To find the treatment of Amy on Big Bang so unpleasant I don't like the show any more

I just find it painful to watch. Her friendship with the other women has been turned from a slightly uncomfortable but also endearing dynamic into one in which they seem to constantly snigger at her, and cut her out when they can, and as for the relationship with Sheldon... It's like watching Olive in On The Buses again. It's humiliating and unnecessary.

Her character was such a strong one at first, and over the series it's become actually pathetic, in its truest sense. She is rejected all round, and it's just not funny.

Just watched the latest US episode, where things change a bit for Amy & Sheldon :)

IceBeing · 11/11/2014 13:50

Isn't the whole thing an excuse to laugh at people with ASD?

Why would anyone watch that?

HeeHiles · 11/11/2014 13:52

We're meant to feel for him but a lot of the time he's manipulative

Yuk! That episode in which Penny hadn't told her father she and Leonard had split up and pretended to still be in a relationship was horrible to watch.

There was also and episode where the men were trying for a promotion I think and Penny wore a dress with her cleavage out and Sheldon remarked that Amy should get her breasts out!

There are a few disappointing moments but on the whole the they all take the piss out of each other - but agree that Amy's character has changed from being very assertive to quite clingy so would like to see her toughen up a bit - I think Stuart would have treated her nicely, look how lovely he is with Debbie Wink

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2014 13:53

None of them are Autistic

amy83firsttimer · 11/11/2014 13:59

I think ice is saying that because of Sheldon's behaviour being very high-functioning autistic / aspergers-like.

Gen35 · 11/11/2014 14:02

Amy is too sweet for the constant rejection to be funny, or maybe it's too close to the bone for me! I agree at the start she was less likeable and it just got old over time but haven't seen the latest. Agree - Leonard is a total whiney PITA, no idea why we're supposed to want them to stay together!

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2014 14:14

They do make it clear that sheldon isn't Asd though,

IsabellaRoarsome · 11/11/2014 14:32

I believe his mother had him tested.....extensively Wink

SauvignonBlanche · 11/11/2014 14:36

Isn't the whole thing an excuse to laugh at people with ASD?

Say whaaaat?!! Confused

TheJiminyConjecture · 11/11/2014 14:36

I think the writers have become lazier as the show has increased in popularity. It was certainly sharper and funnier in the earlier seasons.

amy83firsttimer · 11/11/2014 14:37

His mother's thick as shit though so probably got him tested for all the wrong things!

squoosh · 11/11/2014 14:41

I don't think Sheldon's mother seems thick as shit. She has emotional intelligence.

BertieBotts · 11/11/2014 14:42

I can't stand TBBT, DH loves it. Yes to everything mentioned here.

The entire premise is shit. "Hot girl lives opposite house of geeky guys". Wow, that's not going to be cliche ridden or sexist in the slightest.

DishwasherDogs · 11/11/2014 14:43

I always thought it was obvious that Sheldon has Aspergers, but the makers won't admit it for some reason.

He was tested and found not to be crazy - ASD isn't crazy, so agree with Amy, he was tested for the wrong things.

basgetti · 11/11/2014 14:44

Yuk! That episode in which Penny hadn't told her father she and Leonard had split up and pretended to still be in a relationship was horrible to watch.

I hated that episode, he kept pawing at her and she was cringing, it was awful. I think the whole show has gone downhill the last couple of years. Sheldon used to be awkward but now I just think he is really smug and I hate the way he treats Amy. None of them are particularly likable. And they just seem to lift storylines directly from Friends now.

JoanHickson · 11/11/2014 14:45

Yes he said he was checked for mental health issues. Autism is neurological.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/11/2014 14:49

He treats Amy no worse than he treats other people. It's who he is. In fact she's the only person that he regularly admits to caring about.

He's not a 'nice' character. I like him though. I like them all. Particularly Bernadette.

TheIronGnome · 11/11/2014 14:52

Of course Sheldon has ASD.

I also find it hard to watch as the characters ASD traits seems to be the butt of most of the jokes... Not really my thing.

ScrambledSmegs · 11/11/2014 14:54

And he has said that prior to being with Amy he had no interest in a physical relationship ever, whereas now he is open to the possibility. Which is a MAJOR thing for Sheldon to admit.

D&D episode.

I have Asperger's.

I'd say Amy had it. I see a lot of similarities between her and myself.

With Sheldon I'd say it was more an OCD thing and because he didn't ever have peers, he was always several years ahead at school so never had classmates his own age. Spent a lot of time alone, didn't socialise and got stuck in his ways.

I don't know how old Sheldon is supposed to be but I always got the impression that he was a good few years older than the other guys.

DaisyFlowerChain · 11/11/2014 15:01

I love the show. Three girls being friends will always have a dynamic to it.

I don't like Bernadettes character, the way she treats Howard re controlling every penny he spends despite him having a salary is awful not funny.

When Amy and Sheldon met, both wanted no physical contact so Sheldon was clear from the start and its Amy that has changed her mind.

I love the mums, they play such good parts. Sheldonis my favourite, especially the episode he shows his softer human side where he asks Penny not to hurt his friend.

Jengnr · 11/11/2014 15:02

Amy's not a nice character at all. She was awful to Bernadette in the run up to her wedding and she's really mean to the monkeys.

DishwasherDogs · 11/11/2014 15:04

Amy's character has really changed over the years.
She has become more flexible than she ever was. In the early days she was more similar to Sheldon.

CharmQuark · 11/11/2014 15:07

And let's not ignore the racial issues around the treatment of the Raj character .

But every episode gives me ate at one big belly laugh. I think it is best when it is just the 4 friends being geeky nerdy boys . Everything else comes with a cringe factor.
