Ched Evans Should NOT be allowed to train at Sheffield United !! Wales next?

DuelingFanjo · 11/11/2014 11:04

seriously?
I am absolutely appalled. I really really hope this doesn't mean he will ever play for Wales. I will definitely be taking part in some kind of protest if that happens.

A convicted mechanic is entitled to return to his job. However I think that most garages, if they knew the person involved showed no remorse and that people around him were harassing the victim with his tacit approval I think you would find that there wouldn't be many garage bosses who wanted him to work for them.

It's a funny one. We have two clubs in Sheffield, Wednesday and United. I support neither but live on the Wednesday side of town and I really like the supporters, it's a family atmosphere and always good natured, trouble only ever comes from away supporters. My husband supports one of their sworn enemies but he is allowed into the local home pubs on the day they play each other because he knows so many Wednesday fans and he's always welcome, there's no trouble. The atmosphere in pubs on match day is good. There are a lot more women and families around. How much that has to do with the aftermath of Hillsborough and a desire to stamp out macho culture I don't know.

However the atmosphere around Blade's matches is always a lot more menacing. I wouldn't feel comfortable going into one of their pubs on match day. There's more fighting, a lot less women and children at the matches. I ended up on the station with their fans after a match a couple of weeks ago and I wasn't quite so comfortable with the situation whereas I never mind being out even with my toddler on match day in Hillsborough (unless they're playing nutters like Millwall).

Personally I think it's symptomatic of that club's general ethos.

DF, see my post at 16:16

EveDallasRetd · 11/11/2014 16:26

Upthehammers, where did you watch the video?

If it is the one on the rapist Ched Evans website then there are two missing periods of time, quite obviously the video has been edited.

AnyFucker · 11/11/2014 16:27

sorry, cross posted

DuelingFanjo · 11/11/2014 16:28

oops, sorry - others have posted the links.

I really hope that there is a sustained campaign against this rapist being able to play professional football.

I believe there was also other CCTV footage which was from before she got in the taxi which the Ched Evans Website has not put up - possibly because it is damaging to their version of events.

On another thread someone made a very good point that in this era of social media, as a society, we are perfectly comfortable with the idea that someone could be sacked/disciplined/rejected by a potential employer, if that employer finds something on FB/Twitter that they do not like (and it doesn't have to be illegal either).

If someone loses their job/doesn't get an interview because a company looked them up on twitter and didn't like what they saw, no one bats an eyelid. The general view is'well you do have to be careful of what you put out there these days, you only have yourself to blame etc'. Fine.

And yet, a footballer rapes someone, and suddenly people are saying that not letting him back to his old job would be a huge social injustice.

Poor ickle rapist.

Whiskwarrior · 11/11/2014 16:46

Exactly. But don't you know he's done his time? All two and a half years of it. Wonder when his victim's 'time' will be up? Given that his friends and family are hell bent on smearing her name and proving her a liar, I'd say never.

So long as SUFC get some good goals though, eh? Hmm. Let's get our priorities straight here.

mojo17 · 11/11/2014 16:58

I am also sickened by this development
I sincerely urge anyone who can to protest in any way they feel they could
Tweet, Facebook, email Sheffield United and all sponsors

I will most certainly be ready for any physical presence protest if there is any rumour that he will play for Wales
There is a slim hope he won't as being picked to play for your country is an ambassadorial role and you need to be of good character so fingers crossed
But I am ready!
What do the workers at Sheffield United think about this I wonder
Will there be safeguards for him not to be able to be left alone
I hope their lone female working policies are strict enough and the women who work there feel safe

twofingerstoGideon · 11/11/2014 17:21

It is heartening, however, that every time there's a news story about convicted rapist Ched Evans, the Change Petition attracts more signatures.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/11/2014 17:48

I do think it's worth thinking for a moment about what a properly rehabilitated rapist Evans would be able to do. I think he could open up a powerful conversation about consent, our rape culture and male entitlement. But of course, that would mean he would have to say sorry (and mean it) and actually work against his privilege - the privilege that says a wealthy, fit, sportsman is entitled to sex without consent.

I think that would be an amazing thing. The only good thing to have come out of this case is people are talking about consent, they're talking about rape myths, they're catching up. Of course, all if this is scant comfort to the woman he raped.

But there you go rapist Ched - there is a route back to football for you. Are you brave enough to take it?

QueenTilly · 11/11/2014 17:53

The twitter point is an amazing one. Does anyone remember that teenage girl who lost her very public-facing job after someone checked her twitter feed and found some comments about Roma?

aermingers · 11/11/2014 18:02

Sheffield really are crap with this sort of thing. The council gave Spearmint Rhino a licence to open up right next to Sheffield Hallam Uni's student union. I'm not massively keen on those sort of places, but if they're going to be opened they should be in an appropriate area. There's a lot of evidence that incidents of sexual crime are much higher round these clubs and to open one right next to a student union is just irresponsible. Plus there are big problems with taxi licencing in the city. It's common knowledge thatthey are not just operated by the people who are licenced to do it but are kept running around the clock by the licencee letting it out to other people when they're not driving. I would say about 25% of the time I get a cab I get some sort of sexual harassment. Yet the council is ignoring this. And now Ched Evans. It's depressing Sheffield puts such a low priority on women's safety.

WafflerCumIroner · 11/11/2014 18:03

Rehabilitation requires that you admit you committed the offence.

There is no issue of hampering his rehabilitation here, none has even started until he admits he did it.

WafflerCumIroner · 11/11/2014 18:08

Don't get me wrong, I can see the need for rehabilitation, IF we are to let them out, people need to be able to move on once they have paid their debt to society.

What we have here, though, is the fact that the man has raped someone, as established in a court of law, and the fact that he says he has done nothing wrong.

Anybody that considers him to be rehabilitating or rehabilitates while that state exists, well they're endorsing both things as true.

PrincessOfChina · 11/11/2014 18:16

Here is the club statement.

www.sufc.co.uk/news/article/20141111-statement-2078346.aspx

It looks like complaints should also be directed to the PFA if you are so inclined.

To answer an earlier question, I don't believe that Ched Evans should have been convicted of rape. I do not believe there was sufficient evidence. However, it's fuck all to do with me as I wasn't on the jury. The jury concluded there was enough evidence. As such, he's a convicted rapist and I don't want him at my football club.

fuctifino · 11/11/2014 18:16

If she was too drunk to remember what had happened, how can she remember if she consented or not?

I think he should be allowed to resume his career. He's served his time, life goes on.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/11/2014 18:18

Because she was so drunk she couldn't consent. The police were called when she woke up alone in her own urine. She didn't accuse Ched Evans. He was found guilty on his own testimony.

AnyFucker · 11/11/2014 18:18

"Life goes on"

Not for the victim of the rapist Ched Evans it doesn't

AnyFucker · 11/11/2014 18:19

The rapist Ched Evans wasn't convicted on the answer his victim gave as to whether she consented or not. A person so drunk that they cannot remember is in no position to consent, ergo it is rape.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 11/11/2014 18:20

Fucking hell, that statement is a masterpiece of sit on the fence fuckeduppery. I hope their splinters get septic Angry

Bloody hell the sufc statement is so sterile
I would like to know which staff they consulted, any women likely to be in close and personal contact with a convicted rapist?

mojo17 · 11/11/2014 18:35

Regarding safety I wonder if any of the decision makers there would prove how confident and happy they are with this decision they will allow their daughters to be in the same 'party' with the convicted rapist ched Evans ?
