To find the treatment of Amy on Big Bang so unpleasant I don't like the show any more

I just find it painful to watch. Her friendship with the other women has been turned from a slightly uncomfortable but also endearing dynamic into one in which they seem to constantly snigger at her, and cut her out when they can, and as for the relationship with Sheldon... It's like watching Olive in On The Buses again. It's humiliating and unnecessary.

Her character was such a strong one at first, and over the series it's become actually pathetic, in its truest sense. She is rejected all round, and it's just not funny.

I think both Sheldon and Amy potentially have ASD/Asperger's - they certainly show traits. I'd agree with the poster upthread who says that Amy's relationships can sometimes make uncomfortable viewing because they reflect some people's reality. I have ASD and a lot of her behaviour chimes with me.

That said, I still find it funny rather than finding it particularly offensive. There are some uncomfortable jokes but it's also quite realistic IMO.

I only started watching TBBT in the last season because people kept telling me how great it was. The Sheldon -Amy thing turned me straight off. He's an abusive prick. And I also intensely dislike the way being intelligent is correlated with social awkwardness.

Eastpoint · 12/11/2014 06:56

I think it was funnier before it turned into a show about couples. Now it is more mainstream & less sciencey.

SunshineAndShadows · 12/11/2014 07:25

I actually think on some levels it's made social awkwardness, science and 'geekyness' more socially acceptable. Yes we laugh at the characters but the it's a sitcom and I can't think of any sitcom where you don't laugh at the characters. Their race or social awkwardness is not the reason for laughing at them it's simply part of who they are. Is it only acceptable to have white NT sitcom characters? Confused Surely that would be a bigger type of discrimination

Mrsjayy · 12/11/2014 07:53

Just seen the actress who played mrs wolowitz has died Sad

ZingOfSeven · 12/11/2014 07:56

oh no MrsJayySad

GreatAuntDinah · 12/11/2014 08:39

Yes a lot of people say it's made geekiness mainstream sunshine but what I dislike is the idea that being smart makes you a weirdo, even if being a weirdo is then seen as cool. Admittedly a show about clever people behaving normally with no hang-ups would be a shit sitcom.

AmysTiara · 12/11/2014 09:03

Love the show as you can probably tell from my username but I hate the way Amy loves and fancies penny. It's so cringe worthy.

Tapewormuprisings · 12/11/2014 11:20

I agree, I really don't like the show anymore, but this happened with how I met your mother too. They all turned into vile, creepy characters and it was painful to watch!

I think a lot of the story lines are quite amusing, and I really like the fact that Sheldon and Amy didn't just jump into bed as it wouldn't suit the characters, but all of the characters are horrible!

Gruntfuttock · 12/11/2014 11:34

"but I loathe Penny's new haircut. just no"

I love it and I think it really suits her.

Chrysanthemum5 · 12/11/2014 11:46

I really liked Amy's character when she first arrived, and her relationship with Sheldon was perfect for them. However now they have made Amy very needy, and it's simply not funny to watch her desperately trying to get some affection from Sheldon. I think if the sexes were reversed (a man constantly trying to get more physical affection from an unwilling partner) people wouldn't find it funny at all.

And, Leonard, and Howard are just creepy.

Moln · 12/11/2014 11:47

Don't overtly like Penny's new haircut, it's not horrible but it'd probably look nicer a little longer.

I quite like Penny's character - she puts up with a lot of horrible things being said to her by Sheldon and doesn't seem to hold it against him.

squoosh · 12/11/2014 11:50

I think Penny's hair is awful, it ages her so much.

ScrambledSmegs · 12/11/2014 11:54

I really like her hair. It's funky. In a good way.

squoosh · 12/11/2014 12:01

I think it's unfunky in a Fiona Bruce kinda way.

Gruntfuttock · 12/11/2014 12:06

Well, in that case, squoosh, kindly consider yourself frowned at.

ClangerOnaComeDown · 12/11/2014 12:17

The thing that I always wonder is how does Penny afford her apartment? A part time waitress with a couple minor acting roles can afford such a big apartment when Sheldon and Lenord with good full time jobs have to share to afford theirs?

Moln · 12/11/2014 12:24

hmmm not sure we should question that Clanger because there's no answer

askyfullofstars · 12/11/2014 12:34

But isnt Penny's apartment much smaller than Sheldon and Leonards - it only has one tiny bedroom - which the bathroom is off, as opposed to two bedrooms seperate bath and large living area?

ZingOfSeven · 12/11/2014 12:42

to be honest Penny's haircut is not bad in itself. it's just that her face doesn't go with it

squoosh · 12/11/2014 12:45

Pixie cuts are like fringes, they either look 'wow' or 'ow' and you won't know till you get one. I thought I'd really suit a fringe, I didn't. I looked like one of the Princes in the Tower.

ZingOfSeven · 12/11/2014 12:47

so what haircut do you have squoosh?

squoosh · 12/11/2014 12:48

One that will hopefully have an inch of frazzled ends lobbed off it this weekend!

ZingOfSeven · 12/11/2014 12:50

I think that will suit you!Grin

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 12/11/2014 12:53

I always figured Pennys dad helped her out with money - her brother in in jail for drug related crimes so I just figured he was pleased she was the sensible one.
