Ched Evans Should NOT be allowed to train at Sheffield United !! Wales next?

DuelingFanjo · 11/11/2014 11:04

seriously?
I am absolutely appalled. I really really hope this doesn't mean he will ever play for Wales. I will definitely be taking part in some kind of protest if that happens.

Of course it invalidates her opinion. She was admiring and wanting a photograph of a convicted rapist. It should not be different rules for different people.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 12/11/2014 10:34

I suppose you have to look at it as her interest in meeting a sports figure in a one off in a public venue as opposed to working with and appearing to condone his behaviour as the situation would be with the rapist Ched Evans. (I must remember to put his full title when referring to him)

A bit NIMBY, yes, but I can at least see the difference. I wouldn't feel comfortable with either situation, personally, but I guess there is a bit of a blurry line there.

twofingerstoGideon · 12/11/2014 10:52

Of course it invalidates her opinion. (viviennemary says)

Because no-one should ever, ever change their mind or regret something? Charlie Webster has already said publicly she regrets the Mike Tyson thing.

There are many things I've said and thought in the past, which make me cringe now. If only I was as perfect as viviennemary.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 10:59

She hasn't 'changed her mind', she forgot he was a rapist. I am assuming that as a sports presenter in her 30s she was aware of Mike Tyson's history. She forgot about it, which is the very thing she is campaigning for people not to do about Ched Evans. That makes her a hypocrite, and its a shame because it just gives more fuel to Ched's supporters and makes her less credible.

DuelingFanjo · 12/11/2014 11:01

Someone has just asked me on Twitter where I draw the line on Rape... you know like when people are a little bit rapey or just a little bit raped. Arses.

Charlie Webster has made a right mug of herself. She is a SPORTS presenter and women's rights campaigner….who tweeted 'OMG so excited to see him' about the convicted rapist Mike Tyson…, how could she just ‘forget’ about his background, the apology may come but seriously it’s a massive mistake, she 100% knew his whole background and it completely undermines any stand she is trying to make about Chad Evans.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 11:09

because it just gives more fuel to Ched's supporters and makes her less credible.

And here comes upthehammers1 to prove my very point.

twofingerstoGideon · 12/11/2014 11:09

Charlie Watson was 10 years old when Tyson was convicted so his 'convicted rapist' status may not have been uppermost in her mind when she saw him. She has said she regrets wanting a photograph with him. I don't think her actions mean she's not entitled to express an opinion for the rest of her life. This is just another example of the way people try to shut women up.

In fact, her stance on Ched Evans seems even more courageous given that she must have known the Tyson episode would invariably be dragged up by the Ched Evans apologists.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2014 11:10

Charlie Webster made a fool of herself wrt Mike Tyson. She's talking sense and behaving with integrity over Ched Evans.

twofingerstoGideon · 12/11/2014 11:11

...it completely undermines any stand she is trying to make about Chad Evans

Only in the eyes of rape apologists I imagine.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 12/11/2014 11:13

'I don't think her actions mean she's not entitled to express an opinion for the rest of her life. This is just another example of the way people try to shut women up.'

Yes, this.

MonicaFree · 12/11/2014 11:13

Charlie Webster has done a brilliant thing that more than makes up for the Tyson comment. She is awesome and fantastic. She has risked the wrath of the same people who drove a 19yo rape victim into hiding. Go her.

UptheHammers1 · 12/11/2014 11:17

Mike Tyson is one of the most famous sportsman in the world, any top sports presenter will know his whole background, Charlie Webster wasnt born when George Best was playing football and England Won the world cup, it doesnt stop you knowing about the history.

Her comments may be correct and she is talking sense but coming from her they do not hold much credibility,.

Viviennemary · 12/11/2014 11:17

People shouldn't be making excuses for Charlie Webster. The point is Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist. Now the first thing that springs to my mind is that Mike Tyson is a convicted rapist. Should he be free to wander hotel corridors. That isn't up to me is it. And it isn't up to Charlie Webster to say whether or not Ched Evans should be allowed back into football. And that it why this trial by twitter or whatever is wrong.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 11:18

Charlie Watson was 10 years old when Tyson was convicted so his 'convicted rapist' status may not have been uppermost in her mind when she saw him.

No, sorry, I am exactly the same age as her (and not really into sports all that much) and the when I hear Mike Tyson I first think 'boxer' closely followed by 'rape'. It's the fact that she forgot, when she is imploring people not to forget about Evans, that is why what she says will be discredited by people now. And it was fairly recently she made this tweet as well, certainly while the whole Evans thing has been going on.

DuelingFanjo · 12/11/2014 11:23

hang on

so you are saying that because she once made a silly comment she's not allowed to have an opinion on a rapist who has shown no remorse being allowed to start training with a football club.

Ched's supporters lack any credibility anyway. They might, if they recognised that what he did was rape and that he's not shown any remorse or attempt to stop his family and friends harassing his victim.

Surely - given the choice of supporting a rapist or supporting Charlile Webster despite her previous comment you would always choose not to support the rapist?

Yes obviously Hmm but why is it an either or? I agree with what she is saying about him not coming back, I am saying it is a shame that she has come across as a hypocrite.

UptheHammers1 · 12/11/2014 11:27

Can everyone please stop trying to defend Charlie Webster. She is a SPORTS presenter, she knows about Mike Tyson and his background, she could not have forgotten he is a convicted rapist, Charlie has spoken about being abused as a child, she would not forget about this fact about Mike Tyson knowing she was soon going to meet the man.

Her comments and stand she is taking against Sheffield United may be commendable but now also looks like a complete hypocrite.

I dont think anyone here is supporting a rapist but given her tweets i dont think Charlie Webster should be given any news time either.

Viviennemary · 12/11/2014 11:30

I'd say wanting a a photo of yourself with a convicted rapist is as much of a rape apologist as anyone on this thread. Sorry she is a complete and utter hypocrite and has no credibility. If I came on here and said oooooh I'd love a photo of myself with Ched Evans (which I wouldn't!) then I'd be hung drawn and quartered. Let's stop the different rules and oh well she made a mistake. That's being apologist IMHO.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 11:30

I just think she would have been in a much better position to talk about this, as a female representative of Sheffield United, if she hasn't tweeted about being excited to meet a convicted rapist. People won't listen to one of the line female voices speaking out about this now, because she fucked up big time.

HotDogJumpingFrogAlburquerque · 12/11/2014 11:32

Well said, DF

I am interested in sports, and football a bit, although not boxing, admittedly. I had no idea about Mike Tyson being a rapist until this Charlie Webster comment. I'm 30.

She said something stupid. She has learnt. It doesn't invalidate her point at all. People who are rape apologists are just trying to deflect the attention away from the rapist Ched Evans so he can slink back into football.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 12/11/2014 11:37

It is a real shame that one of the few public women taking an active stand against the rapist's return fucked up majorly wrt to meeting Mike Tyson, for sure.

However, where are the male voices joining her? No-one else resigning from SU, is there?

Is this just one more occasion where we hold women to a higher standard than men, and use their past mistakes to silence them?

UptheHammers1 · 12/11/2014 11:39

^^^
Agree with this completely.

Charlie Webster put herself out there in the media as a spokesperson for the ‘anti’ Ched Evans campaign in regards to Sheffield United taking him back , I understand she has now apologised for the tweets but her argument against him now holds no weight at all.

LineRunner · 12/11/2014 11:41

But that argument is itself ad hominem, surely?

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 12/11/2014 11:42

However, where are the male voices joining her? No-one else resigning from SU, is there?

No, and that is why this whole thing is unfortunate, because people won't listen to her like they might have.

How can she say 'don't let the fact that Ched Evans is a rapist be brushed under the carpet - dont let people forget what he really is', when that is exactly what she did?

People don't like it when someone doesn't practise what they preach.
