To want fireworks banned from public sale?

I'm not a killjoy, but I'm sitting here with a fucking terrified dog. He is not a dog who scares easily, but it sounds like the Blitz out there tonight I've got the TV turned up loud to drown out the sound, I've shut the curtains and he is still cowering in the corner. Not even the lure of a treat is bringing him out.

It's the same every year, selfish fuckers buying bombs to set off in their gardens with little consideration for neighbours with pets and young children. At least pets have shelter from it though, farm animals and wildlife don't.

In fact I hate the entire concept of bonfire night really. Burning a catholic on a bonfire. How is that still acceptable in 2014.

Just go to a public display and stop inflicting this noise on your neighbours please!

Chinese New Year and Diwali is full of fireworks as well.... It happens lots

I agree with you, not just from the 'pissing animals and babies off' aspect but round here they are really abused. People have been getting them thrown at their houses, through letter boxes, at cars and also loads of injuries cropping up. They're just too dangerous imo.

I feel the same way. My ds2 is 3.5 years old and was absolutely terrified last year. We had weeks of him being too afraid to sleep, bring scared of the toilet bring flushed and the washing machine being on when he was in bed, it wasn't the public displays, as you say OP, it's the selfish people who feel the need to buy their own fireworks and let the off on their gardens. It wouldn't be so bad if they them off at a early time, but last year it was 9 pm and gone. This year ds2 is still quite afraid of them so I'm hoping there won't be too many people having their own little displays this year.

YANBU. I was utterly shocked when I came to the UK from Australia where they're illegal, more due to the fire risk in a bush-fire prone country, but also because of the horrific injuries. I can't believe they're allowed to be let off in such confined areas. When I lived in the countryside they weren't nearly so bad so the livestock weren't too bothered by it.

The DCs are also fucking awful sleepers so I want to hurl obscenities out the window as one invariably goes off just as I've finally got them to sleep and they wake up crying

I have long wondered why fireworks are on sale to the general public when they are, essentially, explosives. They are dangerous! I know there are people who use them sensibly but there are lots who don't. Sometimes people do use them sensibly but they just malfunction and the results can be devastating. My ex's cousin was killed by a firework that exploded in his face (it malfunctioned) in front of his 3 :(

YANBU because they are so bloody dangerous. Year in, year out, children and adults horribly burnt.

No need to stress Guy's religion when we burn him in effigy, and that part does not bother me. Just the fireworks. Licenced displays only.

YANBU. Thinking about it, it's quite weird that something so potentially dangerous or damaging is so easily available to by and set off at home.

I love fireworks, but only big professional displays.

I'm with Worra I wouldn't ban them but I would only let people buy normal ones not the huge bangy ones you get these days

Our neighbours decided to have a firework display at 11 o'clock the other night, the fuckers. I really wish they were limited to well organised public displays.

I don't like fireworks outside organised displays, though I enjoy them there.

Hate them. My cats get terrified. I don't think people should be able to let them off in back gardens - had them going right behind us after ten last night - GRRR

You need to apply for a special license for them here in Belfast but it was still like disney land here on Friday.

I couldn't believe how loud they were this year, my floors were vibrating at times.

I love fireworks. I think the only ones worth seeing are at public displays.

Don't think they should be banned but I can understand why folk would want that if they are having them thrown at their homes and cars etc. That's disgusting.

I think they should be limited to smaller ones and it should only legal to light them on the weekends before and after 5th Nov.

YANBU - private displays are crap anyway.

I never understand why people spend maybe £100 on a few bangs at home, when they could spend £10 going to an organised display with a hundred times as many, professionally designed.

I hate anything other than local town/city events. After being woken up at 3am the other night by someone setting off fireworks I think they should be banned to the public.

I have to say that i felt a gleeful amount of shadenfruede (not really sure its the correct description) when the local firework display explosives were cancelled due to inclement weather. Fucking bastards - i hate it, i remember one time we had gone to the lake district and were "lucky" enough to be near lake windermere when there was a firework display - watching the panic in the swans and ducks just left me in tears. Loathsome fucking things, one of my dogs is completely oblivious while the other one is too scared to even come on my lap for reassurance.

I went to a public display yesterday and lost count of the amount of dogs there! It can't be good for their hearing surely?

Maybe my memory isn't what it used to be but fireworks (the ones on general sale) seem to be louder, bangier (if that's even a word!) and generally much more powerful than you could buy over the counter years ago.

I'm quite found of a Roman candle, Catherine wheel and small non bangy rocket in the garden with the kids watching from behind the patio doors but not huge pyrotechnics.
