To think Victoria Secret Angels are just ordinary women?

Obviously they are beautiful and have amazing figures but they are still ordinary women. They get their body through hard work and eating well.

I was reading some comments on the DM with people saying -

I could never have a body like that as I don't have the time to work out.

These girls obviously starve themselves

That they are lucky to look like that.

We all have the same choices, just like them. They work, they have children, but they make better food choices and have the dedication to work out.

Aibu to think these are ordinary women and the hate comments are most likely down to jealousy?

They really are not ordinary women. They have a very specific body shape to begin with. A rare one, or it wouldn't command the premium that it does.
I think it's actually quite damaging to suggest that anyon can look likeep that if they just worked at it.

NoImSpartacus · 03/12/2014 18:20

When I went to NYC a few years ago, before VS had a shop here (presume they do now anyway) and I was quite excited to go to the VS shop only to be confronted by a pile of utter shite, flammable knickers that looked like they were from Romford market and naff padded bras that La Senza would be proud of. VS sells cheap tat but the multi million dollar marketing belies this.

RoseCavallari · 03/12/2014 18:27

I haven't said that Back. I'm just saying people shouldn't give out a message that these women starve themselves and have never seen a gym in their life. That they are goddesses that sit around all day eating whatever the hell they like.

All I'm saying is that these women do work out really hard and do eat well and thats how they achieve and maintain that figure.

Of course not everyone can look like they do, I've never said such a stupid statement. I'm saying it takes time and dedication and people dismiss that by saying they are not just ordinary people.

There's obviously nothing wrong with promoting healthy eating habits and regular exercise.

But that ain't gonna make the average woman look like a VS model, so it's silly to pretend otherwise. That specific look of being manly very tall with well defined muscle tone is not something that most women's bodies are physically programmed to do. We naturally have a much higher body fat percentage than men, and rounder hips and thighs.

They look great on the catwalk, but it's not a look I'd want for meself even if I could get it. I like being petite and having tits that don't disappear when I take my bra off.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 18:33

Rose, the person who accused you of marketing for VS/Instagram or whatever was being daft.
There are some people who come on AIBU and can be quite insulting.
You either need to get more thick skinned or head off to Netmums or another more tightly moderated forum.
Glad you have returned to the thread but remember when someone insults you just think rain in the shower.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 18:34

I've known women (well young women) who looked "like that" but they didn't spend their time striking odd poses with their equally good looking friends on, what is that, a carousel?

If it's about women to admire, how about some who may or may not be very good-looking and svelte, and do other really interesting jobs? I am interested in science and it'd be great to see some threads started about how super various female astrophysicists are!

Woah ... this thread is genuinely eye opening, the amount of negative comments on here aimed at these women is scary.

We moan about the media and men but my god we do a good enough job of ripping each others figures and body shapes to pieces.

Could you imagine if it was a plus size runway show and people came on here and slagged the women off saying they were fat, lazy, glad they didnt have thighs that rubbed together, or bellies that jiggled.

Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock who is on Newsnight a lot and now presents the sky at night as well is someone I admire, for example.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 18:39

Erm who has made negative comments about them Confused

If you can find me more than 5 I will forego my cake this evening just for you Smile

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 18:42

I did say more than 5!

JohnFarleysRuskin · 03/12/2014 18:47

Really op?

First you say everyone can look like a vs model then you say everyone's slagging them off?

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say.

They have rare figures. They work hard at them too. I don't see why they are held up as amazing or anything but that's the world we live in right now.

FreudiansSlipper · 03/12/2014 18:47

I know a few women mostly young who do have figures like they do, do not have to worry about what they eat and do not exercise and one was a model she is lazy but when she worked in paris she had to starve herself and fainted a few times I think she ended up a size 4 she looked awful

but I am sure some of them do work hard that is their job but you have to have a certain look about you, right height and right build no amount of hard work is going to make a model our of someone who is short or a large build

I am not sure we should be promoting top models as role models for young girls this work can only be done by very few women and it is based on how you look not your hard work

and really should we not be seeing women as more than something good to look at

JohnFarleysRuskin · 03/12/2014 18:48

Can you point out the negative comments please.

Can you quote where I said - everyone can look like a VS model.

Because I don't remember saying it.

I'm saying that whilst yes genetics play a part, they still have to work damn hard and watch what they eat - they are human.

They still live real lives. They are not real angels and we are all mortals.

OP posts:
NotSayingImBatman · 03/12/2014 18:51

I don't think I'm daft, Ral. This is the second similar thread the OP has started and there are people out there that make a living from dropping these kind of threads into popular for ums to generate publicity.

Marketing sexy underwear to a forum of mostly women, wouldn't be the stupidest idea from a PR point of view.

Anyway, the OP vehemently denies that. Apparently she just has a bit of a girl crush, which is fine too!

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/12/2014 18:51

They're not average looking, no. That is why they do the job they do.

RonaldMcDonald · 03/12/2014 18:51

Being 5'10+ and a size 8 max does entail just a bit of effort
no matter what they say about chowing down on burgers and doing no exercise
To an extent they are also lucky...the vast majority of us will never be that height or that symmetrical..so without that all the work in the world will just make you tall and slim
They do work their arses off and it takes huge will power work and dedication. I respect them as much as any other woman

RoseCavallari · 03/12/2014 18:52

It's not negative commentary about their bodies. They work hard on their bodies and keep them in good shape and let's celebrate everyone's different shape.

Really? If I said you're figure is manly and when you take your bra off you'd have no tits, you wouldn't see that as negative?

OP posts:
JohnFarleysRuskin · 03/12/2014 18:54

Er, in your op you say the models are just ordinary woman who eat well and work out. The logical conclusion of that is ordinary woman who eat well and work out can be a vs model.

JohnFarleysRuskin · 03/12/2014 18:55

Blimey rose... I'm not really sure what your beef is!

CoolStoryBro · 03/12/2014 18:55

Isn't the target market for VS women aged between 18 and 24? Most 18 to 24 year olds have great figures as they're young!

I couldn't care less what VSAngel's look like as I'm not their target audience. I like better quality undies that are actually going to support my 40 year old boobs!

Mintyy · 03/12/2014 18:56

Occasionally I read a thread on Mumsnet and, despite careful reading of the op and all updates, I completely and utterly fail to grasp whatever it is op is trying to say.

This is one of them Grin.
