I don't know about the licence terms etc.

The Maltese Justice minister has made supportive comments about second chances.

But the Maltese PM has tweeted that such an appointment would reflect on the club and to some extent Malta itself, and has urged the club to think carefully before proceeding.

AuntieStella · 03/01/2015 12:16

Prime Ministerial tweet:

"Footballers are role models. Hibs decision will define them + to an extent #Malta. I hope mgmt understand this clearly before final decision"

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/01/2015 16:51

Its apparently made up (according to his spokesman)
bbc news

Although the DM are reporting that the MoJ wouldn't let him go as he is out on licence and "effectively barred from working aboard"

here DM link

I wonder how many of these stories are to test public opinion.

TheOfficialPan · 03/01/2015 17:03

It does work like that BBJ. He can't travel abroad until he has finished his sentence, except in exceptional circumstances, and this isn't one of them.

BoneyBackJefferson · 03/01/2015 17:51

Pan

that is good to know.

SuburbanRhonda · 03/01/2015 22:18

BBC News tonight said the MoJ has blocked him going to Malta.

TheOfficialPan · 03/01/2015 22:41

and his release licence ends Oct 2016. So he is a bit stuck.

TheOfficialPan · 03/01/2015 22:47

No Pan, he got a 5 year sentence, so his licence ends April 2017.

AuntieStella · 03/01/2015 22:51

I've just seen a report that he's talking terms with a League One (presumably old Div 3) club, but not known who.

Or is this just more kite flying to mark the opening of the transfer season?

clam · 03/01/2015 23:12

I think the most depressing thing about this report are the comments at the bottom of the DM article. Blush to admit I read them! It's very depressing to see the number of people who have no understanding of British law. Loads of people are posting that it's the baying public that have led to this ruling, completely missing the fact that it's the law.

And if I read one more time that "he's served his time," when he's actually only on licence, I shall scream. Angry

clam · 04/01/2015 10:54

Just seen this

Interesting that the guy says the un-named club who's considering signing him shortly should not be "inviting public debate" on it.

TheOfficialPan · 04/01/2015 11:52

I think Graeme Taylor there, the footie players union head is already anticipating equivocation from the club - otherwise he wouldn't have said anything at all, 24 hrs ahead of any press conference.

TheOfficialPan · 04/01/2015 11:53

or it could even have been Gordon Taylor....Graeme is a former manager and now radio pundit.

TheOfficialPan · 04/01/2015 12:23

So it's Oldham Athletic.

ihavenonameonhere · 04/01/2015 12:51

I'm going out for lunch now but when I get back I will find a list of their sponsors and email addresses and phone numbers.

I recommend anyone who wants to stop this contact them as only money talks

Storytown · 04/01/2015 12:54

Sports Direct

RoastitBubblyJocks · 04/01/2015 13:12

Can't believe this, really disappointed.

Fucking disgusting.

RandomNPC · 04/01/2015 13:26

He's an unrepentant wanker. I really don't know what his dopey GF is playing at either, standing by him and being an apologist for him too.

Nancy66 · 04/01/2015 14:12

Can I ask: If Ched Evans had accepted his guilt and shown remorse would people be ok with him being given a second chance by football clubs?

Libitina · 04/01/2015 14:23

Shame on Oldham athletic if this turns out to be true. Signing an unrepentant, convicted rapist who is still out of prison on licence. I hope their fans make their feelings known.

TheOfficialPan · 04/01/2015 14:24

Very probably Nancy. The talk of 'served his time/rehabilitation' is irrelevant for obv reasons, but he has cooked his goose as he has rejected rehabilitation regarding his conviction.
Any shift in attitude now would be widely seen as a career tactic rather than anything else, such as 'remorse'.

BoneyBackJefferson · 04/01/2015 14:31

Nancy

The very first thing that he should have done was call his dogs to heel.

They have been hounding this girl in his name.

Nancy66 · 04/01/2015 14:34

Yes, I agree he's behaved despicably and seems to have gone all 'OJ' in that he now absolutely believes his own innocence.

ConferencePear · 04/01/2015 14:42

Oldham Athletic has sponsors ............

AuntieStella · 04/01/2015 14:46

According to the Manchester Evening News the fans don't like this one bit.
