to never sing along with God Save the Queen?

The fact I never sing it comes up now and again and today was one of those times, at our local remembrance day parade. Right at the end the minister said 'and we'll now sing our national anthem'. I can't recall God Save the Queen being part of it,before but regardless I just stand and don't song. I don't make a big thing of it, I just don't sing.

Simiraly the Edinburgh tattoo it was sang, I stood alongside everyone but didn't sing.

I don't make a big fuss and thankfully I'm not at any events where it's sang

Dh says it's rude. I say she's not my queen, I wish her no ill but I will not sing that song.

It is not the concept of a NATIONAL anthem that concerns me, I can see a point in patriotism on occasion, but GSTQ is a personal anthem revering ONE person who has inherited that position.

However much that one person maybe admired and however many people do the admiring it does not send the right message to the nation as a whole or to the rest of the world.

Time for a rethink methinks.

OOAOML · 11/11/2014 15:39

I don't bow or scrape. I went to a church service where I sang several songs (hymns) including GSTQ. I stood and sat at the appropriate times, I was quiet during prayers even although I didn't close my eyes and actually pray (because I'm not religious). I saw it as joining in with cultural norms, not being subjugated. If you asked me if the queen was my queen, then I would say yes becuase that is factually correct, even although it has very little relevance to my daily life.

fatlazymummy · 11/11/2014 15:43

See, I just think of her as 'the' queen rather than 'my' queen. We just happen to live in the same country.
I don't think of David Cameron as 'my' PM either, just 'the' PM. Same sort of thing to me.

FannyFifer · 11/11/2014 16:40

Will it change to god save the king when the queen dies?

GingerCuddleMonster · 11/11/2014 16:45

yesfanny when she dies they will walk in to the next room and all say god save the king directed at Charles too.

I need the words printed infront of me to sing it, as does dp who serves her forces Shock haha I'll just stick to the one I know....

GWLAD, GWLAD....Grin

rumbleinthrjungle · 11/11/2014 16:51

Land of Hope and Glory is out, it has reference to God in it. Jerusalem is out, it has reference to God in it. Rule Brittania is probably dodgy, mention of slaves, still going to lead to people's personal political standpoints outweighing moments of national unity/patriotism. I think we're probably down to the Teletubbies theme tune. Hmm

fatlazymummy · 11/11/2014 17:15

rumble perhaps it's time to write a new one then.

Poopooweewee · 11/11/2014 17:19

Punkrocker yeah I'm 40 years old and 'showing off' Grin..... to a bunch of people who don't know me and never will Confused

OOAOML · 11/11/2014 18:19

Good job King and Queen are similar length words, it would be far too confusing to have to switch between two completely different anthems Wink

I was surprised one year when they gave out hymn books at the service to see that the words are actually printed in there. So when the day comes, either they have to reprint them all, or the minister has to remind people to say King instead of Queen. Although I mainly only go to remembrance services and sometimes take DD to a Thinking Day one with Guides, so I'm guessing most regular services don't have the anthem, certainly didn't when I was growing up.

I really like the old Soviet anthem. And the German one is good (although I was a bit shocked when a sports commentator referred to it by the old name of Deutschland Uber Alles - apparently the first verse was dropped along with the name). Also the French. Although I don't have a problem with the queen, I do agree that GSTQ is a dirge.

SuperScrimper · 11/11/2014 18:25

I don't sing God Save The Queen. I don't think it, so why would I sing it?

I actually find it really offensive to be asked to sing that at Remembrance Day, we are honouring people who gave up their lives. We should not be praying to God to preserve the life of one, non elected, extremely over privileged person above everyone else.

SilentAllTheseYears · 11/11/2014 18:29

We should not be praying to God to preserve the life of one, non elected, extremely over privileged person above everyone else

^^^ precisely my view.

dotdotdotmustdash · 11/11/2014 23:45

I'm a Scottish atheist and I don't sing GSTQ but I do acknowledge that we have a Queen because, obviously, we have a Queen :-) I accept that I am a subject and I would be happy for her see out her life as the Queen but after her I would like the succession to quietly come to an end the royal family to become independently wealthy commoners. I'm pretty sure the current royal family wouldn't be too upset by that either.

Moln · 12/11/2014 00:11

OP you're just like the queen - she doesn't sing it either!

sconequeen · 12/11/2014 03:05

I don't sing GSTQ. I don't stand up for it either. As a Scot, I do not recognise it as my national anthem because it carries so much negative cultural baggage for me, including the now unsung verse about crushing rebellious Scots.

But I also think that the English deserve something far better as their national anthem.

GSTQ's sentiments are an anachronism as is the Queen IMO (regardless of how much personal respect I have for the dedication she has shown to her role over the years). And, as has been said above, why should we be asking the Almighty to save one person over all the others in this country?

To me, the words of GTSQ smack of wanting to shore up the British establishment, regardless of its merits, and of keeping the plebs in their place. The words call for unswerving, unthinking loyalty to a system based on inequality and inherited privilege.

Surely the rallying cry for a country should be something a bit more ambitious, more inspirational and more rousing than GSTQ? It is a mystery to me why anyone would want to have GSTQ as their national anthem.

OOAOML · 12/11/2014 07:55

I don't recognise Flower of Scotland as mine (although I think that is more a default anthem than official) as I can't really stand up and sing about being a nation again.

I hadn't realised people analysed the words of GSTQ so much though. It is just something I hear very rarely, and maybe sing two verses of once a year.

But agree it is not very rousing. I much prefer Land of Hope and Glory, but I haven't done an indepth analysis of the words so doubtless there will be plenty in there to offend people as well.

If it's "just a song", then surely there's no issue if people choose not to sing it.

Paleodad · 12/11/2014 09:26

i don't stand, don't sing.
TBH, the whole concept of patriotism/nationalism leaves me cold and belongs in the dustbin of history, along with so many other Victorian/19th century 'nation state' ideologies.
I don't 'love my country'. However, i do love my community and the people that make it, and would fight to protect it/them. I have utmost respect for all those that fought and died (including my own relatives) to give us the security and freedoms we have now.
As for the monarchy, the whole concept is morally and financially corrupt.
And FWIW, i'm not Scottish or Welsh (Blackcountry through and through!)
