seriously?
I am absolutely appalled. I really really hope this doesn't mean he will ever play for Wales. I will definitely be taking part in some kind of protest if that happens.

MuddlingMackem I was thinking the same thing about Charlie Webster and googled her to find out her age.

She was nine years old when Tyson was convicted of raping Desiree Washington, and so probably wasn't very aware of it at the time. I can't see why it would be at the forefront of her mind now, she was a child when it happened, and many people seem to have forgotten about it.

I remember his conviction, but I couldn't have told you what year it was without also googling that, he was convicted in February 1992.

His victim also appears to still be being harassed by his supporters. The third link down on google when I looked is to a YouTube video titled "what they didn't tell you about Mike Tyson's rape…" and goes on in the description to promise "a deeper look into Mike's rape conviction" and calls his victim "a fucking slut". It was posted on YouTube in 2013 and lasts almost half an hour.

I haven't watched it. Just seeing that bit on google, third out of 23,300 results, was depressing enough.

And also. I have a question. Why was the other footballer not charged with rape. Because if she was too drunk to consent to Ched Evans then she was too drunk to consent to the other one. That's my opinion. They both should have been charged and that's why the whole thing is horrible and wrong and handled shockingly.

He was charged. He had the defence of 'reasonable belief' ie the girl went back to the hotel with him.

Let me give an example and see if you see the difference

You and your dh/dw/partner/bf/gf/one night stand - (you pick) come home, you are both drunk, you much more so than him, you are falling over drunk, but you have sex. The doors to your house are locked but your neighbour has a spare key.

Someone your (whichever you picked) knows knocks on the neighbour's door and persuades them to give you your spare key, he then lets himself in and asks (whichever you picked) if he can 'have a go' and then proceeds to stick his penis in you.

Do you think you have a right to complain? Do you think it is 'horrible' for him and he should be let off?

The two sponsors, DBL Logistics and John Holland Sales are talking a good talk regarding reevaluating their positions if the club decides to sign a convicted rapist. I hope they talk with their feet it it happens. And, indeed, the sponsors of any club who may choose to sign him.

There must be so many footballers of a similar calibre who haven't been convicted of rape. Why sign the rapist?

fuctifino · 13/11/2014 07:01

Michael Buerk Grin

Well if I go quiet for a few weeks, you'll know why Wink

Gideon, disbelieve my posts if you like, makes no odds to me but don't see why you have to be quite so condescending.
Doctor - neighbour, police - cycling buddy, teachers - work with them. Not that I should have to explain. I may be many things but a fantasist or liar I ain't Smile

MuttonCadet · 13/11/2014 07:45

I wouldn't want to work with a convicted rapist, I'm certain that my employers wouldn't put me in that position. I would hope that Sheffield United had a similar care for their female employees.

On the other hand my business has regularly used the United ground for hospitality, as do a number of my networking group.

I can ensure that my company stop using them for corporate hospitality, and I will be putting pressure on to the networking group.

I don't know what Sheffield Utd are thinking of! I am however heartened by 2 of the sponsors threatening to withdraw.

I think the Evans case just highlights the disgusting attitudes towards women and rape in football.

I'm sorry some of these links are very triggering but I just can't get over the behaviour of some footballers and the majority if these stories I hadn't even heard of.

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/235251/Football-players-locked-up-for-rape

www.stopdemand.org/afawcs0153418/CATID=4/ID=12/SID=587978889/UK-Footballers-

I think Titus Bramble's comments during his brothers rape trial give a good insight to what some footballers think of women.
www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2004109/Titus-Bramble-says-girls-footballers-hotels-want-sex-rape-trial.html.

The Evans case proves how much need there is for a campaign about educating the training ground to the terraces about what is rape and what is an acceptable to treat women.

I would love to see a high profile male football ambassador like Prince William, David Beckham or an ex player like Paul Scholes speak out against the players attitude of they're footballers they can do what they like. I say male as women who speak out against footballers are treated with such utter contempt.

Another thing that worries me about the Evans case is that his supporters seem to have "made an example" of the victim- this is what happens if you go to the police. I'm just scared it will put off future victims of rape by footballers reporting it.

Sorry for waffling I hope that makes sense

UptheHammers1 · 13/11/2014 09:34

Wigan Athletic sacked Marlon King the minute he was convicted for Sexual assault, very honourable thing to do, unfortunately the minute he was released there were three clubs waiting to sign him, he ended up at Coventry City , then Birmingham… before ending up and playing for SHEFFIELD UNITED… only the arrival of Nigel Clough, and more importantly a knee injury forced him out... Sheffield Utd originally rejected him, it was only because they were struggling for Goals at the bottom of the league they signed him.....

Alicelidl - Charlie Webster is a SPORTS presenter, the fact that she was nine when he raped someone is irrelevant, as a sports presenter on arguably the biggest sports news channel in the world she would have been well aware of his background.

I actually agree with Fuctifino - go into any pub in Wales or football ground, office, warehouse Etc… you will not find many people who believe he shouldn’t be allowed to continue his career.
Ched has to prove his fitness and desire is still there to play, it’s not a given that Sheffield Utd will ever give him a contract, but if they don’t, then you have to expect him to turn up somewhere, if a club is struggling at the bottom of a division, threatened with relegation then any morals they have will go straight out the window.

Ah, the beautiful game Hmm

You make this sound like it sound like this is some kind of natural inevitability, like the sun rising in the East or something.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 13/11/2014 09:59

In all the depressing comments I've read about this case - and there are literally thousands of them - that is the worse. That it is inevitable that a sports club will suspend all morals to sign a man who can kick goals.

FFS.

UptheHammers1 · 13/11/2014 10:08

You might not like what I am saying but unfortunately it's the truth

It is inevitable he will end up playing at a football league club somewhere....just look back over the past 20 years, you have had footballers sent to prison for Sexual Assault, death by Dangerous driving X2, Affray, Drink driving, ABH… all these people have gone back to professional football.

Do you honestly think Ched Evens will be treated differently.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 13/11/2014 10:12

Yes yes, I understand what ou are saying. But you are completely missing the point, which is that it doesn't have to be that way.

Viviennemary · 13/11/2014 10:16

It might be depressing to think that morals go out of the window when it comes to money in football. However, I think we can say that it is a truth universally acknowledged. Anyone who thinks differently is deluded. IMHO. But things may changbut it will take a long long time.

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 13/11/2014 10:17

Because watching people kick a ball around a field is worth more than taking a stand against violence towards women.

Do not want to live on this planet any more.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 13/11/2014 10:17

if a club is struggling at the bottom of a division, threatened with relegation then any morals they have will go straight out the window.

Bloody hell I hope not. That sounds like my local club. (bottom of the division, threatened with relegation). We are probably a bit too down-market for the lovely Natasha's liking though. Too far from her Daddy.

It really should not be an inevitable conclusion that he goes back into football.

UptheHammers1 · 13/11/2014 10:22

I know exactly what the point is but Football is about Money not Morals and what's necessarily right.

The Ched Evans case is not going to change that, so unfortunately for the time being, and certainly in the near future with more and more money being poured into football, nothing will change.

Ched Evans is a commodity that is sought after In the football world, he maybe one of the most vile human beings but as long as he can kick a ball into the back of a net, someone will sign him

ifyourehoppyandyouknowit · 13/11/2014 10:25

Ched Evans is a commodity and is worth more than women. That's what is comes down. Women are not worth as much money.

I just can't. This is so utterly depressing. It's 2014. Why are people still so awful?

TheGirlFromIpanema · 13/11/2014 10:30

I agree ifyour

Even on a MN thread the amount of whatabouttery and defence of a convicted rapist is astounding Shock

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 13/11/2014 10:36

Hammers you're a hammers/football fan (one presumes). Don't you see you have the power to change this? You have the power to make it NOT inevitable that a convicted rapist plays for your team. You don't need to shrug your shoulders and say 'it's inevitable, it's football' you can say 'this is MY game, MY money and MY season ticket and if you do this, I will no longer support you.'

What do you want for your daughters? Rape culture or something different?

AliceLidl · 13/11/2014 10:45

It's awful to say it, but I think Hammers1 is right.

Someone will sign him. It may be SUFC, it may be another club so desperate to cling onto their divisional status and not get relegated that they would sign anybody who could keep them there, rapist or not.

It's why it's so important to keep speaking out about the rapist Evans, and other like him, Tyson included.

I was shocked by the existence of that video I found last night. Tyson was convicted in 1992 and a video calling his victim "a fucking slut" was posted on YouTube in 2013. Twenty-one years later and people are still hounding her and making excuses for him.

It's no wonder victims don't come forward. But it's why it's not possible to say "he's served his time, let him get on with his life." That happened with Tyson, to the point where people are forgetting about his conviction, but not showing the same courtesy to his victim.

It's why people need to speak out against Evans, and anyone else like him, convicted of rape, returned as normal to a high profile career in the public eye.

MissPenelopeLumawoo2 · 13/11/2014 10:52

Admittedly I don't know how football signings work. But- Ched is not under contract to SU at the moment, so is a free agent. If he is such a commodity, why have all these other clubs not made him an offer? Do they have to wait until SU has definitely said 'No' before they do that? His statement seemed like a job advert- an appeal to any club interested in signing him- so why is he still unemployed, this valuable commodity in this game without morals?

DuelingFanjo · 13/11/2014 10:56

I am losing the will to live

Fucking Allison Pearson. Having "spent two grim days reading reading the Ched Evans Website about everything the former Welsh international

" I have come to three conclusions. The first is that the verdict of the jury was inconsistent and quite possibly unsafe. The second is that the football pitches of England would be half-empty this Saturday afternoon if you removed every player who has done what Evans did. (And so would many of the clubs and pubs.)
The third conclusion is probably the most troubling. We live in an era where relationships among the young have changed beyond recognition. Casual hook-ups and the exchange of sexual favours are the norm. Even “nice” girls allow themselves to be used like inflatable dolls. (If confident enough, they can use men like playthings in return.) In such a free-for-all, what is meant by “consensual sex” becomes more and more blurred."

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/11/2014 10:58

Presumably he needs some time to train and prove he can still play. Perhaps by allowing him to train Sheffield are trying to dodge the issue - either he'll be rubbish now and they'll be able to say 'sorry, his football wasn't up to scratch' or someone else will sign him? And it's backfired because they thought they'd be ok because they're not actually signing him, but the anti-Ched people are saying 'not good enough, sorry, by allowing him to train you're implying you still support him'?
Just a guess - I know nothing about how all this stuff works.
