to be disappointed that Cheryl Cole is now the most successful british female musician of all time

Looks like this weekend she alone will hold the record for most British female number one singles. I like her but she just has people pick songs for her and records an album in a week.

Currently the record is shared with Rita ora and geri halliwell. Ora has an amazing voice. Halliwell wrote lots of her songs and even signs many of them so her deaf fans can enjoy them.

My grandfather 'worked hard' down the mines.

Yes, there is a view with some that only physical backbreaking grinding work is the only type that can be described as work. I don't hold that view.

squoosh · 06/11/2014 16:20

But she's not being slagged off for daring to be successful, she's being slagged off for being only 'moderately' talented whilst apparently being Britain's most successful female singer.

I suppose the fact the Geri Halliwell is in second place says all we need to know about music industry statistics.

I have no problem with people being as successful as they can be in whatever field they choose to be successful in. That doesn't mean I believe their success has much merit or is the result of hard work.

IsabellaPong · 06/11/2014 16:26

I think her PR people are more responsible for her success than she is.

Well why is she being slagged of at all, surely it should be the record buying/TV viewing pubic you're taking issue with.

I agree, she must have a great team behind her, but that same team has probably failed to make other X Factor winners anything like as successful, Cheryl deserves some of the credit.

ps I'm not the Cheryl Cole fan club Grin

hudyerwheesht · 06/11/2014 16:36

Agree with everything squoosh said.

Neverbuyheliumbalonz · 06/11/2014 16:36

Cheryl Cole is living proof that you can, indeed, polish a turd.

I am still strangely drawn to her though

squoosh · 06/11/2014 16:36

You've never slagged off any rubbish band or singer? I do it all the time. I see it as my duty as a music fan.

And I do take issue with her fans but lacking the will or resources to address every one of her record buying fans I think expressing my bafflement on a MN thread will suffice for now.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 06/11/2014 16:43

She has charisma, works hard (she does work hard, as in she puts in the hours, travels constantly and has to be 'on brand' all the time, has to spend hours on her looks, workouts etc) and has managed to turn a small amount of talent into a rich and rewarding career. I have no beef with that.

I just don't think she's a musician and it irks that somehow she has managed to claim this title when you have people like Kate Bush, Annie Lennox, Florence Welch, Chrissie Hynde, Dusty Springfield, hell I'll even put Ellie Goulding in there and I don't even like Ellie Goulding!...

IsabellaPong · 06/11/2014 16:45

She wasn't an X factor winner so not sure why her PR team have failed there.

You see the slips every now and again where she forgets her script and shows her real self. You see it pre solo career on behind the scenes girls aloud stuff. Without the PR and the convenient Simon Cowell situation, she'd have vanished.

Yes, I once watched one of those fly on the wall documentaries about Girls Aloud when they were at their very peak really. She came across as an absolute fucking dickhead, while the others all seemed quite nice.

They were in Spain and their manager had sorted an excursion for them to do a bit of sightseeing - she moaned the whole time about how it was really boring etc while the others seemed to enjoy it. There was also some incident where she was furious that Nadine had got the best outfit for some TV appearance. The others didn't call her out on any of the strops, they just seemed quite used to it.

Add to that the umm, 'unfortunate' toilet incident and i think that the whole, 'luffly national treasure' thing is total bollocks. Which I have rather fallen for, I can't help but watch her!

paisley256 · 06/11/2014 17:43

Lovely to look at but hardly in the same league as Amy Winehouse.

noddyholder · 06/11/2014 17:57

Its all about her looks

dustarr73 · 06/11/2014 18:10

No im not her pa or anything. There are plenty of singers out there that are crap as well.Who cant sing well at all,its all a brand.Madonna being one that springs to mind.Shes not teh greatest singer but sometimes what these people have is something extra. And they use it to their advantage, there is nothing wrong wiht that at all.

CuriouSir · 06/11/2014 18:33

Why disappointed? Good luck to her

Gruntfuttock · 06/11/2014 18:33

"Paula Cartney had a criminal record too."

I didn't even think she was a musician. Confused She is what you would call a manufactured star.

Pancakeflipper · 06/11/2014 18:44

Well someone is buying the stuff to make her so high profile...
But it ain't me. To me it is forgettable pop.

Bunbaker · 06/11/2014 18:59

"It's safe to say whose musical legacy will be listened to and spoken of 30 years from now"

Exactly squoosh OH and I recorded the Kate Bush programmes recently and they were fabulous.

What about Annie Lennox?
Adele?
Amy Winehouse?
The late Kirsty MacColl?
Tracey Chapman?
Joan Armatrading?
Sinead O'Connor? Surely "Nothing Compares To U" must be the best song ever?
Sade? What a voice!
Kate Rusby?

All far more talented than Cheryl (I can't remember her surname these days)

anonacfr · 06/11/2014 19:12

Paula Cartney Grin

dustarr73 · 07/11/2014 12:05

Sinead O Connor is not british though.

Gruntfuttock · 07/11/2014 12:21

anonacfr "Paula Cartney Grin"

That name does ring a bell. I have an idea that she was in a band ages ago, with Georgia Harrison and Joan Lennon.

ohmymimi · 07/11/2014 12:38

She's now known as Chryl Autotune Vocalizer in the ohmy household, now she's gone double barreled.Smile

GreatAuntDinah · 07/11/2014 12:45

Wot Dojo said. You only need to sell, like, twenty-three albums to be number one these days.
