I know there is pedants corner but I was wondering if there was anywhere where like minded people who want to complain about words like amazeballs, and other grumpy things can go and be grumpy without being told to get a life?

And people crying because someone's wedding is on their birthday. I mean, good God, does everyone go, "Oooh, musn't plan a wedding for July 2017 because MadPoster is 37 then."

BrendaBlackhead · 11/11/2014 12:21

I would hope that no one would rise to the bait and ignore + report.

Couldn't agree more with the 'Elf on the Bleedin' Shelf' stuff -- where did that come from... wouldn't have happened in my young day (and nor would writing Xmas, as that was 'being lazy' Grin)

ginslinger · 11/11/2014 13:40

I was in such a bad mood one year about 'elf on a shelf' that I almost took it to AIBU but then I realised I would be blistered for life from the flaming that I'd get.

but elf on a shelf? Really?

Pipbin · 11/11/2014 13:42

What is elf on a shelf?

OP posts:
ginslinger · 11/11/2014 13:46

It's an elf that appears at the start of December and tells mummy and daddy if DCs are being good or bad and I think it gives little treats and does things.

I actually realise that I'm being annoyed by something that I know nothing about but the concept is enough to annoy me. Perhaps I should book myself into a quiet home.

MrsHathaway · 11/11/2014 14:02

If there existed And Another Thing I could probably hide AIBU.

I love it. And I'm usually a "ooh but let's try to see both sides" wanker coward poster.

Today I am grumpy about having to take DS to swimming because it's boiling and boring.

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 14:18

Lemon, I totally understand what you are saying, but I think it would have to rely on us (with the cooperation of MN) to point out where they're posting, then ignore.

Beyond, I see your point BUT if we ALL resolve not to rise to those threads and report, they'll get deleted, as they do now.

Also, I think it would be good for it to be an opt in board so it doesn't appear in the active threads list and all the better if MN would make non google able like the unmentioned board.

Agree With Me or Fuck Off
Is my favourite so far, but I'm not sure MN will go along with that?, how about Agree With Me or Start You Own Thread as a compromise?

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 14:19

MrsHathaway. That's my Friday afternoon 'treat' Hmm

ChippingInAutumnLover · 11/11/2014 14:23

You know what!? :(

It's just dawned on me, more precisely anyway, that what we are trying to get to, is what _Chat used to be like and why AIBU was created, to divert the 'debate' away from it.

Maybe what we need to do is reclaim_Chat???

Yes, exactly what chat was except chat self destructs after 3 months

Thank you BogStandard - I'm pleased to see my prejudices were deserved

Can we put hampers in Christmas room 101 too? Maybe the elves on shelves could drown under a sea of them?

Hampers as gifts, Christmas eve hampers, even the bastard word 'hampers' is grump inducing.

I get grumpy about the mountains of cheap tat, but I also get grumpy about the comedically high priced 'I saw you coming' luxury products that are popular on here too.

Things like Jo Malone, Diptyeuqe (I know that's wrong but you know what I mean) and cashmere socks that cost ten times more than 'normal' stuff. I know they're nice, but are they really worth so much more than standard products?

ArgyMargy · 11/11/2014 17:27

Oooh, if this is a Room 101 approaching Christmas then I'm in! Anything mentioning Christmas before December. Anything regarding Christmas Eve (unless you're German) apart from Midnight Mass. Anything dreamt up by marketeers e.g. Christmas Eve Hampers, Mince Pie Cookies, Jesus Baby Showers.

But not House Lights - I just love 'em!

MehsMum · 11/11/2014 17:32

And I want to be able to say O Levels were harder and back in my day you had to do unseen translations and what's this holiday French crap you're doing instead of learning the pluperfect and in the 80s the radio was much better background revision than all that awful noise going on today. How can you concentrate when those idiotic djs speak so fast and not even in the Queen's English? No, you should have heard Simon Bates and Gary Davies.

Brenda, are you sure you're not me? O Levels were harder, I had to learn almost all of the translation of Aeneid IV by heart AND Pliny AND Catullus, and in French we had to write a whole story off pat from a cartoon strip we'd never even seen before and the music on Radio 1 became crap at the end of the 80s and has stayed crap since and why can't the DJs speak properly these days

As for Elf on a Shelf A Christmas Tradition? Not in this house.

More seriously, if MNHQ gives us this topic pleasepleaseplease I think objectionable posts/threads can be reported by eagle-eyed grumpy old women. Given how stroppy we are, I don't think noxious views would have a long life-span.

It hadn't occurred to me that twats could use it to spout crap - but then if we self moderate it (by not posting if you don't agree as per spirit of board and reporting the thread for deletion) - or in other words, use MN as you're sodding well meant to - then would that be an issue? Ignore and report the arseholes and agree with the grumps.

And O Levels were definitely harder. I was second year GCSE - it was made easier to get good results so the change could be seen to be a good one. Bollocks was it, that was the start of dumbing down UK education. I had A level maths questions that my sister had had on her O level paper 7 years previously.

Elf on the Shelf, Christmas duvet sets and Christmas Eve hampers with bubbles / PJs / etc have not, thank heaven, made it to NZ yet. Turning your house into an enormous flashing eyesore has, unfortunately. Let's distract traffic, cause major hold ups on the road and use even more fossil fuel generated electricity in the name of havinv one more light than your neighbour. The house down the road does it, people drive from all over town to stand outside and look at it and the inconsiderate parking blocks the road so when I need to get out (on call for emergency surgery etc) I can't and have to sit in the road beeping to be let through. Grrrr.
