Who was BU here? Three choices!

Leaving the supermarket this morning. I approached the lifts with my trolley to go down to the carpark. There was one open, and an argument going on inside. Two women with a trolley, and a man who went in ahead of me with a trolley and a little girl.

The women were telling the man to get out of the lift because they couldn't be in there with a man. The man said something to the effect that if they didn't like it they should get out. The women said he should wait for another lift because they were in first, and he was being offensive to their religion.

As it was a stalemate and there were others waiting behind, I pushed my trolley into the lift between the women and the door, and pressed the lift button to go down. The women didn't say anything in the lift but when we got out one of them screamed something unintelligible at me.

Who was BU?

I have lived and worked in some of the most diverse communities in the UK where I, as a white, English person, was in the minority population and I never came across such silliness.

Most people - whatever their religion - operate on a live and let live basis.

ChillingGrinBloodLover · 25/10/2014 16:39

The child.

I don't think the OP is suggesting this is a requirement for a whole religion and therefore would be seen all across the land. I've never seen anything like it either but it doesn't mean it didn't happen and there weren't two oddballs in her lift.

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2014 16:40

Perhaps if I had been in their first, it might have been different.

But you got in and immediately solved the 'problem', as they were no longer alone in the lift with him.

So why are you claiming she screamed at you?

I really don't think you thought this through...

OhBuggeringBollocks · 25/10/2014 16:41

I have often disagreed with you on matters of racism in the past OP.

The chances of such an inflammatory event happening to you are incredibly small ...

Sallyingforth · 25/10/2014 16:52

why are you claiming she screamed at you?
But that's what she did. She was very quiet in the lift though.

I have often disagreed with you on matters of racism in the past OP.
If you say so. I'm not sure why this should be called racist though. I have no idea what race these women were. It was religion that was mentioned, and - unlike many people on here - I'm always cautious not to offend people's sincerely held beliefs.

If you really have followed my previous postings, you will know that I have a lovely black DP, who I think would be rather shocked at someone suggesting I am a racist.

Our supermarket is the type with car park ground floor, shop above, so all the lifts are HUGE!

OhBuggeringBollocks · 25/10/2014 16:55

You're right I should have said prejudiced views not racist.

WorraLiberty · 25/10/2014 16:57

Are you sure she didn't scream 'thank you' Wink

On another note, why would your black DP be rather shocked at someone suggesting you are racist?

By that, I mean what does the colour of your DP's skin have to do with whether you might/might not be racist?

wawabear · 25/10/2014 16:59

Gender discrimination is illegal. If they felt uncomfortable being in a lift with a male then they should have waited for another lift or taken the stairs. To demand that he leave the lift is being inflammatory.

Sallyingforth · 25/10/2014 17:03

Thank you wawabear and the others who answered my AIBU.

I tried hard not to let this get dragged down into matters of prejudice but I should have realised it was inevitable given the circumstances.

Time for me to take a break from MN for a while. Good afternoon.

OP YANBU :-)
And really can't believe the size if the lift and people not having seen a big supermarket lift in their own micro world would cause them to question everything else

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:13

Why the trollhunting? Confused

Pipbin · 25/10/2014 17:16

It is possible to be racist against just certain races. So you could just be anti-islamic or anti-semitic, of example. Just because you, or your partner are not white it doesn't mean you can't be racist.

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:17

They were being U. They could have opted to have shopping delivered or taken a male chaperone.

If you were being extravagantly reasonable OP you could have given them the option to leave the lift before you squeezed in but I don't blame you when they were being so daft.

Afternoon all

BTW, OP MNHQ did say this week they would consider banning more frequently for trollhunting, so go ahead and report trollhunting posts if they are annoying you I certainly can't see any justification for them

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:21

Ah X post OliviaMumsnet can you confirm latest position on trollhunting?

Or am I being well behaved for no good reason?

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:23

It is all sounding rather improbable.

In what way Ici? Confused

Perfectlypurple · 25/10/2014 17:24

We had a massive thread last week about troll hunting. If you don't believe an op just report!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 25/10/2014 17:25

The M&S lift in the (small) city I live in is absolutely massive. Three trolleys and 4 adults and a child would probably fit.

TheOnlyOliviaMumsnet · 25/10/2014 17:26

Twas ever there - Please don't troll hunt
It is not helpful.
Folk who consistently break the guidelines are dealt with accordingly.
Thanks awfully

ArsenicChaseScream · 25/10/2014 17:34

Loads of people are more shouty/mouthy/entitled about their needs/wants now, be it dietary or religious or whatever.

If it was women in a lift screaming at a peanut-eater, no-one on MN would raise a single eyebrow hair.
