AIBU to be very pleased that Sheffield Utd have recognised that the rapist Ched Evans is toxic

Very good news.

Good to see some sense being shown (finally).

The rapist Ched Evans will not be signed by Sheffield United because of the 'toxic' reaction to their (stupid) plan.

OP posts:
AuntieStella · 15/11/2014 18:28

I hope this is correct.

He's still on licence, so has not yet served his time so I think it's far too early to go into a role with that sort of profile.

I am amazed the club was "shocked" by the strength of reaction though. Are the Blades often that clueless?

PigletJohn · 15/11/2014 18:31

I see that on 18th October, the club was still thinking about it

So, left to themselves, two years was not long enough for them to come to a decision.

A couple of weeks of public scorn and revulsion pushed them into it.

FrontForward · 15/11/2014 18:33

Great news but long overdue

Thumbwitch · 15/11/2014 18:35

www.ibtimes.co.uk/ched-evans-offered-new-football-contract-after-release-prison-rape-1470673 This is more sure that a contract was offered, but only on the basis of what was reported in the Sun (not renowned for its absolute accuracy, I have to admit)

I'm pleased he isn't going to be re-signed but I can't imagine this is the end of it.

And of course he's not going to be penniless, he's going to have to get a normal job like normal people, that's all!

PigletJohn · 15/11/2014 18:41

[[http://www.sufc.co.uk/news/article/20141111-statement-2078346.aspx PUBLISHED 17:50 11th November 2014
Sheffield United Football Club acknowledges the public discussion on the potential return of its former player, Mr Ched Evans, to professional football following the completion of the custodial portion of his sentence for rape in the courts of England and Wales. While some have speculated about whether the Club will or should invite Mr Evans to return to SUFC as a registered footballer, the Club is not prepared at this time to decide that issue.]]

nope, still couldn't decide, on 11th November, if it's OK to have a convicted rapist as a public hero and role model.

Luckily there are other people who are capable of deciding.

TheAlias · 15/11/2014 18:44

You guys do know that Sheffield United are in League One, right? Ched Evans was a decent enough player at that league but he hasn't trained for ages and is now very damaged goods. If he trains hard and manages to get back to something like what he was, some club somewhere will probably offer him a contract, provided that he apologises publically etc (which he will have to if he wants to pay again) However, that club will be taking a big risk and will expect to get him very cheap. He really isn't going to earn a massive footballer's salary, ever.

AuntieStella · 15/11/2014 18:47

And of course, the current League One is pretty much what was League Three when I were a lass.

TheAlias · 15/11/2014 18:49

Exactly Stella and now the lower leagues get no (very little) TV money, wages there have actually fallen over the last 10 years.

Nomarymary · 15/11/2014 18:50

Good.

Mushypeasandchipstogo · 15/11/2014 19:57

Not much to add but great news, shame it took so long to reach this decision.

HappyAgainOneDay · 15/11/2014 20:39

With his high profile, it could be that other companies (who employ street cleaners or burger bars or run call centres) will not employ him either especially if they have women employees.

PigletJohn · 15/11/2014 20:45

the directors and owners of SUFC should be ashamed that they did not consider it to be important enough to make a decision about until after they had their arms twisted and were abandoned by supporters and sponsors.

Two days was enough to make a decision.

So why wasn't two and a half years enough?

addictedtobass · 15/11/2014 20:52

YANBU. Shame they've only deduced that he's toxic to their brand, not toxic in general-especially to women. They should never have offered him back in the first place, all they've said is that it's fine for them to sign on a rapist unless/unless it affects them. Once it affects them with public outcry and sponsors pulling out then he's toxic. Rapists are toxic from the fucking start.

Far as I can see they're all disgusting in their attitudes- you can see where idiots people may try and justify the idea it's 'acceptable' when it's minimised like this.

Icimoi · 15/11/2014 21:17

TheAlias, any apology would have to be demonstrably sincere, and he would have to explain convincingly how and why he allowed his family and girlfriend to demonise his victim. It'so not impossible, but it's not looking too likely at the moment.

clam · 15/11/2014 21:28

So he's only just become toxic? Meaning he wasn't before, like when he raped that girl?

CelesteToTheDance · 15/11/2014 22:24

I hope this is true. I don't understand how is family and his girlfriend and her family haven't been prosecuted for their vile campaign of harassment and libel against his poor victim.

That these people have gotten away with that is disgusting and outrageous. She's on her third new identity Angry

Aduaz · 15/11/2014 22:28

YANBU. He sounds like utter scum.

indigo18 · 15/11/2014 22:52

Actually, I hope his girlfriend does hang around. They seem ideally well suited. I'm sure her sour face when she realises he is a nobody will be a great comfort.

sausageandorangepickle · 15/11/2014 23:11

While I am sure the big sponsorship deals etc were probably the main thing that convinced the club he is 'toxic', over 160,00 people have signed a petition against him being re-instated there - many of them SUFC fans.

Viviennemary · 15/11/2014 23:16

Let's not be under any illusion why they won't be signing Ched Evans. They haven't taken the high moral stand. They aren't signing him because the publicity has been so bad, sponsors have dropped out and spoken up. If they hadn't he'd be signed. Nothing to do with the club itself or their opinion of the Ched Evans.

pissinmy2shoes · 15/11/2014 23:16

so glad
I do hope the "football fans" will stop sticking up for this convicted rapist

Viviennemary · 15/11/2014 23:17

Exactly Clam. Didn't see your post.

lem73 · 15/11/2014 23:21

Doesn't feel like something to celebrate when it took so much pressure.

differentnameforthis · 15/11/2014 23:21

thealias when does his victim get to live her life? His friends, family and supporters have hounded her so much she is in witness protection and he is staying silent on the matter, so to me he is condoning their actions. And his sentance isn't served, as he is still on licence!

differentnameforthis · 15/11/2014 23:28

thealias he is never going to apologise because he doesn't think he has done anything wrong.
