to ask if there are black people in hull?

Im black and considering moving my family to hull due to housing shortages in my area.
Just wanted to know if it is common to see black people in hull as I do not want my family to be ostracised.

I was bullied extensively in high school due to the colour of my skin everyday for 5 years. Absolutley ruined me as a person.

I left school 6 years ago and to this day am still suffering the affects of the daily abuse I received all those years ago and would not want that for my children, hence my reason asking this question.

Quite a lot of Congolese refugees, as Hull City Council accepted a group of them several years ago. Not sure about other ethnic groups.

Just googled the wiki page hull is 1.45% black so not that high. It's not multicutural because it's 92% white.

Where do you live now op? What about jobs? I know hull has not got the greatest employment rates.

There are black people, though not many - being at the end of the train line meant we missed out on various waves of immigrants. Plenty of Asian (as in Far East) students, lots of Eastern Europeans, but still very white.

It's also weirdly not racist (by skin colour, at least). We're all so unused to seeing anyone who isn't white that the natural instinct to look is still there and has to be consciously squashed. I've heard of black people locally who are amazed at the lack of racism here compared to other, larger cities. So go for it!

I rather suspect that would have been the fault of the school and not the population at large. I went to endless nearly all white schools in various locations and never had a problem.

I live in Hull. In my childs school (700 kids) there are 4 black families I can think of. Around quarter children in each class is of mixed nationality. Loads of different nationalities especially Chinese and Eastern European as well. I live west and there is a large polish community. I am not saying no racist folk here but I have never witnessed or heard anyone at school or out expressing it. Sorry rushed post hope makes sense and helps. Basically don't let it stop you I love it here.

Better employment in york ? Not many black people in hull but as far as I know my friends who are haven't had racist abuse. Maybe one incident but that was more drug related.

I probably wouldn't recommend a move there unless you can find a job first. Not great for employment

Currently living in South London (Croydon) and have been in temporary accommodation for almost 2 years (1 bed flat, 2 toddlers) as we had to leave our old flat due to relationship break up.

It's my only option due to the housing shortages and cannot afford to private rent in London or anywhere remotely close on my wages.

Sheffield has a very multicultural mix maybr easier to find a job too.

Schools are not great in Hull. Only 46% of students got 5 AtoC's at GCSE including maths and English, which is quite a lot lower than Croydon. Wages are lower, unemployment relatively high. Waiting lists for council properties are long. There might be more private rented accommodation. House prices are lower but are rising.
I have family in Hull and I rather like it, but would advise you to take everything into account especially job opportunities.

If you'll be privately renting, OP, it is cheap as chips here - on benefits you'd get £86 a week and that'd get you a perfectly reasonable two bed house. Lack of jobs is an issue (though plenty of jobs available if you like telesales).

I was brought up in Holderness (the villages between Hedon and Withernsea just outside of Hull). There were 300 people in my school year (in the 90s) and there was one black girl. She was bullied.

Come to Norfolk! Very few black people, but those who are get the most lovely, friendly reception. No racism here. And the region is beautiful. Good schools too. Employment - depends on the sort you want, but East Anglia is developing fast.

Kings Lynn must have changed a bit since I was there last, then. Racism was alive and well there in the 80s. There used to be gang fights in Station Road, too.

What?!! Norfolk racist?!! My black dh has had nothing but delightful and friendly interaction all these years, from everyone he's met here! I'm wondering what parts of Norfolk you others are talking about. We live in the Dereham area in a small village, but we often go into Norwich, Wroxham, Sprowston Sheringham and Fakenham and have never ever met with any unpleasantness. On the Park and Ride, all the drivers know my dh and greet him like an old friend. He's played for his football team all over the place and felt perfectly at home among the other teams in the changing rooms. Also at gyms etc. He works as a school cleaner and all the staff (teachers and ancillary) love him and are his good friends. However can you say Norfolk is racist???? Wow! He'll explode when I tell him this!!!

Kings Lynn and most of the NN coast was fine. Norwich was fine too. I only had a problem in Kings Lynn. And, with one boy in a village near Holt. But, I think that was the boy and not the village.

More than there were 15 years ago, but still not a large percentage. Racism isn't a massive problem though.

Norfolk is rascist. A week doesn't go by where people dont moan about golliwogs being banned. And I often see them on sale at the local car boots. Someone called me a golliwog.
