To think Victoria Secret Angels are just ordinary women?

RoseCavallari · 03/12/2014 12:33

Obviously they are beautiful and have amazing figures but they are still ordinary women. They get their body through hard work and eating well.

I was reading some comments on the DM with people saying -

I could never have a body like that as I don't have the time to work out.

These girls obviously starve themselves

That they are lucky to look like that.

We all have the same choices, just like them. They work, they have children, but they make better food choices and have the dedication to work out.

Aibu to think these are ordinary women and the hate comments are most likely down to jealousy?

Can't link, Rose , I'm on my tablet. But it was yesterday's edition.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 13:11

Now laughing at the idea of striking poses like the women in the OP in my place of work Grin

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 13:12

Oh I forgot the booze! YY all all all the booze. And the cheese, and the fags, and the drugs happy days Smile

Tanaqui · 03/12/2014 13:14

I do think it is good that they talk about working out, and don't pretend "oh I eat what I like and running around after the children keeps me fit" like a lot of celebs seen to. However you would need that ectomorphic body type to start with!

Discopanda · 03/12/2014 13:16

You may not be built to look like a VS Angel but you can be the best version of yourself.

ButternutSquish · 03/12/2014 13:16

I go to work for 8 hours then go to the gym 3 times a week doing a mix of cardio and weights. I watch what I eat 90% of the time. Don't smoke, drink little but I don't look like any of these women.

I have lipo-lympedema, a little understood and non-curable genetic fat disorder. I have muscle, good strong muscle but it's hidden under my fat. And I'm only 5ft 5.

I work but I could NEVER be one of those women. I'm not saying it's unfair, it's just life. But it's not achievable for all of us. A six pack is not genetically possible for everyone...that's just the way it is. Thinking that it's just about making positive choices is unrealistic. Eat healthy, exercise and deal with the hand you've been given

Latara · 03/12/2014 13:16

I think that they do work hard to maintain their figures with lots of exercise & healthy eating.

However even the gym bunnies at my gym, while pretty & toned, don't look like that because mostly they are not that tall.

I think the Angels, like most models, are lucky to be very tall with good model-like bone structures, & have the kind of faces that are photogenic.

angelos02 · 03/12/2014 13:21

As the average height of a woman is 5ft 4, while these models are around 6ft, no amount of exercise and healthy diet is going to make most women look like the VS models. I agree with previous poster that it is good that it has been shown how much effort goes into looking the way models do. Looking at their diet they seem to have pretty much zero carbs and little alcohol.

SevenZarkSeven · 03/12/2014 13:38

I've not read the article but reading the comments on here, you guys know that articles like this don't always tell the truth, right? It sounds like this company like to make minor slebs of their models and use them as part of their "brand" and so there will be a certain image they want them to project which reading the posts on here looks like "hard-working and wholesome".

I mean maybe it is all true, but clearly if one of these women kept her trim figure through careful use of nicotine and cocaine, they wouldn't exactly be shouting about it!

MabelSideswipe · 03/12/2014 13:48

To be fair they couldn't do my job (which I enjoy) either. And I get to get cake and sit on my arse more....so result!

RoseCavallari · 03/12/2014 13:59

They are not 6ft Confused where did you get that from?

Miranda Kerr 5ft 8"
Cara 5ft 9"
Elsa Hosk 5ft 9"

So yes they might be tall but they aren't 6ft.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 14:14

I could look a damn sight better than what I do if I put some effort in and stopped eating junk.

Genetics does come into it a bit though. Some people are lucky when it comes to height and bone structure.

They are absolutely stunning looking woman.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 14:15

I am 6 foot! I was lucky there and could look very attractive if I put down the junk food and bothered to get a decent hair cut. Just cannot be arsed.

Pandora37 · 03/12/2014 14:16

They make better food choices and have the dedication to work out because if they didn't they'd be out of a job. I think it's as simple as that really. If I was told I had to parade around in my underwear and the pictures would be plastered all over the internet then I probably would be more motivated to have a proper exercise regime. Good on them for showing the work they have to put in though. I hate it when you see celebrities who are a size 6 claim they rarely exercise and exist on a diet of pizza and cakes.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 14:20

When I was younger I got scouted for modelling and people even stopped me in the street on numerous occasions asking me if I was a model. But that was 20 years ago and about 6 stone lighter.

I now take medication which causes bad weight gain. When I was on psych ward once they were handing out the same tablet to the anorexics to make them eat more (I was in there for bipolar, not an eating problem).

I could put the effort in but am lacking motivation to sort myself out.

angelos02 · 03/12/2014 14:22

Sorry Rose. I genuinely thought they were taller than that. They aren't that tall really are they. I'm 5ft 9.

MarshaBrady · 03/12/2014 14:26

yabu not ordinary women who work out and eat well.

There are catwalk models who wouldn't even get the gig.

It is incredible how they've built up the whole thing now though and get these top few to do the show.

raltheraffe · 03/12/2014 14:31

Even when I was younger and got scouted for modelling if I had taken it I would have never got a top supermodel job as bone structure was not good enough for the top dollar work.

These women succeed on a combination of winning the genetic lottery and working very very hard to keep their figure. Many top supermodels have also had some cosmetic work done to improve on the features that they have. If you look at young photos of Kate Moss you can see she has had some minor work done on her nose.

fancyanotherfez · 03/12/2014 14:32

Well we don't all have the same choices. Their job involves working out several hours every day. My job is something different, so I have to fit in exercise in my spare time. They would lose their jobs if they stuffed 2 mini Snickers in their gob, as I have just done whereas I wouldn't. I'll never be a model without going on a stretching machine, because I'm not 5'10, so Ill never have that motivation.

MarshaBrady · 03/12/2014 14:33

It really is very small percentage who fit the bill, for catwalk alone. Then VA will select from that.

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 03/12/2014 14:35

There is obviously an element of genetic wizardry at work here with the body types and pleasing facial features but yes, these women do not wake up looking like this and the average person in the street could make changes to their body shape if they exercised as much and ate as strictly as many top end models do. However, that doesn't mean that we would all be transformed into Naomi Campbell if we ate less, moved more and moisturised religiously.

Theoretician · 03/12/2014 14:44

Presumably there is a selection process that chooses these women for their looks. I mean, they don't just get a bunch of women (even from the subset of those who do all the right things and want to model) and award contracts by lottery. So unless you believe there is no genetic component to good looks, then no, not everyone can look like this.

TheYuletideMovement · 03/12/2014 14:49

I could never look like them in a million years! Yes they work at it but they are obviously very good looking and photogenic to start with.

Purpleroxy · 03/12/2014 14:53

They look good because they have good genes, work out a lot and eat well. Agree that as their business depends on their looks, the work that goes into it is a high priority.

Some are very very pretty with striking facial features, they are much taller than average and are probably quite naturally lean. So I thinkthat doesn't make them ordinary really OP.

TsukuruTazaki · 03/12/2014 14:55

Obviously they work out hard and eat well - good on them.

But regardless how much exercise I do and how well I eat I would never have that build as I'm just not made that way. A lot comes down to genetics.

I'm happy enough with my looks but whatever I do I will always be 5 ft 4 with big boobs. Can't change that by diet or exercise.

So actually people who say the VS angels are lucky to look like that are speaking the truth.
