If you have not made a resolution, may I respectfully suggest that you totter down to the blood bank just ONCE in 2015 and help save someone's life?
It doesn't hurt, they give you biscuits and they have lovely swingy chairs that turn you upside down if you go a bit woozy.
Plus you come out walking about 2feet off the ground because you have done something AMAZING

This is in honour of Joe Trazzletoes who is an inspiration to us all.

Bloody happy new year to you all Thanks

I am not allowed to donate as received blood during my last labour , but a MASSIVE thank you to all those that do , and who turned me from see through back to pink again Flowers

LIttleMcF · 02/01/2015 18:56

This thread got me thinking...I can't donate blood but was prompted to donate SOMETHING so thought of breast milk as I'm still feeding DD2. However, I've just read that recipients of blood transfusions can't donate breast milk either?

FryOneFatManic · 02/01/2015 19:10

I made my 50th donation in December, am booked to go again in April.

DD is 14 and DS is nearly 11 and I'm working on them to follow suit. Grin

DP can't any longer due to medication. Dad's diabetic, and mum managed 10 donations until her medical issues arose.

Mind you, it due to the increased reliability in testing that mum was able to donate in the first place.

She'd had jaundice twice and way back then had been told she'd never be able to donate. When I started I mentioned this to the nurse who told me about a new blood test. Mum came along like a shot, was tested and clear, and donated.

MamaPizza · 02/01/2015 19:28

DH has donated over 50 times and is on gold and I'm finally on silver (couldn't for a while due to hospital investigations, pregnancy etc..).

We love doing it, it's like a day out as a family. We always go together, know the crew - likewise they know us - and always have a fab chat while we do something amazing. We are happy we can help and as long as good health allows us we will continue to do so.

My last donation was 23rd December, it felt so good knowing I could do something like this just before Christmas.

FryOneFatManic · 02/01/2015 21:25

And another bump for good luck.

The stats I saw recently suggest that numbers of donors are dropping in the youngest age group.

We all need for this to be reversed. Once the older donors have to stop, we need to be sure younger donors are joining in or our blood stocks could be in trouble,

I don't know if there are any PR teams that go into secondary schools to highlight blood donation. If not, it might be a good thing to try, to dispel any myths, etc.

Juno321 · 02/01/2015 21:31

I would love to donate since a very small percentage of the population have my blood type! 4% I think?! But Im always anaemic so they won't have me!!

IrenetheQuaint · 02/01/2015 21:57

I have donated a few times, but I am always borderline on the fingerprick test and even when I am allowed to donate I feel like shit for 24 hours afterwards. Any tips for successful donating? Would they take a smaller amount of blood from me if I asked?

Leela5 · 02/01/2015 22:01

They never let me door and apparently I've got one more chance. I'm now upduffed so not allowed but I found out I'm o rhesus negative so really they want my blood! I'll get donating after baby

Have been travelling all day so am delighted to be back and to discover that lovely MNHQ have made the thread a discussion of the day.

Am feeling a bit emotional, partly due to all the wonderful people who are saying that you have been inspired to donate as a result of the thread, but hugely by all the stories of people who have received transfusions and are here on MN and on the planet because somebody gave up their blood in exchange for a biscuit.

It is bloody brilliant, isn't it?

Even if you can't donate, talking about it to others raises awareness, and maybe you'll reach someone who can but who never really thought about it before.

BlueBrightBlue · 02/01/2015 22:37

Twice had blood transfusions pre 1066, so no longer able to.
Always used to annually for the cup of tea and rich tea biscuits.

mandy214 · 02/01/2015 23:00

These are my twins, born more than 12 weeks early. They both needed blood transfusions. You just take it for granted that the blood will be there when you need it.

9 months after they were born, my husband was diagnosed with cancer and had transfusions as part of his treatment.

They are all well and thriving now, but I would not have my family if it weren't for the generosity of people who give blood.

I was taken to donate on my 18th birthday by my dad - a firm believer in blood donation. I've been giving ever since, and am now part of a study for the Blood Transfusion Service where I donate every 12 weeks.

If you have children, a family, please spare the time to donate. Thank you to everyone who has said they will make the effort to go (or nag their nearest and dearest to go Smile) in 2015.

NatalieHarding21 · 02/01/2015 23:11

Thank you Mandy for sharing your experience, really amazing to hear that you donate and that you have also received blood donations for your family, i so hope life is going smoother for you now, really inspiring to hear from you,

Honeydragon · 02/01/2015 23:11

Mandy, thanks for that post Smile

Once you're in the habit of donating regularly you just do it. It's nice to be reminded as to why it's so very important Thanks

SoonMeansNever · 02/01/2015 23:36

I'm booked in for the 15th of Jan, booked it waaaaay back in November and that was the soonest I could get an appt in my town! Gah. We're not exactly remote, can get to the M25 in 20 mins. Hmm

I've been out of the donation loop for a few years due to pregnancies and the dire lack of session availability locally, but hopefully I'll be able to donate regularly again now. Still have to find someone to come with me to watch the DC while I donate tho, last time I tried to do it solo and it did not go well! Blush

My next appointments on the 15th too Grin

TheOldestCat · 03/01/2015 00:14

My next appointment is coming up - it will be my fifth one. I'd meant to for years as two of my SILs had transfusions, but I was pregnant or BF or just plain scared (am phobic about having my blood pressure taken and have low blood pressure so faint easily).

A thread about Super Joe made me just go for it. So glad I did. It's the best feeling.

Must nag DH to start donating again....

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 03/01/2015 00:25

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to (possible blood transfusion as a baby, need to get into my records). If I can, I'm hoping the blood people will have access to those scanners that help locate veins in the near future. I have HMS and my veins can be hard to find, but once you get it in my good vein, it's a good one!
