Who was BU here? Three choices!

Leaving the supermarket this morning. I approached the lifts with my trolley to go down to the carpark. There was one open, and an argument going on inside. Two women with a trolley, and a man who went in ahead of me with a trolley and a little girl.

The women were telling the man to get out of the lift because they couldn't be in there with a man. The man said something to the effect that if they didn't like it they should get out. The women said he should wait for another lift because they were in first, and he was being offensive to their religion.

As it was a stalemate and there were others waiting behind, I pushed my trolley into the lift between the women and the door, and pressed the lift button to go down. The women didn't say anything in the lift but when we got out one of them screamed something unintelligible at me.

Who was BU?

Did you let them a chance to leave the lift if they wanted to?

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 25/10/2014 14:36

They were, absolutely.

MQv2 · 25/10/2014 14:37

Them

LovleyRitaMeterMaid · 25/10/2014 14:38

They, as in the women.

ThePinkOcelot · 25/10/2014 14:38

They were definitely. They should have the stairs!!

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 25/10/2014 14:38

The crazy women of course.

BiancaDelRio · 25/10/2014 14:38

The women were. Without shadow of a doubt.

Nomama · 25/10/2014 14:38

The women were. No doubt about that.

He was right, the choice was theirs, stay - leave - whatever.

There behaviour was utterly incomprehensible, rude and entitled. I don't really care what their religion demands of them they have no right to impose it on others in that manner.

I'd imagine that bloke will be furious for days, especially as he was with (presumably) his daughter. What message was she getting from them? Daddy is evil!!

LemonBreeland · 25/10/2014 14:39

They were. They had opportunity to get out and take a separate lift before you got in.

NeedABumChangeNotANameChange · 25/10/2014 14:39

I would have said something to them actually, we don't discriminate based upon gender in this country. Men are allowed in all lifts as are women.

Vivacia · 25/10/2014 14:39

He was right, the choice was theirs, stay - leave - whatever.

I think that the OP is asking, was she unreasonable to take that choice away.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 25/10/2014 14:40

The women

WD41 · 25/10/2014 14:41

The women were being unreasonable. Very.

Nancy66 · 25/10/2014 14:43

the women were being ridiculous. If it's so important to their religion that they do not encounter any men then they should stay at home.

Good on the man for not pandering to this nonsense.

cailindana · 25/10/2014 14:43

The women. Good on you for breaking it up though, you were totally right to just ignore them and carry on.

VileStatistyx · 25/10/2014 14:44

I think they were probably the most unreasonable. You can't dictate to strangers how and when they may access a public facility.

Although it really wouldn't have hurt him to just wait for the next lift. It would probably have been quicker to just let them go than to hold up the lift arguing about it.

Nomama · 25/10/2014 14:46

Vivacia, I understood the three options bit... but don't think OP was in any way BU. A lift is a lift. The women were being ridiculous were wholly responsible for their own actions and any ramifications - including a sensible woman thinking 'fuck it' and using the lift despite their antics.

Well I certainly blocked their path out of the lift because my trolley was across the door.
But these lifts are very slow to operate and if they had shown any intention to move I would have backed out and stopped the doors closing.

The two women were
It's a public space , poor man . I would have pushed the button too

Vivacia · 25/10/2014 14:49

The women were being ridiculous

I'm not sure I'm comfortable with removing people's choice to make decisions you feel are ridiculous. Would you expect everyone not to be ridiculous about eating a bacon sandwich, shaving their arm pits or drinking alcohol?
