which makes me prone to both weight gain & depression. Exercise helps both those things. I don't relish the thought of daily exercise but it is better than the alternative. Exercise is free - get out & walk, run or follow an online/YouTube class.

I have been fat twice in my life - once through my own greed & once due to medication. Both times I lost the weight through healthy eating (NOT low calorie counting "diets") and exercise. The meds flatlined my metabolism & it took several months of finding the right exercise & eating plan to kick start it back to life. But that was MY responsibility to do that - not my GP nor any other person.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 02/01/2015 16:16

I can't believe she gets paid for her opinions and that anyone even listens to her.

She hasn't proved anything with gaining and losing that weight so quickly. She didn't binge eat long enough for it to become a habit. How many of us put on a few pounds on holiday then lose it when we return to everyday lives of working and dashing around.

She's a silly bitch who sometimes wears dresses I wouldn't put a toddler in.

AndyWarholsOrange · 02/01/2015 16:18

Did anyone see what she wrote on Twitter about the nurse with Ebola? Normally I just ignore her but that really was plumbing the depths, even for her. I just don't see how she can sink any lower without being jailed for some sort of hate crime.
She may or may not have a point about being overweight but the fact is that the reason she's doing this is to prove that fat people are all greedy and lazy. Nice.

Ujjayi · 02/01/2015 16:23

She didn't lose the weight via gym or personal chef.

You don't need to incorporate the latest faddy foods to lose weight. Last year's goji berry will give way to quinoa or some other miracle food but seriously, only a fool gets too het up on this stuff.

Portion size & eating more protein/less carbs, and drinking enough water so you don't mistake thirst for hunger (very common).
