to not put DS into fresh pajamas every night?

I'm trying to cut down on the amount of washing we do. WIBU to put him in worn pajamas? He has a bath every night and gets changed out of them first thing to go to school, then they just get tossed in the hamper to be washed.

Seems to me he could get more wear out of them but DH thinks I'm being a skanky skank. Am I?

Worst mum in the world award goes to me!!! Change them once a week after their weekly bath - unless the dirty them obviously or unless they are extremely sweaty in the night. Myself and dh also a week but we wash more than once a week

Pud2 · 13/12/2014 22:09

Clean pjs every night is so unnecessary. As if a young child is going to notice or care whether they are in fresh pjs every night! I'm sure we wore the same pjs every night for ages when we were children and it didn't do me any harm!

Mehitabel6 · 13/12/2014 22:12

Whatever do you do if you go on holiday for a week-pack 7 pairs of pyjamas?!

Mehitabel6 · 13/12/2014 22:14

Once a week is fine for a child.
I remember another thread where people washed their jeans after one wearing!! Completely unnecessary.

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights · 13/12/2014 22:34

Jeans and cardigans are the only things I don't wash after a single wear. Pj's definitely if I wear them ,which is rare.

Mehitabel6 · 14/12/2014 07:59

I am intrigued by how you cope if you go camping for a week with 3 children- do you take 21pairs of pyjamas or do you spend a lot of your holiday in the laundrette?

Lweji · 14/12/2014 08:13

I got curious about something, don't people wear trousers other than jeans?
Because I don't wash any trousers after their first wear, not just jeans. Nor skirts.
Nor do I wash most tops if I wore something else with sleeves under them, and there are no stains. Particularly woolen and knitted tops.

Mehitabel6 · 14/12/2014 08:23

I can't say ,Lweji, I don't do this excessive washing.

I hardly ever wash skirts....

Pjs can go a week.

NickiFury · 14/12/2014 09:27

It's not a nightmare, it's one load a day, usually dried on a rack in the bathroom or occasionally tumble dried.

We wear clean clothes and PJ's every day and always will. Wear your grubby week old PJ's and feel happy to do so, I will wear my clean lovely ones and feel happy to do so and not give anyone else's choice a second thought just as I didn't until I saw all the outrage regarding daily washed PJS on this thread Smile.

NickiFury · 14/12/2014 09:30

Oh and when I go on holiday I only take three to four days worth of clothing and wash every four days, so only once on a weekly holiday. It means my suit cases are pretty light too.

gamerchick · 14/12/2014 09:35

I don't wear jeans or skirts but the bottoms I do wear get washed after every use.

I don't wear jumpers either so it's all good Grin

And yes on holiday I take clean sleepwear for each night. It's not as if it takes much room up.

pigwitch · 14/12/2014 09:41

Why do children wear pants to bed? Surely their bits need to breathe?
I don't wear them as find them so uncomfortable to sleep in.
We wear pajamas for 2 nights in our house and then wash.

Lweji · 14/12/2014 09:47

Children and adults wear pants to bed to prevent soiling of other clothes. It's easier to wash and dry pants that you wore or will wear during the day anyway than extra pj bottoms every night.
Pants don't need to be uncomfortable, we just need to buy the right size.
And the bits don't "need" to breath. They don't "breath" for 2-3 years in nappies and they don't "breath" much in pj pants either.
And do read the bit about washing things in a quick 30ºC wash.

Lweji · 14/12/2014 09:48

one load a day

MellowAutumn · 14/12/2014 09:48

No wonder we are facing water shortages and a huge increase in allergy's- the ecology is going down the plug hole of some of you ! why on earth would you wash pj's every night - do you also wash the bedding every night ?

MellowAutumn · 14/12/2014 09:51

''soiling of other clothes'' - pants under pyjamas ???? oh god help us - these are pre pubescent children already being taught they are essentially 'dirty'and their bits are dirty.

mausmaus · 14/12/2014 10:03

well, looking at dc's knickers after each day and the skidmarks...

GobblersKnob · 14/12/2014 10:12

Fascinating priorities shown by those who would dream of letting their child sleep in pjs sullied by just one nights wear, but couldn't give a shiny shit about the world they will inherit.

Theorientcalf · 14/12/2014 10:28

One of the theories of why allergies are so prevalent is because we're so obsessed with cleaning. It's got a name, can't remember it.

I just can't get my head around how 'dirty' a pair of jeans or pyjamas must be after one use (soiled clothes the exception obviously). It's obsessive and unnecessary.

MellowAutumn · 14/12/2014 10:38

if your kids constantly have skid marks in their pants then they either have a medical condition you need to get addressed or you need to teach them to wipe their bums properly! there is a lot of evidence that 'over cleanliness' has contributed to the rise in allergies, asthma and other autoimmune issues. baths every day strip the skin of its natural oils and the beneficial bacteria that have a happy slightly acid balance until you use alkaline soap and upset alot of your skins natural defence mechanism

spamanderson · 14/12/2014 10:51

I do on average maybe 2 loads a day, at the most, but my dd's wear their pyjamas once before washing, towels get washed after 1 use. Dds wear whole new school uniform everyday (fresh shirt, cardigan/jumper and fresh dress or trousers) hubby will wear his work trousers for a couple of days, obviously a fresh shirt everyday. I will wear jeans a few times but I only wear them to leave the house (normally just the 10 minutes school run as I work from home) and then change into my slobby clothes Ie jogging bottoms etc. when we holiday I do indeed take 7 or 8 pairs of pjs for each child for a weeks holiday, maybe 10-14 pairs of pants each per week. Maybe 10 outfits just in case they get dirty/wet/we decide to go somewhere they need to dress up.
My dds have no skin conditions, allergies etc, they don't bath every day but they are kept clean, my house is certainly not spotless but laundry is my biggest chore, I love the dcs to smell of washing powder, fresh pjs, fresh clothes etc is just the loveliest smell!

CheckpointCharlie · 14/12/2014 10:55

I must officially be the skankiest MNetter.

Wash sheets when we can be arsed, probably less than monthly.
Towels when they smell.
Ditto PJs and if I can wear the same clothes for a few days I will.

Honestly, life is too short and we always smell nice and clean!

I always feel better when I read comments where posters say ' I don't wash my sheets every day....' Until I get to the bit where they say 'once a week is fine' and I think, oh, just me that's skanky then.... Grin

dementedma · 14/12/2014 10:55

Love a good MN laundry thread. There are five of us so clean PJs every night would be...umm..35 pairs to launder every week? Think I would rather have a life. Ours get washed whenever it occurs to me, which isn't that often. Even when all three Dcs were at home I never did a load of laundry a day - small flat,no tumble drier, work full time, can't be arsed. Down to about two loads a week now though that will change when they come home for Christmas!
