AIBU?

To want fireworks banned from public sale?

I'm not a killjoy, but I'm sitting here with a fucking terrified dog. He is not a dog who scares easily, but it sounds like the Blitz out there tonight I've got the TV turned up loud to drown out the sound, I've shut the curtains and he is still cowering in the corner. Not even the lure of a treat is bringing him out.

It's the same every year, selfish fuckers buying bombs to set off in their gardens with little consideration for neighbours with pets and young children. At least pets have shelter from it though, farm animals and wildlife don't.

In fact I hate the entire concept of bonfire night really. Burning a catholic on a bonfire. How is that still acceptable in 2014.

Just go to a public display and stop inflicting this noise on your neighbours please!

Like I said the first time there are good arguments for banning fireworks or keeping them under the supervision of someone with a licence. People (often kids) getting injured and fires being started would go at the top of my list.

And although I wouldn't dream of complaining I'm with the people who find the noise a bit much these days. They have got louder and it happens more often now - not just on one or two days.

I just couldn't help noticing that at least five people were saying that the dogs didn't like it. Someone said fireworks were not necessary, but nor are pets.

Dog owners are always saying "he doesn't like this or that" and you know it's possible that being kept in captivity where they have to tolerate human sounds and sight isn't in an animals best interest.

As an aside , I previously had a dog that was terrified of fireworks, so when we had a new puppy I sought advice on how to prevent his terror.
They said that when there are fireworks going off you must not try to reassure them, as that alerts them to 'something's wrong'. Instead just ignore and carry on as normal. I took mine out into the garden and played fetch with him during a bonfire party next door. He's now fabulous with them. In fact totally ignores ignores them.

Yanbu

At the very least, only small and less dangerous ones should be for public purchase.

Save big ones for organised displays.

In the wrong hands they are bloody dangerous!

Not read all the pages, but YABU. Not all of us have pets. People are entitled to enjoy fireworks, you know.
I love fireworks. You're being completely unreasonable demanding the complete banning of fireworks due to pets.
Should all parents demand everything banned that's not child friendly then?

People have been getting them thrown at their houses, through letter boxes, at cars and also loads of injuries cropping up

That says a lot more about your area than it does about fireworks.

The vast majority of the problems you're reporting fall within our current laws

What idiots out there are selling them to children?

Perhaps it would be better to increase the fine for this

Banning it would just mean people would make them - there'd just be a shit load of Molotov cocktails and dodgy home made fireworks going round

For a long time they were totally banned here. Then a couple of years ago they were made legal. The argument was that their sale would help the economy.

Most sensible towns immediately passed bylaws banning anyone from letting off fireworks unless they applied for a license to hold a public display (including my town).

A few redneck towns didn't ban them, so if you are the kind of person who needs to be kept awake by fireworks every Saturday night you can go and stay there.

It works pretty well.

Really? I've never seen a Molotov cocktail in 7 years of living somewhere fireworks are banned.

Enjoy them, as a kid I loved having fireworks and we used to organise displays making sure no adults were present. We got the odd burn or two but flesh heals.
It is fun for kids and they learn to enjoy the noise and flames

Wha?! I love fireworks and loved Bonfire night firework displays when little (still love fireworks now,)
You're saying kids should organize fireworks, with no adults present and hey, flesh heals.
With all due respect, that's crazy.
Nobody should be burning flesh. For Christ's sake, that's what adults in charge are FOR! You've just demonstrated why kids shouldn't be allowed anywhere near fireworks without adults present.

Confused seriously? Anyone living in an area where people throw fireworks in the street/through letterboxes/at their houses etc is NOT the norm and says a lot more about the area than it does about fireworks.

My garden is covered in small plastic firework shells. Apparently Chinese fireworks now frequently use plastic rather than cardboard shells, so you're basically firing a load of non- biodegradeable material up in the air to scatter over the local area. Lovely.

I've lived in a quaint quiet town and people were setting them off in the daylightHmm in a playground. There are fuckwits everywhere.

Um, are you actually READING my posts?! Confused My last post clarified.
Fine. I'll spell it out even more clearly then. If you live in an area where it's normal for people to throw fireworks through letterboxes, or randomly in daylight in the middle of the street, you live in a shithole dump tip full of chavs.
Can't blame the fireworks. The fireworks aren't the problem - it's the people in your area handling them that are.

I live in a very middle class area and have had a firework thrown at me.

Middle class areas aren't exempt from idiots living there. Confused
Should we ban all things we don't agree with just because there's some out there who abuse it?

Rubbish! All it says is that there are often twats living everywhere and you cannot get away from them. I live in a pretty middle class area too, which is also semi-rural. I have known fireworks to be thrown at cars. As I said in a previous post, it happened to us some years ago.

A few years ago in a neighbouring village someone had a lit firework stuffed through their letterbox and it caused a house fire.

Grin thanks for explaining. However as others have confirmed, this happens all over the place. Not just 'shithole dump tips full of chavs'

And BTW your previous post didnt clarify anything. At all.
