To find the treatment of Amy on Big Bang so unpleasant I don't like the show any more

I just find it painful to watch. Her friendship with the other women has been turned from a slightly uncomfortable but also endearing dynamic into one in which they seem to constantly snigger at her, and cut her out when they can, and as for the relationship with Sheldon... It's like watching Olive in On The Buses again. It's humiliating and unnecessary.

Her character was such a strong one at first, and over the series it's become actually pathetic, in its truest sense. She is rejected all round, and it's just not funny.

Tbh I think Bernadette is only controlling over money because Howard is a spendthrift. Remember the action figures / 3D printer debacle? His justification was that his wife had a big salary.

Not cool, Howie. Not. Cool.

Gruntfuttock · 11/11/2014 15:13

No one else could have said "It's a tiara!" the way she did. Grin

TBBT is one of my favourite programmes.

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2014 15:21

I love Amys tiara I wANT 1

Mrsjayy · 11/11/2014 15:24

Sheldons mum is hilarious she so isn't thick as shit im sure she took him to huston to be tested Wink I love her relationship with Sheldon

Fabulassie · 11/11/2014 15:29

All of the characters have changed. In the first episode, Sheldon and Leonard had just masturbated to sell sperm. I believe Sheldon expresses a preference for big-bottomed girl porn. Now, he's pretty much asexual.

GlacindaTheTroll · 11/11/2014 15:31

"I think it is best when it is just the 4 friends being geeky nerdy boys"

I agree, and that's why I like ep2 best so far of the current series.

weeblueberry · 11/11/2014 15:32

To be fair wasn't that the unaired pilot where their characters were still being focused tested at the time? From the second episode on there was a major shift in his character...

Nancy66 · 11/11/2014 15:35

It's gone off the boil but I still watch it.

I think it comes across that Penny cares a lot about Amy. I like their friendship.

outofcontrol2014 · 11/11/2014 15:36

The racial politics of the show are even worse than the sexual politics.

Some of the 'Indian' jokes are just awful.

BeeRayKay · 11/11/2014 15:44

I can't help but think some people are looking too deeply at the show.

KingJoffreysBloodshotEye · 11/11/2014 16:00

I can't help but think some people are looking too deeply at the show.

True.

The Simpsons is worse but no one ever psychoanalyses that...

Tzibeleh · 11/11/2014 16:08

I agree that her character has changed over time, but I still like the show and watch it far more often than I ever did Friends. Because shows like Friends only ever showed me the unattainable idealisation of relationships. Amy in TBBT is both comforting viewing and uncomfortable viewing, because, for some women, her social relationships are their reality. Something that is rarely ever recognised. I identify with Amy.

Yarp · 11/11/2014 16:18

Have always assumes Sheldon to be on the autistic spectrum.

DanaBarrett · 11/11/2014 17:47

I identify with Amy too. I find aspects of the girls uncomfortable to watch because I think it can be quite realistic in places. Amy lacks social skills but has still made friends with one of the 'popular' girls, and Bernadette, well, I think we can all be controlling, and she stood up to Howard's mom, I have an ex-MIL like that lol.....

Tobyjugg · 11/11/2014 22:06

BeeRayKay Agree totally.

Episode of The Big Bang Theory running on E4 right now Sheldon and Koothrapoli are discussing Sheldons relationship with Amy and how Sheldon has an "agreement" with her that she wont see other men who are just friends.

Koothrapoli ....but you dont have sex with her either.
Sheldon.........Slick huh.

Audience laughs.

There you go The withholding of affection and sex towards women and the controlling or curbing of their sexuality played for cheap laughs. THIS is how it is.

(its H who watches this show not me)

Well I managed to get past the episode where Amy was pretending to be ill, so Sheldon could rub Vicks on her chest and bath her.

Then when he innocently spanked her for telling lies, she acted like a complete perv and told him to do it harder.

I managed to get past it all be remembering it's not real Wink

PanIsNotAButterfly · 11/11/2014 22:57

Quite Worra, it's a comedy programme, in case anyone missed it, that's the premise of the show.... And excellently funny. Only surpassed currently by gogglebox.

Moln · 11/11/2014 23:18

Does it pass the Bechdel Test? I think it does.

Can't deny I really like it - but there are a few things that bother me the Indian remarks are frequently uncomfortable and Amy's neediness and the fact that because she's (supposed to be) unattractive she doesn't have any say in her relationship.

She should have stuck it out with the comic shop guy (who's name I have now forgotten)

DishwasherDogs · 11/11/2014 23:21

Worra, that's one of my favourite episodes! How wrong of me is that? Blush

Tobyjugg · 12/11/2014 00:14

I am amazed that no one has yet mentioned the episode where Sheldon says Flatland is one of his favourite books.

Still think far too much deep thought is being given to what is basically just a sitcom.

IceBeing · 12/11/2014 00:35

It doesn't really take deep thought to not find laughing at disability that funny.

I mean if someone produced a sitcom the main thrust of which was to laugh at someone with Tourettes syndrome constantly losing their job and getting thrown out of places, I also wouldn't have to think hard about whether I found it funny...or maybe someone with CP who hilariously spills stuff all the time and gets ignored because people can't be bothered to wait and hear them out....or someone with DS who always misunderstands and is the butt of all the jokes.

Nope definitely no deep thought required.

ZingOfSeven · 12/11/2014 00:55

I don't agree. I think Amy is getting more confident and they are kissing and she has changed Sheldon a lot.
and thankfully she started to wear prettier clothes - those shapeless floral numbers were getting on my nerves.

but I loathe Penny's new haircut. just no
