To be a bit dismayed if 4 million women visit this site, why are there so few posts on the feminism threads?

Ok so I know there are lots of lurkers but if there are really millions of women who go on MN, why are so many threads on the feminism section consisting of so few women? It doesn't make sense to me as so many issues that
women post about on many different topics are actually feminist issues when it comes down to it...

i miss dittany's posts too. i lurked a lot back when she used to post. i missed what happened when she left but i soon realised she had gone and was sad about that

WD41 · 31/10/2014 14:08

I'm a feminist and enjoy reading threads on FWR from time to time.

However I don't post because tbh, I find it a little intimidating. The posters over there are clearly extremely intelligent & much of it goes over my head. I don't think I would have anything valid to add to threads really.

Perhaps we need a FWR lite?!

BarbarianMum · 31/10/2014 14:09

But really, Feminism is for women, about women, by women. I think that Feminists think that they have enough on their plate, without having to discuss men's issues too. It isn't really what they are all about.

And this is where I have a problem with it (this particular brand of feminist thought). Because I have a father, a husband, brothers, sons. Because I don't see how we can having equality for women without having it for men too.

Of course, in practical terms, this means I spend 95% of my time discussing and striving for female equality but the other 5% is important too. In particular, I've been horrified at the torrent of negative messages even tiny boys experience if they try and step out of the 'typical boy' stereotype (obviously girls get this as well but I knew about that already). The role of women in socialising children into stereotypical behaviour has also surprised and horrified me and then made me rage.

Pandora37 · 31/10/2014 14:12

I think I've posted there two or three times. I look sometimes but I agree that some of the posts about trans people are quite hateful which really puts me off. If you're going to try and promote the rights of one group in society whilst slamming the rights of another then I'm not interested. Plus I know some of my views won't go down very well and I'll probably be ganged up on so I don't see the point.

I posted this earlier and it has been quoted a couple of times. For clarity, can I just re-emphasise that it is my opinion, as a man and an observer of the FWR page. It isn't anything that any of the FWR stalwarts have said. I don't want people getting their arse kicked for something that they didn't write.

PacificWerewolf · 31/10/2014 14:28

Yes, buffy, I think I did start a PiV thread a while back - from memory because I could not get my head around 'normal' intercourse being an 'issue'. I learnt Smile.

This has really turned in quite an interesting thread IMO.

WorraLiberty · 31/10/2014 14:30

Feminism is for everyone, or at least it should be.

BarbarianMum · 31/10/2014 14:32

Actually it is a sentiment that appears frequently on the FWR board nojacket, although it is by no means a universally held opinion there. It occurs often enough for me not to feel at home there though.

IPityThePontipines · 31/10/2014 14:33

Buffy - I've been on the threads. I know exactly what was written on them. I think you're being extremely disengenious.

When women say they've found something hateful shouldn't it be believed, or does it not count when they're saying it about Fwr?

Stupidhead · 31/10/2014 14:41

Well thank you all for the offers of beer, I do actually drink pints when out Grin

Lougle answered the original question for me right in the second post on this thread:

Perhaps because you're only allowed to past there if you subscribe to the feminism they approve of?

I've hidden all the topics.

daisychain01 · 31/10/2014 14:55

I am female, but don't feel the need to justify my beliefs about living as a woman. I can't think of anything worse that getting caught up in the vociferous dialogue.

Much rather enjoy Chat, AIBU and step Parents! Free country!

HaroldsBishop · 31/10/2014 15:03

Fraidycat - "Men are not collectively responsible for anything. Neither are blacks, Jews, Muslims or immigrants."

THIS!

To be fair to the FWR regulars, they have to put up with a hell of a lot of trolls. It's a constant barrage. So you can understand somewhat the defensiveness when faced with an unknown username.

WorraLiberty · 31/10/2014 15:06

It's interesting what a PP said on the subject of trolls though

Lots of people have been accused of being a troll/MRA, when in fact they've simply been a regular name changer.

So perhaps the topic isn't trolled as much as is actually thought?

JackSkellington · 31/10/2014 15:37

I don't post there as I am female, but not a feminist. Regular poster but I've went for a Halloween-inspired NC. :)

BoneyBackJefferson · 31/10/2014 15:51

"Lots of people have been accused of being a troll/MRA, when in fact they've simply been a regular name changer."

Or just had a difference of opinion.

Feminism is for everyone, or at least it should be.

I agree but some will tell you that men cannot be feminists.

ElkTheory · 31/10/2014 15:55

On the occasions I have read the FWR board, I have found the discussions uninteresting, repetitive, sometimes overloaded with jargon at the expense of reasoned argument, and often dominated by a particular POV. Of course I'm a feminist and I enjoy debates around the subject. Maybe I caught the boards on a series of bad days, so perhaps I'll have a gander over there again.

RedToothBrush · 31/10/2014 16:02

I get the point about violence, and men suffering it too. But really, Feminism is for women, about women, by women. I think that Feminists think that they have enough on their plate, without having to discuss men's issues too. It isn't really what they are all about.

Bingo. This is the absolute classic example of what REALLY pisses me off about FWR. It seeks to makes everything about women as an isolated entity from the rest of society. It seeks to makes women the victim, rather than discussing the fucking problem and its real causes. Yes feminism is about women, their point of view and their experiences, but its not to the exclusion of everything else which is what I think a lot of the FWR seek to make it. It completely lacks context, except to say its the ruddy patriarchy and have a whinge about how much harder women have it as if its a bloody competition.

And this is exactly why I avoid FWR as it makes me so angry. I think it tends to bring the worst out of me and a lot of other posters on both sides of the fence, because there is no willingness to allow discussion to go beyond certain limits which a small number of people draw up. The conversation is controlled and limited by it.

Hence why I think discussing issues in a more generalised way on the rest of MN is far more productive and in all honesty no less feminist. Just not the prescribed, blinkered and frankly snobby brand that is the only one allowed on FWR.
