I am not a fan of violent games at the best of times, but apparently now in Grand Theft Auto 5's new upgrade you can have first person sex with a prostitute before shooting her in the head. With real sex noises. You can see a delightful clip here

I think anyone who plays this is sick. But I know that there are kids in my ten year old's class who have this game. Do the parents even know that they can do this???? I cannot believe any parent would be happy letting their kid or teen play this.

Yes, I think 'shades of grey' romanticises abusive relationships and if 'shades of grey' ads were plastered all over my local tesco and Mattel had a line of 'shades of grey' branded dolls and parents routinely gave their 10 year olds a copy of the book I would be more vocal about my concerns.

You can blame parents, but I think games manufacturers are happy to take the cash and hide behind the Pegi system while deliberately raising the profiles of 16 and 18 games among younger children.

Gaming is no longer niche. Games have a higher profile now among children than TV - I am fairly sure that more children of my acquaintance watch stampy than blue peter. When something becomes main stream it concerns all of us.

"Don't watch it if you don't like it" was probably used to defend the black and white minstrel show.

LoblollyBoy · 22/11/2014 09:18

Can you really buy GTA dolls from Matel?

HouseBaelish · 22/11/2014 09:33
  1. The clip isn't from the game as you buy it in store.
  2. I'd like to see the well-documented evidence of gamers being "misogynistic weirdos"
  3. Games are rated. They're obviously rated on the box. Saying "parents don't understand the system" is ludicrous as an "18" should give pretty damn good an indication that it contains adult themes.
  4. GamerGate and the situation with Brianna Wu/Zoe Quinn is appaling. A lot of vilely abusive tweets isn't evidence of anything other than those tweets are dicks. It certainly isn't indicative of the gaming community as a whole
merrymouse · 22/11/2014 10:08

No, but you can buy call of duty megablocks.

puntasticusername · 22/11/2014 11:06

One of my neighbours got this game last Christmas. He was trying to tell me that the fact it's an 18 doesn't mean you need to be 18 to play it, it means it's "a teenage game".

A) that's nonsense and b) YOU'RE STILL NINE. Horrible.

LongDistanceLove · 22/11/2014 11:24

How have they done this merry? I'm genuinely interested in this, as from what I can see there was no direct marketing to children at all for this game, If parents can't take responsibility for the games their children play (I realise friends houses are different) by educating themselves about content then that's their problem, why should an adult game be censored because little jimmies mum can't can't see the issue of giving an 18 game to a nine year old.

JCDenton · 22/11/2014 12:09

The clip isn't from the game as you buy it in store.
The next-gen version comes with a first person view out of the box doesn't it?

merrymouse · 22/11/2014 13:22

Look at amazon reviews for call of duty megablocks - adults may buy these toys, but the reviews are about people buying them for children. Licensing deals like this imply that 18 doesn't really mean 18. If call of duty isn't really 18, are any games really 18?

I am perfectly able to stop my own children from playing 18 games. But apparently other people aren't - and we all have to live with their children - probably not going out and shooting prostitutes, but still absorbing messages that they aren't mature or experienced enough to put into context.

The people who produce these games - and representatives of the gaming industry need to do more to enforce the message that 18 means 18, even if it means less profit.

merrymouse · 22/11/2014 13:30

why should an adult game be censored because little jimmies mum can't can't see the issue of giving an 18 game to a nine year old.

Because if little jimmy grows up and is a complete twat because video games are just the latest toy and nobody discussed or checked the content, it'll be too late to complain to his mum.

I don't think video games by themselves turn people into twats, but it's all part of the background chatter that says certain types of women are fair game.

merrymouse · 22/11/2014 13:35

And my argument is about clarifying the age rating message, not censorship. You might think a label on a box is enough but apparently not.

Waitingonasunnyday · 22/11/2014 13:41

I don't care what rating GTA is - I've told my 9 yo he can have COD when he is 18 but no one of any age will ever play GTA under my roof. Completely vile.

Ir1na · 22/11/2014 16:18

If you're over the age then surely you know INR? Especially for Call Of Duty, people can join the military for real at 16 but aren't allowed to buy a game about it. Hmm

Ir1na · 22/11/2014 16:39

Although I think the C.O.D storyline involving a future world war started between Russia and Europe is far more frightening than any sex or violence!!

FamiliesShareGerms · 22/11/2014 16:44

Do posters really not see the difference between watching a film with sex and violence in it, and playing a first person game where you are the character having sex and inflicting violence?

ArsenicSoup · 22/11/2014 16:52

So creepy. Urgh. No male anal rape? No? Thought not.

Yes, this.

'Parents' who let DC have access to this type of stuff needs to be dealt with via child protection procedures and criminal charges.

ArsenicSoup · 22/11/2014 16:53

(Because of the misogyny as well as the graphic sexual imagery)

MiddletonPink · 22/11/2014 17:24

I think any woman allowing this game in her house where her children or ever she could see the graphic sexual scenes or the violence seriously needs their heads testing.

Not that DH is of that mentality to buy games like this ( or any for that matter ) but if he did I would seriously take a dim view of him.

teddybears · 22/11/2014 18:14

This thread is starting to read like the comments section of a Daily Mail article. Hmm

Ir1na · 22/11/2014 18:32

Ignoring the obvious - INR, why do so many people seem to think Call Of Duty is preferable? Assuming things DID promote whatever ideas are in them, are they saying that joining the military and being involved in major wars would be less bad than prostitution/crime? Shock

BoneyBackJefferson · 22/11/2014 18:50

Is it actually part of the game or a "mod" from an external source?

merrymouse · 22/11/2014 19:53

people can join the military for real at 16

I think it varies depending on the section. However I don't think under 18's should be involved in combat.

So teddybears, you think objecting to games based around sadistic fantasies being played in homes around the world are a healthy influence on society Or maybe that they have no influence at all? An interesting point of view, what do you think does have an influence on the behaviour of people?
