To hate Sunday roast dinners.....

Toastandstrawberryjam · 09/11/2014 15:03

It's not Sunday big family dinners I hate. It's specifically roast dinners.

Firstly every single time we have one (or I eat one somewhere else) I'm ill afterwards. I have no idea what it is but some part of it sets off an upset stomach followed by days of cramps. I'm ok if I just eat the meat and a few veggies but frankly that's not the most exciting of dinners.

Then there's the stipulation of "roast rules", always in the evening not at lunchtime. Invariably being everybody is tired and the DC barely eat anything. Then there's the "at least 2 types of potato" rule (but preferably 3 - roast, new, mash) and "at least 5 types of veg". It's such a palaver.

Last week I cooked roast chicken with crunchy baked potatoes, ratatouille and nice bread - that to me was perfect. Low fuss, minimal clean up. But it's not classed as a proper roast here :(

I love Sunday roast, we have one most weeks but I never follow your "roast rules" Today we've had roast beef, Yorkshire pud, roast potatoes, mashed swede, carrots and sprouts. We eat between 1 and 2pm and quite often I do two veg rather than three. It's the one day that I do pudding too so it feels like an occasion.

Toastandstrawberryjam · 09/11/2014 15:21

He is cooking it now after I refused. But OMG the drama of it, it's now like having Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen.

Fuck that, OP. 1 type of potato, 1 type of veg, yorkies and meat. Done.

Mrsgrumble · 09/11/2014 15:21

Oh my goodness!!

No way. We eat steak and mash, few veg, pepper sauce

Or salmon and veg and potato

Or roas chicken stuffing etc

Three potato types and six veg or he's huffing!! Grrrrr.

OOAOML · 09/11/2014 15:22

Can you not break free from these 'rules'? Although I confess I am ignorant of all these roast dinner traditions as we don't do them. The nearest we come to it is Christmas.

skylark2 · 09/11/2014 15:23

"He wanted....Carrots, parsnips, Brussels, cabbage, peas, cauliflower cheese. So six."

I'm sure "he" is capable of peeling and chopping veg. It's not a job which requires breasts.

I'd simply say no to cauliflower cheese as a part of a roast meal.

"Roast dinner" is a description of how the meat and potatoes are cooked, it's not a requirement for every component to be cooked in a different fancy way!

MissMogwi · 09/11/2014 15:24

I love a Sunday roast, it's my favourite meal.

However if you're the one making it, YOU decide on the types of potatoes and veg. Rules my arse!

It must take hours to make 3 types of spuds and then mess about cooking the rest of it.

guineapig1 · 09/11/2014 15:25

3 types of potatoes is pure madness!! We normally do mash or new potatoes and then:
One complicated veg Smile- cauliflower cheese / braised red cabbage etc;
One bung in with the meat veg:- roast pots or roast parsnips
Two easy veg: carrots/peas/broccoli/swede.

Yorkies/stuffings only made on special occasions. Anything else is a bonus!!

MsVestibule · 09/11/2014 15:25

Mmm:

  • beautifully cooked chicken (has to be cooked in a roasting bag, keeps it really moist)
  • mashed potatoes, roast potatoes
  • sprouts and carrots boiled in a small amount of water
  • Paxo stuffing
  • Yorkshire puddings
  • gravy made with Bisto powder (not granules), the juices from the chicken and some of the veg water

But I only make it because I love it too! If it was too much of a faff and made me ill, I certainly wouldn't bother.

ClawHandsIfYouBelieveInFreaks · 09/11/2014 15:26

Our roasts are always chicken, roast potatoes and three vegetables such as roast carrots, green beans and broccoli. That's it! Your DHs idea of a roast sounds like a nightmare!

Chippednailvarnish · 09/11/2014 15:26

Give him this and if he doesn't like it tell him to fuck off.

grocklebox · 09/11/2014 15:27

It's not sunday roast dinners you should be complaining about. IT's the fact that you're married to a bossy twat.
Focus on your real problem.

BackforGood · 09/11/2014 15:28

As others have said, it's not the issue with a roast dinner, it's an issue with these daft 'rules'.
Why on earth would anyone continue to eat something that makes them ill for days ? Confused
Surely anybody in their right mind would work out what it is they are reacting to, and then not eat it Hmm

We all like a roast dinner in our house, but then we don't follow these daft rules.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 09/11/2014 15:29

6 veg???

No is a complete sentence.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 09/11/2014 15:29

Glad to hear it!

We tend to have roast chicken with roast potatoes, roast carrots, sweet potato mash, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, sweetcorn and sprouts (for DH). Then Yorkshire puds and stuffing.
Might sound a lot but it only takes about 20 minutes prep time then easy to cook.

PersonalClown · 09/11/2014 15:29

Fuck that for a game of soldiers!

DP does the cooking but it is a maximum of 5 veg IF we are so inclined. Peas and carrots as standard, broccoli and cauliflower maybe if Toad is in the mood and parsnips if DP feels like them.

Roast potatoes only.
Yorkies, stuffing, meat and gravy.

Any time, any day is good for a Roast.

WallBox · 09/11/2014 15:30

MsVestibule I thought it was just me with the Bisto powder.

I cook my chicken in a halogen oven, so easy and stunningly good.

Mintyy · 09/11/2014 15:30

Your dh seems to be under the illusion that you run a restaurant of some sort where he not only gets a labour-intensive meal served to him when he likes, but he also gets to choose what's on the menu!

And now he's making a drama about cooking one meal?

He sounds like such a catch .

Mintyy · 09/11/2014 15:32

We're having roast chicken, chipolatas (just because I had a few in the freezer to use up), roast potatoes, roast parsnips (frozen), broccoli, peas and maybe carrots, gravy and paxo stuffing.

Dh is cooking. It is no effort at all once the veg are peeled.

I will make the gravy.

carlsonrichards · 09/11/2014 15:32

Why are you putting up with this? He wants a shitty roast dinner, HE cooks it AND he cleans it all up.

Sounds bland and boring.

LittleprincessinGOLDrocks · 09/11/2014 15:33

Send him here for Cauliflower cheese in future. DH likes cauliflower cheese and happily eats this. No one has time to cook that from scratch whilst doing a full roast surely?!

aintnothinbutagstring · 09/11/2014 15:35

Not surprised you'd have a dodgy tummy after eating 6 types of veg in one meal! Your DH sounds a bit high maintenance, I'd put him in charge of sunday roast and cleaning up afterwards if he's so particular and has 'rules'.

Luckily we don't really do roasts here, my dh is not british, I'll probably do a rice or pasta dish later. I do like them but often find the prep time is not worth the end result and I only really like a lambs leg which is expensive. A roast tends to be xmas/new year/easter here.

Anyway, I think the issue here is your dh, not the sunday roast.

PrimalLass · 09/11/2014 15:35

He is being very greedy.

Why do you do it? Just say no.

Lucyccfc · 09/11/2014 15:36

We don't follow any particular rules when it comes to a Sunday roast, except that it's always early evening rather than lunch time. Could never eat a big meal early on the day.

There's only the 2 of us, so I tend to do chicken legs or lamb steaks, but we always have roast potatoes and Yorkshire pudding. I normally do cauli, broccoli, carrots, roast parsnip, leeks, green beans and peas, as well as sweet corn pancakes for my DS. I love my veg and as there are only 2 of us, it never takes long to chop and prepare it and it all goes in the steamer.

We do love a roast dinner.

If I had a house full of people I may cut that down to 3 or 4 veg.

BuilderMammy · 09/11/2014 15:37

Good grief. A normal sunday dinner here involves meat, roast potatoes and one vegetable, plus gravy or sauce of some sort. If I'm feeling really energetic there'll be stuffing.

Two types of spud of veg only happens at christmas, and I've never done more than two of either (though on two-spud-and-two-veg occasions there'll also be two stuffings).

He has no right to make demands like that, or to make a fuss about doing it himself. He's being an arse.
