to never sing along with God Save the Queen?

The fact I never sing it comes up now and again and today was one of those times, at our local remembrance day parade. Right at the end the minister said 'and we'll now sing our national anthem'. I can't recall God Save the Queen being part of it,before but regardless I just stand and don't song. I don't make a big thing of it, I just don't sing.

Simiraly the Edinburgh tattoo it was sang, I stood alongside everyone but didn't sing.

I don't make a big fuss and thankfully I'm not at any events where it's sang

Dh says it's rude. I say she's not my queen, I wish her no ill but I will not sing that song.

I never sing it I know I rather have a national anthem about our country and people

sadly she is my queen I have no choice in that matter Angry and we live in a democracy Hmm

Bunbaker · 09/11/2014 13:58

Our national anthem is so universally unpopular perhaps we should change it when the queen's successor comes to the throne.

This sums up perfectly how I feel about you not singing God Save the Queen OP.

NinjaLeprechaun · 09/11/2014 14:07

I remember going to a baseball game and being a bit shock at grown men crying. I was about 11 at the time but it has stuck with me.
I can get choked up when I hear O Canada before a hockey game despite not being Canadian, because my favourite team is. Never underestimate the emotion weirdness of sports fans. Wink

FreudiansSlipper · 09/11/2014 14:13

that is not to say I am not patriotic

i was moved many times and felt incredibly proud to be British during the Olympics (and many other times) but I would still prefer to have a different national anthem

Puzzledandpissedoff · 09/11/2014 14:17

I don't mind singing it for the Queen, but anyone who thinks I'll do so for her eldest son has another think coming Hmm

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 14:19

The queens involvement with government is nothing more than pomp and circumstance, take her out of the equation and it would function the same.

Of course I know what the first line of Jerusalem is Aessedai
!
it's a question, and if it were to be taken literally my answer would be 'no'
(and presumable most Christians would say no also)
But, the sentiment of the song IMO is about recognising what's wrong with the world and resolving to put it right, which I think there's a worthy tradition of in this country and is one of the things that does make me feel patriotic. As opposed to the royal family (no ill will to them btw)
fascinating stuff about Jerusalem

BackOnlyBriefly · 09/11/2014 14:20

Well I don't believe in god and don't approve of the monarchy so to me it's a bit daft. I might stand up to be polite to the people I was with, but that's my limit.

She is the queen of the country I live in yes, but the guy on the corner is the drug dealer for the road I live in. I have no interest in either.

maras2 · 09/11/2014 14:23

I'm an old gimmer and a bit meh about the National Anthem.Sing, don't sing who GAF;However the tune is so boring especially when compared things like Le Marseillaise etc.So I'd like to nominate Barwick Green < The Archers music >as a new National Anthem tune.Oh ... and make your own words up. Grin

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 14:24

Ah but kimber you went to all the effort of reading the thread, commenting and finding a nifty little video illustrate just how little you care!

OP posts:
KimberBentonIsGoingSolo · 09/11/2014 14:28

No its a video I'm very familiar with Smile so no effort at all.

OP sing it or don't sing it. Its your choice and no one else cares.

And by the way she is your Queen regardless of anything you say.

cloutiedumpling · 09/11/2014 14:29

The national anthem is racist. I do sing it, but only because I respect the Queen. It is time that someone wrote a new national anthem.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 14:30

And you're still here, not caring, how lovely!

MrsBungle · 09/11/2014 14:41

I love a good vibrant national anthem! I hate god save the queen though and never sing it. I don't stand either. I would love a new anthem about the people rather than about the queen or god. I always sing flower of Scotland, now that's an anthem.

Fluffyears · 09/11/2014 14:47

It's a racist dirge so I refuse to recognise it as my national anthem. Should we not have a new one and each country can also have their own song. People from other countries havd asked why the ENGLAND football team use the BRITISH natinal anthem and not their own anthem and are usually surprised that their is not a seperate one for a seperate team. They are a really using an anthem that represents countries not involved in their team. I do respect the queen but I will not sing a song that encourages killing me and my family of 'rebellious scots'. Time for a full new anthem that is uplifting and victorious for the UNITED Kingdom.

Fluffyears · 09/11/2014 14:49

Ach fat fingers excuse spelling Nd grammar there...damn you I-phone!

WalkingInMemphis · 09/11/2014 14:50

This is what a national anthem should be IMO (English translation of Welsh NA). Uplifting, beautiful and passionate about your Country. GSTQ just doesn't compare in my (biased) opinion.

This land of my fathers is dear to me
Land of poets and singers, and people of stature
Her brave warriors, fine patriots
Shed their blood for freedom

Chorus:
Land! Land! I am true to my land!
As long as the sea serves as a wall for this pure, dear land
May the language endure for ever.

Old land of the mountains, paradise of the poets,
Every valley, every cliff a beauty guards;
Through love of my country, enchanting voices will be
Her streams and rivers to me.

Chorus

Though the enemy have trampled my country underfoot,
The old language of the Welsh knows no retreat,
The spirit is not hindered by the treacherous hand
Nor silenced the sweet harp of my land.

Behoove · 09/11/2014 14:50

Flower of Scotland is an utter embarrassment to me. I'm old enough to remember the Corries and that's a song which should have remained as an obscure folk ditty. It's anti English, parochial and utterly cringe inducing. Scotland is a supposed modern, inclusive, forward thinking nation.

Can you tell I don't like it?

Aeroflotgirl · 09/11/2014 14:52

Op don't sing, but you don't have to publically announce it like its something to be pleased about, especially on remembers cd Sunday.

ConkerTime · 09/11/2014 14:53

Flower of Scotland makes me cringe too.

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 14:53

Yeah England really need to sort themselves a national anthem and use it!

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 09/11/2014 14:53

Given that most people only know the words to the first verse I think most people wouldn't find the words racist. I had to google the rest of it to find the racist part, and agree the words about crushing the rebellious Scots aren't acceptable. They are of their time - mid 18th century.

I think it is time to put our national anthem into room 101 and choose a new one that is relevant to today's Great Britain (or England)

ConkerTime · 09/11/2014 14:54

I think the public announcement is the point though..

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 09/11/2014 14:58

What public announcement?
