To be totally baffled (Ched Evans related)

Just reading in the guardian that Ched Evans has applied to the Criminal Cases Review Commission to review his case. That's fine because it is part of our due process and legal system.

However, in the article it points out that his girlfriend's father is paying for appeal barristers, private detectives and even offering a reward for information in order to help his appeal. Why would you do that? Why would you put up so much money to protect a person who at best (from their perspective at least) cheated on your daughter in a rather deplorable fashion and at worst a rapist? Why would got want your daughter to be with such a person?

I really don't understand.

I'll see if I can get the link to work.

Ah I can see the autobiography flying off the shelves...

'It's Not Rape If It Was In A Hotel Room: My (Personal and Profound) Story' by chEdDwin chEddwYn chEd EvanS

With a foreword by Judy Finnigan

LilAnnieAmphetamine · 24/10/2014 12:42

That is one (potential) book that I will take great pleasure in hiding behind other books, kicking underneath shelf displays or tipping over the back of them.

Grin at the Finnegan foreword. A wry grin.

purplefeathers · 24/10/2014 13:26

Even if he wins his appeal and gets his conviction overturned it wouldn't change the fact that he was a man in a relationship who deliberately turned his taxi around to go to a hotel where his mate had a 'bird', lied his way into the room and proceeded to 'have a go' on said 'bird' who he'd never met before creeping out of the fire escape leaving her in a questionable condition.

We may not be able to legally call him a rapist but i'd quite happily continue to call him a sexual predator.

nippiesweetie · 24/10/2014 13:44

I imagine that someone will be writing a book right now. I doubt it will be one that Evans would enjoy.

A question for those with legal knowledge. Are the transcripts of the original trial, including statements to the police and other relevant evidence, available to the public in any way?

AliceLidaaagggghhhhhl · 24/10/2014 13:56

I would quite like to know what businesses are funding all this.

His girlfriend's father has been quoted as supporting and funding him in his appeal etc, and saying he would do so independently of his daughter's relationship with Evans continuing or not.

In the same way that I wouldn't want to financially support any football club who employed Evans from now on, either directly to that club or indirectly by supporting their sponsors, I don't want to do the same thing for any of the Massey businesses or the businesses who are their clients.

nippiesweetie · 24/10/2014 14:07

I've had a quick look myself and it seems you have to pay to have the tapes transcribed. The first transcription costs several hundred pounds and thereafter copies are about £100. So, if the Evans supporters had a transcript made then its going to be a lot cheaper for other researchers to obtain them.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 24/10/2014 14:14

Alice that's a bloody good point. I wouldn't Luke to think of my money supporting rapists and scummy thugs who support rapists and harass victims.

nippiesweetie · 24/10/2014 14:15

Alice Here's a link that might help.

This seems to be part of the business (gift shops):

This link doesn't seem to work well (at least on my phone), but here it is again being promoted by 'Brides' magazine:

Alice A marketing opportunity for someone.

Itsfab · 24/10/2014 14:42

"We may not be able to legally call him a rapist but I'd quite happily continue to call him a sexual predator"

purplefeathers- he is a rapist and we can call him a rapist Confused.

DuelingFanjo · 24/10/2014 14:44

found this rather unsavoury blog which Karl Massey comments on.

"Our thoughts on rape are clear and we do not seek to minimise rape and have every sympathy with victims of rape. Neither do we gloss over the events of that morning and no-one condones Ched’s actions which were morally wrong given that he had a partner. It has been described in the media today as seedy and I wholeheartedly agree. I would however like to make clear that this was out of character and fuelled by alcohol and after living with Ched for the 9 months before his conviction, I know him not to be a drinker having never seen him drunk and very rarely with a drink.
As a character, I would describe him as one of the most decent young men I’ve had the pleasure to meet and absolutely the opposite of the stereotypical arrogant footballer that the media like to portray. As an aside and having met many footballers over the years, I’ve only met one who subscribes to the stereotype. The problem with chedevans.com is not what we say it is what we can’t say and you can read into that what you will. There is certainly one comment on your site at present which I would love to address but it is not for me, it is for the Criminal Cases Review Commission and then we hope the Court of Appeal...A lapse in moral judgement can be forgiven, the act of rape can’t."

Blergh.

he continues

"This whole experience has completely changed my outlook on life, society, the criminal justice system and the feminist movement. How women can fire such venom and poison at other women is beyond me. To Tweet that they hope Natasha gets raped is a juxtaposition. A few years ago I assumed that those convicted by jury were guilty, I now understand that to a degree it’s a lottery and whilst there are those inside wrongly convicted, there are rapists walking the streets who basically got off with it.

A lady wrote to us who had been the victim of a stranger rape with violence and whilst he was remanded in custody, when it came to trial he was acquitted. There was a phrase within her letter that resonated loudly, she said ‘the system doesn’t work for anyone anymore’."

He just does not get it.

Greythorne · 24/10/2014 14:59

I think it is safe to say neither Ched nor anyone in his GF's family is terribly bright. Just look at this copy on the homepage of their wedding list website.

AliceLidaaagggghhhhhl · 24/10/2014 15:11

Itsfab I think purple meant we might not be able to call him a rapist in the event that he has a successful appeal against his conviction.

Itsfab · 24/10/2014 15:21

So Karl Massey doesn't think it was rape then.

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 24/10/2014 15:26

Wonder what he's think I'd it was his ridiculously spoiled offspring.

AliceLidaaagggghhhhhl · 24/10/2014 15:28

Nobody tweeting they hope someone gets raped is a feminist or anything other than a hateful troll.

I don't hope anyone associated with Ched Evans is raped for speaking up in support of him, but I suspect if they were (and god forbid they ever are) they still wouldn't equate that rape with the one Ched Evans committed on his victim. They would have a thousand and one reasons why it was different and 'real' and so absolutely not in any way like what Ched did to his victim.

AliceLidaaagggghhhhhl · 24/10/2014 15:29

That was an x-post by the way, I was replying to the quote from Karl Massey which Duelling posted, stating that feminists had wished rape on his daughter.

DuelingFanjo · 24/10/2014 15:58

Yes, one of the things I hate about all of this is that anyone who speaks out (In support of ched or against him) seems to be subjected to rape threats. If they are a woman.

It's happening in the whole 'gamergate' thing and happens all over.

HappyHalloweenMotherFucker · 24/10/2014 17:17

Mr Massey doesn't understand what the word "juxtaposition" means.

And also what "rape" means.

HappyHalloweenMotherFucker · 24/10/2014 17:18

It is not "feminists" that are threatening women with rape.

YonicScrewdriver · 24/10/2014 17:20

Same as it wasn't feminists putting dog poo in Brooke M's letterbox, but it's convenient to blame them anyway...
