To find the treatment of Amy on Big Bang so unpleasant I don't like the show any more

I just find it painful to watch. Her friendship with the other women has been turned from a slightly uncomfortable but also endearing dynamic into one in which they seem to constantly snigger at her, and cut her out when they can, and as for the relationship with Sheldon... It's like watching Olive in On The Buses again. It's humiliating and unnecessary.

Her character was such a strong one at first, and over the series it's become actually pathetic, in its truest sense. She is rejected all round, and it's just not funny.

I'm a bit behind with TBBT so I just googled Penny there to see the haircut of which you speak. Hmm, I quite like it, but I agree it makes her look older. However, a quick glance at google images tells me it is not actually the most ageing hairstyle she has had. This one makes her look older as well.

I think she is very beautiful though, and photos of her looking very lovely indeed are much more common than unflattering ones. Smile

I really like pennys new hair one of my dds had her hair that short a few years ago it was lovely best hairstyle she ever had

Nancy66 · 12/11/2014 13:05

I think she's facially quite plain which is why the hair doesn't work.
Same as Jennifer Aniston really. the whole package works but change something and it all goes wrong.

Moln · 12/11/2014 13:06

One thing for sure is I do like Penny's furnishing - especially her bed spread

Mrsjayy · 12/11/2014 13:07

I had my hair very short once I was 16 or 17 I looked like a 12yr old boy and not in that cool tomboy way just a podgy little boy

Gruntfuttock · 12/11/2014 13:19

This is the new haircut

yes, my post was a bit misleading because I posted that photo as if that was the new haircut. The short one is definitely much more flattering than the one I posted the photo of. Smile

the way Amy loves and fancies penny

Maybe I'm missing something here (I don't watch every episode) but I don't see it that way. I read Amy's behaviour towards Penny as Amy not knowing how to express friendship. Amy does not understand the boundaries. She likes Penny, so goes overboard in her demonstration of that liking. She is physically frustrated and does not know what to do with that feeling. She is particularly close to two people; one of them (Sheldon) squashes her every time she tries to express her affection physically, so the other one (Penny) gets it instead.

I think her hair looks better now - she looks more together but I am over 40 and am surprised by the way that so many young women have long flicky hair nowadays.

Gruntfuttock · 12/11/2014 13:31

I agree treaclethe hairstyle you posted was much more ageing than the new pixie cut, which I like.

Behoove · 12/11/2014 13:42

It's a very funny programme. It's on my 'don't miss' list with Gogglebox

ClangerOnaComeDown · 12/11/2014 22:10

Does anyone remember her from '8 simple rules'?

Pretty much the same role.

frankie001 · 12/11/2014 23:33

Just heard that the lady who did the voice of Howards mother has died. Sad

GatoradeMeBitch · 13/11/2014 01:50

I can't believe people complain that the show has gone downhill since Bernadette and Amy became regular cats members. They improve the show! They could jettison dull Leonard and recover within an episode...

I live with an undiagnosed aspie (he relates to Sheldon, and my dss is a diagnosed aspie) I love tbbt because it is a comical take on the complexity of asd... It actually helps the rest of the family 'get' the issues we have to tread carefully around and also we use Sheldon to explain to dss why some of the things he does are unusual and often very annoying or offensive (for example he has a horrible habit of explaining jokes which he finds funny but aren't: we had the "Sheldon does that, look how the others react... They still don't find it funny, but look at when he tells a funny joke... It doesn't need explaining and everyone laughs with him instead of at him"). I feel for Amy, I am very much like her- straight laced and fairly traditional, easily pleased, independent and just wanting a loving happy relationship- DP can find closeness and emotions difficult but appreciates Sheldon's struggle and it occasionally makes him see how frustrating he can be.

I love the aspies in my life and love tbbt- none of us find it in any way offensive. I have known people throughout life (I am a physicist too) who are like each of the characters and the quirks are exaggerated but it's comedy ffs- I find them all endearing in their own way.

Maybe people would find the way we deal with asd offensive by using a tv show to illustrate things, but with both DP and dss, tbbt is an insight for them into the ups and downs of aspergers (yes I know Sheldon isn't officially diagnosed) and makes them see that although they see things differently, it's not wrong, it's not something to hide or be ashamed of. I personally think that Sheldon is a better role model for my dss that most asd characters on tv- yes he plays geeky games and reads comics (we are a geek family too- a trip to the comic shop is the highlight of our weekend) but he also holds down a good job, is well respected, has a group of friends who may be frustrated by him sometimes, but do genuinely care about him.

AmysTiara · 13/11/2014 08:36

Just remembered the episode where Bernadette and Amy leave Penny out when they go for a drink because they're bored listening to her moaning about her acting job.

I preferred it when it was the boys and Penny too

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 13/11/2014 09:08

I love TBBT. Especially Evil Bernadette. I love the bit in the parking space episode where she says "Howie didn't key your car." "How do you know?" "Because I did." But whoever said upthread that Amy had a can of change in her purse on purpose to hit Bernadette with was wrong - Amy just happened to be carrying the change so she could take it to the bank. She wasn't going out armed to attack!

Yay, new episode tonight! I'm watching on E4 - it sounds as though some of you are ahead of that.

The first episode of this series - Amy was pissed off because Sheldon called Leonard instead of her to come rescue him, but then he explained that he didn't want her to know that he couldn't cope with being out on his own. He was thinking about her and her reactions were very important to him.

Mrsjayy · 13/11/2014 09:10
