Who was BU here? Three choices!

Leaving the supermarket this morning. I approached the lifts with my trolley to go down to the carpark. There was one open, and an argument going on inside. Two women with a trolley, and a man who went in ahead of me with a trolley and a little girl.

The women were telling the man to get out of the lift because they couldn't be in there with a man. The man said something to the effect that if they didn't like it they should get out. The women said he should wait for another lift because they were in first, and he was being offensive to their religion.

As it was a stalemate and there were others waiting behind, I pushed my trolley into the lift between the women and the door, and pressed the lift button to go down. The women didn't say anything in the lift but when we got out one of them screamed something unintelligible at me.

Who was BU?

The women were being unreasonable, not you or the man in the lift. They could have waited for the next lift.

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 25/10/2014 17:40

Although it really wouldn't have hurt him to just wait for the next lift. It would probably have been quicker to just let them go than to hold up the lift arguing about it

Really? It might not have hurt him but it would affect equality. People should not back down to ridiculous requests or demands.

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:43

I don't think the OP is suggesting this is a requirement for a whole religion and therefore would be seen all across the land. I've never seen anything like it either but it doesn't mean it didn't happen and there weren't two oddballs in her lift.

This^

SassySugarCane · 25/10/2014 18:24

Lets be fair here, the ladies in question had clearly had plenty of time to vacate the lift before OP got there. What they decided to do instead was force their beliefs on the poor bloke in the lift by objecting to his prescence. They were being completely unreasonable and rude.

stonecircle · 25/10/2014 18:29

Er Vivacia - those things don't impinge on other people. Telling a grown man to get out of a lift does.

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2014 18:29

The women were.

BedRoomCurtains · 25/10/2014 18:36

Thanks MNHQ Thanks

OP I think you made the guys life a lot easier as otherwise he would be asking if he was unreasonable, but you showed him that he wasn't by getting in the lift

Vivacia · 25/10/2014 18:36

Er Vivacia - those things don't impinge on other people. Telling a grown man to get out of a lift does.

I agree, and I hadn't made those comments in respect of them asking him to leave, but in reference to them being given the option to leave. It may seem ridiculous to a third party that they might want to, but is that a reason to not allow them the choice?

Thewrongmans · 25/10/2014 18:41

This just screams of a DM headline. I find it rather worrying what the OP hopes to achieve here.

CrispyFern · 25/10/2014 18:59

Why was I deleted? I didn't say the poster was a troll! Just a liar! I think it's a real life person, telling lies! Not an imaginary one. Can we not say that now? I think there's a difference, isn't there?

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 19:05

And what do you think trolls are Fern? Actual fairy tale creatures?

There you go again...

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 25/10/2014 19:31

Why is Sally being slaughtered like this?
We weren't there but equally why disbelieve her story with such certainty?

Some nasty twattishness on this thread.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 25/10/2014 19:35

@CrispyFern

Can we not say that now? I think there's a difference, isn't there?
Nope
TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 25/10/2014 19:36

Mn info troll hunting
Thanks awfully

Hakluyt · 25/10/2014 19:40

Why don't exciting things like this ever happen to me? I never get screamed at by anyone in public, nobody had ever tutted or catsbum mouthed at me, nobody had ever accused me of indecent exposure for breast feeding or questioned my parenting skills....

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 19:46

I'm sure we can arrange something Hak Grin

I have no idea SanDiego, but the antics o this thread are making me irritable because, actually, the man's dilemma is interesting.

wanttosqueezeyou · 25/10/2014 20:27

The women were being unreasonable.

I think he was right not to bow to their ridiculous and unreasonable behaviour.

I've never seen anything like this either but then I've never been chastised for breastfeeding in public either. Doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 20:36

Of course such things concerning religion happen. M&S sanctioned a bizarre 'stand' by their staff not long ago (although we don't know the religion of the women in the OP);

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/ms-apologises-after-saying-muslim-staff-may-refuse-to-serve-customers-pork-and-alcohol-9020982.html

Equality involves recognising that people of all races, religions etc can be awkward, unreasonable or rude because people are people. Only on MN is this sacred cow nonsense taken to such bonkers extremes.

Vivacia · 25/10/2014 20:41

Confused is there one person who has said the women were reasonable to ask the man to leave the lift?

Alisvolatpropiis · 25/10/2014 20:42

Hak I had a delightful lady call me a "stupid fucking bitch" after she walked into me. I was standing still at the time.

Nancy66 · 25/10/2014 20:54

I don't know why people are having a hard time believing the story. I find it perfectly plausible.

Unreasonable, twattish people come in all guises

Thewrongmans · 26/10/2014 04:50

I think many people may not believe it because it is the same category of Muslim-hating racist bullshit urban myths as the 'banning' of baa baa black sheep and not being 'allowed' to have Christmas trees so as not to offend anyone.

lupo5 · 26/10/2014 04:58

YANBU at all.I would do the same thing op and wouldn't even blink...sorry just being very honest...
