I am not a fan of violent games at the best of times, but apparently now in Grand Theft Auto 5's new upgrade you can have first person sex with a prostitute before shooting her in the head. With real sex noises. You can see a delightful clip here

I think anyone who plays this is sick. But I know that there are kids in my ten year old's class who have this game. Do the parents even know that they can do this???? I cannot believe any parent would be happy letting their kid or teen play this.

What makes you think the game is based around sadistic fantasies?

I wouldn't play it and I'd have a lower opinion of someone who did, but it is for adults and it's not for me to stop them.

It is past time we dealt with anyone giving the game to children though.

teddybears · 22/11/2014 23:54

coyoacan Objecting to games based around sadistic fantasies? What, on earth, are you talking about.
I'm not going to even try to have a discussion on a topic when you, and a lot others on this thread, clearly know nothing about the game other than what you have seen on a 60 second video clip or read on some article.

Coyoacan · 23/11/2014 02:33

Sorry teddybears, I thought the subject of this thread was a game, GTA, that features a prostitute being used and killed, is that not the case?

merrymouse · 23/11/2014 07:29

Sorry altinkum - bit of a sidetrack - I agree they are both more or less the same kind of toy, (mega bloks copying lego) but as far as I know lego doesn't have any themes relating to 18 games.

I have a problem with merchandise for any 18 game being targeted at children.

LoblollyBoy · 23/11/2014 09:50

We are talking about GTA coyo, yes. But you are wrong to suggest that it is based on sadistic fantasies, if your basis for that assertion is that you believe thata the game features a prostitute being used and killed.

teddybears · 23/11/2014 09:59

Coyocan f you played the game you would know what it was about, if you don't play the game then don't worry about it.
Just like I don't worry about movies and books, with much more violence and suspect sex content, I don't like. Lets get upset over these things happening in real life, not make believe worlds.

Which starwars and batman films have a 15 rating?

merrymouse · 23/11/2014 10:32

And you're not really persuading me that the games industry is really standing by its rating system if they are releasing games under the same brand name as 12's and 18's.

It also makes it look as though they are deliberately and lazily upping the shock and gore content of an existing brand to make more money.

Google is your friend. Please find one starwars film with a 15 rating.

To paraphrase Finn in the lego movie, you buy them in a toy store.

To be fair lego do make sets aimed at adults but I don't think the 'big bang' lego set will be on any 8 year old's Christmas list. call of duty mega blocks is clearly bought for children.

Tryharder · 23/11/2014 10:57

YANBU OP.

TBH, I think less of adults who play this sort of sick, violent, nasty crap. I know it's a 'game' but why would you get enjoyment out if raping someone in a game?

If I were dating, it would be a deal breaker if the man played games like this.

I also don't get parents who insist that their DCs want to play it. I have a 10 year old and he has never once asked to play an age inappropriate game. And no, we are not posh or middle class either.

The manufacturer of the games themselves don't rate them, PEGI does in the same way as film classification boards rate films.

49% of games are rated 3+, only 4% are rated over 18 these ratings are based on content not difficulty. Maybe there's something wrong with the classification system. Maybe there needs to be a massive campaign in conjunction with the gaming industry to publicise what the ratings and picture messages mean.

As for the clip, it's not part of the storyline at all, the ability to do it is there, but it's down to the individual playing to do it in the massive open world.

jellybeans · 23/11/2014 11:18

I have GTA5 and it is a good game overall! However my young kids do not play it. I do wish there was no detailed strip scenes and the sound of the rape scene is grim. However you don't have to choose to do these.

merrymouse · 23/11/2014 11:21

For all i know there are Star Wars sex aids.

The original properties on which the lego sets are based are not 15.

To be fair, the games are produced and then rated. The Call of Duty series covers a lime period from WW2 to the near future, and it's been made by numerous developers over the years. It's hardly surprising that they all have different visions and ideas of what a Call of Duty game should be. The massive increase in graphics and animation quality since 2003 when the first came out also make it easier to cross the line into the next age level with the same content.

TBH, I think less of adults who play this sort of sick, violent, nasty crap. I know it's a 'game' but why would you get enjoyment out if raping someone in a game?
GTA, for all its faults, isn't Rape Simulator 2014. Numerous quotes like this in this thread are reason I tell acquaintances that I play video games in real life.

JCDenton · 23/11/2014 14:53

There is the 'No Russian' level to support your second paragraph, though.

JCDenton · 23/11/2014 15:24

To merrymouse, not tryharder

SevenZarkSeven · 23/11/2014 16:17

I find the idea that anything goes in an 18 game as it's not "real life" weak really.

Most people including the censors have a line that they draw. The difference here is that some people think that paying a prostitute for a sex act then shooting her crosses that line and some don't.

kali110 · 23/11/2014 17:01

There maybe more people playing games than some people think, maybe they don't admit it if they think they will be judged for played a game.
Not sure what gta i have but there are prostitutes in it.
I'v killed them. I'v also killed policemen!i do it purely to rob their money.
I'm still somehow a well rounded individual. Grin

in Tesco this morn a kid that looked around 8 years old was with his mum at the stand that sells GTA- the 1st stand you see in the store for all to see-.

she said course he could.

manager was standing nearby and I went over and said woman was buying an 18 cert game for a child, he just gave me a judgy look and shrugged. then I said 'but if she was buying alcohol for him youd do something, no?' and walked away!
