Ched Evans Should NOT be allowed to train at Sheffield United !! Wales next?

DuelingFanjo · 11/11/2014 11:04

seriously?
I am absolutely appalled. I really really hope this doesn't mean he will ever play for Wales. I will definitely be taking part in some kind of protest if that happens.

Yes on the one hand he's done the crime and served his time
BUT
He's done an awful crime, if he was a teacher, a police officer, a priest he couldn't return to work, so why should a footballer be any different.

I was so sad to read it yesterday that he was back, he's shown no remourse, no acceptance of what he's done is wrong (even if he didn't class it as 'rape'having sex with a girl that out of it is wrong). I just hope the sponsors show their might.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/11/2014 08:42

Seems to me that someone needs to explain to SUFC what "rehabilitation" means.

Their statement suggests they think the rapist Ched Evans can be rehabilitated through football training.

Hmm
saoirse31 · 12/11/2014 08:48

presumably if he's currently appealing his conviction then he clearly can't at the same time day 'yes I raped her'.

He may be all that posters describe, and probably is, but he's still entitled to appeal.

He may genuinely believe he's innocent, if he believes that, and is pursuing appeal, why should he have to say hes guilty? to assuage public opinion?

purplefeathers · 12/11/2014 08:48

I'm impressed with charlie Webster. Good on her for publicly standing up for what she believes in.

I get tired of hearing 'he's done his time' (not aimed pp by the way). He hasn't done his time. He's completed the custodial part of his punishment. He's still serving a sentence so he's still doing his time.

He needs to understand why what he did was rape and apologise.

I'm interested to know what kind of work his probation officer is doing with him to address his behaviour and thinking skills.

purplefeathers · 12/11/2014 08:50

Saoirse, even if there had been no rape he treated that young woman atrociously. He should still recognise that and apologise.

And he should publicly condemn the behaviour of his family and supporters who have hounded that woman into hiding.

purplefeathers · 12/11/2014 08:53

I also agree with your post alicedoesntlivehere

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 09:03

Yes, there would be nothing stopping him apologising on behalf of his cronies, for the disgusting way they harassed the victim. He could do that and still go through with an appeal.

That way even if he truly believes his own innocence, it might go some way to suggesting that him and those around him are not completely rotten to the core cunts.

Can I just ask about Charlie Webster? I have seen some stuff on twitter about her tweeting about 'being excited to meet Mike Tyson' or something? As in the convicted rapist Mike Tyson? Isnt that a bit hypocritical, or have I only been reading one side of the story?

twofingerstoGideon · 12/11/2014 09:08

I'm also impressed by Charlie Webster. At last, someone with connections to the team demonstrates they have some principles!

On a different issue, I think the club needs to think about its use of the words 'mob justice' in its statement. Ched Evans was convicted by a jury. That still stands. Describing people who think he should not be re-signed as a 'mob' is just a way of trying to shut them up, isn't it?

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 12/11/2014 09:09

she did tweet that, Never but then she apologised later for that. Interestingly, I do know a fair few people that know of Mike Tyson and his sports history, however, do not know of the rape history. These are people that are younger than me, so in their 20's.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/11/2014 09:14

Damnautocorrect did you see purplefeathers post? They are right that he hasn't "done his time" - he's done half of his time in prison and is still doing the rest of his time on licence.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 12/11/2014 09:15

I admire Charlie Webster's stance, but- I can't help but thinking she was probably the lone voice of dissent in the club, they are now pleased to see her go as they can take him back with no objections from within SU.

I wish one of the players would speak out, saying they don't want to play alongside a rapist. The blinkered fans might just pay a bit of attention then. As it is they probably just think- 'oh well we got rid of another whinging bird'. It is a shocking attitude , and I fear for my daughters also.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 12/11/2014 09:33

I would like to see the sponsors pull out, or threaten to pull out, if he is re-signed. The higher ups in the sporting world may not acknowledge moral issues, but they sure as hell pay attention to monetary issues.

SuburbanRhonda · 12/11/2014 09:36

I saw Charlie Webster being interviewed a couple of weeks ago on TV (can't remember the programme) and the interviewer brought up her comments about being excited to meet Mike Tyson.

She admitted she regretted making the comment and didn't think it through. She seemed genuinely willing to admit that she'd made a mistake and was in no way glossing over the comment.

PuffinsAreFicticious · 12/11/2014 09:38

Blue Portal, one of the club's sponsors has today said that they won't pull out, because they support the team not individual rapists players. So, we know what that company feels about rape now.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 09:41

I do think the 'he hasn't done his time, he is out on licence' thing is a little bit irrelevant - coming out early and remaining on licence for the rest of the sentence is the norm. And as SU say in their statement (one of the only bits which isn't bollocks) there is nothing stopping anyone on Evan's licence conditions gaining employment on release from prison.

Personally I don't think SU should take him back, if he is still on licence or not.

Am disappointed about Charlie Webster actually, that is a fairly big gaffe to make, i was hoping it had been made up or something. As a sports presenter, of course she will be aware that Mike Tyson has a conviction and was sent to prison for rape. She obviously 'forgot' he is a rapist and it just makes her cause a little bit less credible, because surely as a sports presenter and activist for women's rights, Mike Tyson would be up there in your psyche?

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 09:48

And it wasnt general tweet about mike Tyson, it was a 'OMG so excited to see him' tweet - it just shows that 'rape' is far from the first thing she thinks when she thinks of him. People have allowed him to move on from it, and if that applies to mike Tyson then why shouldn't it apply to Ched Evans?

I don't know, I am still glad she is speaking out about this, it's jus that that tweet speaks volumes ( of things that I don't want it to say!)

DuelingFanjo · 12/11/2014 09:54

"but he's still entitled to appeal"

Legally I wonder if this is actually incorrect?
He might be entitled to seek an appeal (Which he already has done at least once) but no one is automatically entitled to appeal are they?

His last attempt at an appeal was thrown out before it even got to the appealing stage.

RE the clubs who are taking these men back, I think there should be as much of a fuss kicked up about the way in which these players are being taught by their clubs. Clearly, as there are so many football players out there being accused of assault and killing people while driving drunk there must be something clubs can do to stop their players from ending up like this?

OP posts:
ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 12/11/2014 09:55

What the club actually need to say is 'we will not let CE train in our grounds and will not be resigning him, as we do not employ people who condone violence towards women, or who have an unrepentant history of violence towards women'

And then pigs with wings will come shooting out of my arse.

Viviennemary · 12/11/2014 10:05

I must say Charlie Webster does look very bad regards the Mike Tyson quote. It's a complete contradiction. Did she feel safe in the hotel corridor. I know who I'd think was the most danger to women. Very bad.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 12/11/2014 10:08

I wonder if Chet Evans' supporters have thought about whether or not his conviction would bar his entry into some countries. This could put a damper on any international play.

FreakinScaryCaaw · 12/11/2014 10:12

It was mentioned on the radio this morning as I drove dss to school and college. DS2, an avid footy fan of 14 said no way should he be allowed to play. DS1 (17) agreed. They just can't get their heads around it?

It's so disrespectful to the rape victim and her family.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/11/2014 10:21

I don't see how the Mike Tyson thing invalidates Charlie Webster's opinion on Ched Evans. She's acknowledged the contradiction and expressed her regret. If anything, it strengthens the notion that you can actually make a mistake and learn from it, and that an opinion you held once need not define you forever.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 12/11/2014 10:24

I don't think it invalidates Charlie Webster's opinion either. I only linked those articles about Mike Tyson as I thought it was interesting that he too is denying it was rape and still refuses to apologise years later.

Maybe the answer is for clubs to be more proactive .. take a stand and show that there is no middle ground for condoning criminal activity... oh wait, will they have many players left then? Hmm

Steben · 12/11/2014 10:26

I am appalled, outraged and disgusted. I will be at the forefront of any protest I am utterly utterly ashamed of the people at that club.
