To agree with Katie Hopkins?

I know, I know!!
Turned on Radio2, initially had no idea who it was and found myself nodding along to every word.

As a 'fatty' myself I had to agree with all she said. I did this to myself. I like food, especially junk food waaay too much. I hate exercise a lot. Nobody to blame but me.

The horror of agreeing with her may, possibly, finally force me to get off my arse and do something about it though I will never in RL admit that she has made me wake up and realise this is all on me

All I would add, as clearly she cannot be completely right and understanding life in anyone else's shoes, that her circumstance is different to mine.

My weight crept on gradually over the years.
My mindset has never been to actively put weight on with the intention of losing it again, I simply developed bad habits over a long time.

I cannot believe the woman who she had the 'debate' with walked out and rang the police for 'hate crime against fat people'.

Her feelings must have been hurt and that's horrible, but seriously?

Bartlebee · 02/01/2015 16:27

I am interested in her little project and will definitely be watching that program tonight.

However, all she has proved is that if you overheat and under exercise you will gain weight and vice versa.

Most fat people are fat because they have complex issues with regard to body image and eating.

She has the mindset of a thin person, it doesn't really help to simplify it like this, although it is interesting.

I heard her interview on Jeremy Vine a while ago and I thought she came across quite well.

MrsItsNoworNotatAll · 02/01/2015 16:28

How someone hasn't punched by now I'll never know.

ithoughtofitfirst · 02/01/2015 16:30

ujjay can I ask what medication you were on please? Or is it too personal. No worries if it is.

gobbynorthernbird · 02/01/2015 16:37

she spent no money losing the weight, just went running

But she obviously had childcare, money for a pair of running shoes, time, lived somewhere it was safe to go running,no health problems preventing her from running, and the money/time/knowledge for a healthy diet, etc.

Ujjayi · 02/01/2015 16:39

ithoughtofitfirst - yep, no probs: it was Pregabalin which is an epilepsy medication. I'm not epileptic but it was prescribed for the neurological condition I had.

Shockers · 02/01/2015 16:44

I hope she is taken to task about her admission that she would not employ a fat person.

fascicle · 02/01/2015 16:46

ppeatfruit
I heard that interview, she spent no money losing the weight, just went running that was because she wanted to prove it could be done.

I don't think she's very pleasant but she has a point.

What point? That somebody who exercises regularly had no problem exercising after a short, self induced hiatus?

aermingers · 02/01/2015 16:48

Actually I think the tweet about 'Ebola bombs' (although distasteful), the subsequent call for her arrest and the 'hate crime' phonecall have highlighted a more important issue.

People might not like what Hopkins has to say but she has a right to say it. What's that quote 'I disapprove of what you say but I will fight to the death to defend your right to say it'.

Really, we are getting into a situation where freedom of speech is severely threatened. It's worrying, and although this woman says silly and offensive things the response to them is far more worrying that than the things she says IMO.

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2015 16:48

gobby Come on now, let's not be naive, there are plenty of normal people who are obese because they eat mainly junk food and don't care basically.

Though I will say that the manufacturers of high sugar and high salt food are clever because those things are quite addictive.

Butl those reasons you give don't apply to the majority. I always find it odd when people say it's too expensive to eat vegetables how much does a bag of carrots cost?

JegHarMalingiMitHar · 02/01/2015 16:48

I think she's clever to think of this. I've been between 57-62 kilos, constantly watching my weight or relaxing a bit. This has gone on for twenty years.

Katie H is being paid to do what I'm been doing to myself all these years. Nice work I guess. Well, not the work, but nice to be paid for what most of us are doing anyway.

RonaldMcDonald · 02/01/2015 16:51

She is unwell IMO
I'm sure she would be appalled by the things she says if she could hear them

Food is such a complicated area for people and putting people down for how they look or what they eat reinforces negative views they already hold about themselves
Help and support and patience is required for fixing dietary troubles
Not hectoring from a hard faced cow

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2015 16:52

fasicle She put on 4 stone and found it difficult to start running it off, she actually did say she sympathised with people who also find it hard. Grin

ithoughtofitfirst · 02/01/2015 16:54

Oh no ujjayi hope you're better now.

I took an anti psychotic that made me put on loads of weight when I was normally very slim. People were so helpful too with their comments Grin

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2015 16:55

One thing she did say was that it seems perfectly ok to have a go at "skinny'' people, which is true IME

gobbynorthernbird · 02/01/2015 16:58

ppeat, but you only need one of those issues to prevent you from running.

Littlehomebird · 02/01/2015 16:59

By discussing Katie Hopkins we are doing exactly what she wants. She is a no body who is desperately trying to cling on to whatever little fame she once had & the only way she knows how to do this is to be controversial. She is to be pitied more than anything.

Bumply · 02/01/2015 16:59

I don't happen to have issues with alcohol. I enjoy a glass or two from time to time and will indulge over Christmas etc.

So if I took to drinking a bottle a day for a set period and then gave it all up and reverted to my near teetotal state and declared that giving up alcohol was easy what would that prove? That I don't have a problem with alcohol.

I do have an issue with my weight. I am currently trying to exercise more than I eat to a sufficient level that my weight reduces gradually to what it used to be decades ago. I'm not finding it easy at all. I go running which burns calories but gives me a hearty appetite that I find it hard not to indulge in. It's not easy.

Samcro · 02/01/2015 17:02

YABU to even listen to anything that vile creature says

Ujjayi · 02/01/2015 17:05

The concept of a "thin person mindset" is just nonsense IMO. What does it actually mean?

And yes completely agree that healthy eating need not be expensive. Nor does it take an excessive amount of time to research. If you have time to be onN, for example, then you have the time to research healthy eating. It is about priorities.

Exercising when you are fat is uncomfortable in every way imaginable. I was shocked the first time I exercised in my fat state at how much extra pressure it puts on your lungs & joints. Not to mention the embarrassment factor of being fat & wearing exercise gear. But getting through that discomfort is essential if you are going to get fit & healthy. So many times I ran or walked in tears. But it was worth it because I owe it to myself & my family to be healthy.

ppeatfruit · 02/01/2015 17:06

Bumply For easy weight loss look at Paul Mckenna it's brilliant because it re educates your whole attitude to food and you can eat anything !! Honest I lost 3 stone on it.

With the internet there aren't very many excuses left IMO.!!

velmadinkly · 02/01/2015 17:07

She is vile woman who states a 'fact' that the majority of people would geberalky agree to, but then takes it one step further so that it causes an outcry. She parades herself and makes money from her persona as the 'pantomime villian'.

What she says about overweight people, in alot of cases is probably correct, but as many people have already said, she isn't somebody who has a weight issue or issues with food. Likewise she isn't somebody who has a small food budget who has to provide meals for her children and family so that they dont go to bed hungry, that doesn't cost the earth in ingredients, food waste or fuel to cook the damn thing, which normally means convenience foods such as chicken nuggets and chips (as an example, I'm not saying this is the food of the devil).

Likewise, she doesn't suffer from any debilitating physical or mental illness as far as we know and if she does, she has enough money to get help and support to overcome the problem, or at least alleviate the problem. As such these problems in general society can be the difference between being motivated to stand and cook, shop for food etc.

Basically, in principle what she says is correct, but in a very black and white view, without understanding all the variables that the general population have to consider or even overcome.

She makes her money off the back of knowingly selling herself as the person to throw a verbal bomb into the proceedings then runs away and rubs her hands from the periferal crowd and if anybody picks her up on it she just says, 'I'm only telling the truth and you don't like the truth'.

That should read "if you have time to be on MN"

ithoughtofitfirst - antipsychotics are some of the worst offendors for weight gain so you have my empathy. But yes the wholly unhelpful "just eat less" comments are laughable when you have just explained to someone that the medication you are taking has virtually stopped your metabolism & you are literally gaining pounds in a day but eating like a bird!

Coumarin · 02/01/2015 17:13

She'll be reading this thread now and rubbing her hands with glee.

I'd lay money on her googling herself and trawling forums everyday looking for any reaction or attention given to her obvious trolling.

I'm 99% certain she's MN member, or at least a regular lurker.
