To want fireworks banned from public sale?

I'm not a killjoy, but I'm sitting here with a fucking terrified dog. He is not a dog who scares easily, but it sounds like the Blitz out there tonight I've got the TV turned up loud to drown out the sound, I've shut the curtains and he is still cowering in the corner. Not even the lure of a treat is bringing him out.

It's the same every year, selfish fuckers buying bombs to set off in their gardens with little consideration for neighbours with pets and young children. At least pets have shelter from it though, farm animals and wildlife don't.

In fact I hate the entire concept of bonfire night really. Burning a catholic on a bonfire. How is that still acceptable in 2014.

Just go to a public display and stop inflicting this noise on your neighbours please!

I think they should be banned. They are actually very dangerous and i don't understand why just about anyone is allowed to use them. Surely they should only be used by responsible people? you always hear of idiots putting them through postboxes or tying animals to them.

Even if it does happen in other more 'upmarket' places too, as I said in a previous post that says a lot more about the person than it does about the firework.
Why should we ban something because of a minority few abusing it?
Should we do the same with drink and cigarette smoke then? No. We're all adults. We can make our own minds up, and there's (supposed!) to be laws in place to keep us in line if we step out of it.
Don't penalize and infantalize everyone for the moronic actions of a few.

Why can't people just go to proper organised displays? For example, the fireworks display that caused the massive pileup in Somerset on the motorway a few years ago.

So, we're all agreed that it says precisely fuck all about my area. Good.

Yes. Well, I certainly agree with that. I live in a good area, not a "shit hole dump tip full of chavs", which really was a rather smug and sweeping statement IMHO. Abuse of fireworks happens here just as it does elsewhere. It is so widespread that it says fuck all about any area really.

Fireworks are not on sale to the general public here (Australia) and you now what...we survive. It isn't necessary to have explosives going off all over the place.

CombineBananaFister Our local public display on Saturday cost £4 per adult. Under 16s were free. And it wasn't out of town.

We saw a few other fireworks on Saturday, but none last night. I expect there will be some on Wednesday and then Friday/Saturday, but then that will be it until NYE.

I m saddened by all the animals that have suffered, but I wonder why all the owners don't stable their horses at night at this time of year.

I say this every year. I have small children that are absolutely petrified of them and go ballistic every time one goes off. I really struggle to get them to settle down and get to sleep at this time of year, it's awful. But it's not just that... They scare animals, cause countless injuries, majorly waste emergency services time and I don't even think they're worth it anyway! Fireworks are pretty naff. IMO when you've seen one, you've seen them all. Just loud colours in the sky Grin. And yes they are, in effect, bombs. Legal bombs that can be bought in supermarkets. Fucking crazy.

Controlled public displays are the way forward. If you want fireworks go enjoy them but don't inflict them on the rest of us that don't like them. I think it bugs me more that they go off for about a week either side of Guy Fawkes and same again with New Years. Nightmare.

On my local fb selling site someone is selling them. Was shocked. Asked on her post if she made sure people were over 18 had two people call me a killjoy. Reported to police they said they can monitor online posts. I give up. Just hope no one gets hurt but do agree they shouldnt be on public sale.

ScreamEggsAndHam, I live on a council estate (house privately owned but still on a council estate). Does this mean I somehow deserve to have fireworks thrown at me and my children then? You judgemental person. Most of the people that live on my street are lovely. But no you must presume we all sit out in the street drinking lager, smoking weed and throwing fireworks at eachother. Seeing as we're all "chavs" and all that.

yanbu

There will be more going off over here in people's gardens due to the fact that the biggest display in the area has been cancelled due to the firefighter strike i'm sure.

"I m saddened by all the animals that have suffered, but I wonder why all the owners don't stable their horses at night at this time of year."
This is something that gets debated on the horse forums every year. The thing is, arguably it's better to have the horses out where they can see all around them. They are prey animals, so when they have a noisy and unknown threat going on (like a storm), you will see them highly agitated, out in the middle of a field looking to see where it's coming from and deciding if they need to run away. In a stable they can only look out over the door, and they've got solid walls to bounce off. Horrific injuries happen to stabled horses on firework night, not because they are directly hurt by fireworks, but from incidents where they try to jump out over the door, or fall and hurt themselves in panic. And... rather bad to shut the top of the stable door and confine them inside a complete box, most horses are bothered by that on a good night!
Of course there are the barns of hay, and even stables, that have been set alight by stray fireworks, (And Chinese fucking lanterns!!), causing loss, injury and death. And the stupid neighbours who point their fireworks over the nearest open space - the horses' field.
I suppose people could be banned from keeping pet and companion animals so that others can have the joy of fireworks without all this bother. Hmm

YANBU - fireworks should only be sold to those with a licence for a public display.

We looked after a Guide Dog a couple of years ago who was terrified of fireworks. I always knew animals didn't like fireworks, but I never appreciated quite how terrified a dog could be until then.

Dont worry, the police really do keep an eye on FB selling/gumtree etc for fireworks and other illegal sales. The idiots are actually quite thick to try selling them illegally from their own profile with name and countless other details on. I dont bother questioning the legality online because i'd rather they didnt remove the evidence off fb.

She was still selling this morning. Local police pm me back saying this... (Cut and paste)............. Fireworks can only be sold to those over 18 and those selling them have a responsibility not to sell them to anyone under this age. If the advert appears to be unofficial then I would suggest reporting this to facebook as they may well consider this an inappropriate use of their site. Police can monitor facebook but this is dependent on the situation and from the information provided it does not appear to be something that we would investigate. However, If you require any further advice please contact us back. ...... As i said i give up. Have no idea how to report to fb and if it a problem surely the police should do something. X

To report to FB you click on the downwards pointing arrow to the top right of the post. It will give you options to report to FB and for what reason.

We cant know the reason behind every police decision but trust their judgement. Perhaps they know more than you about that particular seller. Perhaps they've been checked out already. The police so monitor online sales but you have to let them make the call and not just assume nothing is being done.

Local police know about which site, her name and have picture of it so am leaving it like that. Maybe its behind the scenes but at least i did something. What surprised me was the number of people buying off her. How do they know they wont explode in your face.

You can still report to FB and let them investigate too. If you think they are being sold illegally.
