To be totally baffled (Ched Evans related)

soapboxqueen · 19/10/2014 12:45

Just reading in the guardian that Ched Evans has applied to the Criminal Cases Review Commission to review his case. That's fine because it is part of our due process and legal system.

However, in the article it points out that his girlfriend's father is paying for appeal barristers, private detectives and even offering a reward for information in order to help his appeal. Why would you do that? Why would you put up so much money to protect a person who at best (from their perspective at least) cheated on your daughter in a rather deplorable fashion and at worst a rapist? Why would got want your daughter to be with such a person?

I really don't understand.

I'll see if I can get the link to work.

fishe, on a long running thread like this it may be best to have at least a basic grasp of the facts before you "nail your colours to the mast"

Everyotherfreckle · 23/10/2014 22:36

I going to nail my colours to the mast don't card if people don't agree I do think she was assaulted however girls do have to understand if you go back to a hotel room with 3 footballers ones you don't know at that you are not going back their to play scrabble

No, I read it was chess, chess that these girls are expecting to play when they go back with footballers.

Having read quite a lot on social media about this, I am not surprised at how uneducated people like thefisherwife are about this case. I have read the above 'argument' countless times recently.

Just so ya know, she didn't go back with him to the hotel room, go and read about the case.

clam · 23/10/2014 22:41

Yeah, don't let the small matter of not knowing anything about the case stop you from expressing an opinion about it. Hmm

twofingerstoGideon · 23/10/2014 22:46

And that you have the right always to say no but also the duty to keep yourself safe

Of course a woman has the right to say no. She also has a right to get drunk, wear 'inappropriate' clothing and do whatever else she wishes, without some rapist coming along and shoving their dick in her.

newpencilcase · 23/10/2014 22:54

Absolutely. There is no connection whatsoever between choices and consequences there.

For example, if I were to go out and get very drunk I deserve to
a) possibly rip my tights falling over
b) leave my purse in the back of a cab
c) embarrass myself by singing inappropriately in a pub.
d) accidentally fall on someone's penis.

It's a nonsense.

Sabrinnnnnnnna · 23/10/2014 23:10

newpencilcase as you're here, thanks so much for your blog post. It hit's the nail on the head.

Long live the Normans of this world - and here's hoping there are more Normans than Cheds.

Amethyst24 · 23/10/2014 23:24

fishewife do you feel differently now you have read the facts of the case?

I've been in a similar situation to the victim (pissed, alone, vulnerable) far more times than I care to remember. I used to think I had mad street smarts, now I know I was just fucking lucky nothing ever happened to me.

Michael Portillo is wearing a ghastly green shirt on the bbc's This Week. He's also talking crap on the telly (again).

squoosh · 23/10/2014 23:51

Alan Johnson talking sense thankfully.

sashh · 24/10/2014 07:45

Next you know The Rapist Ched Evans will come out in support of "true rape victims."

Already been done via twitter - there was an account in the rapist's name and 'he' tweeted a few things before someone told them he could be in trouble as it is illegal, then it said it was on his behalf.

As for the letter - I call made up, it says everything the rapist's camp have said this case wasn't ie no DNA (not that you need that) that she wasn't a 'real victim'

I want to set up a 'Norman' award to recognise those who do the right thing. Not heroics that make the papers, just the right thing.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 24/10/2014 08:00

His aunt has been interviewed about him & she's (rightly) slated him. Says what most people are saying - he won't listen, he is a rapist etc. So although most around him are feeding his misplaced persecution complex, looks like at least 1 relative can see him for what he is. No doubt she'll be next in line for some abuse from his followers.

newpencilcase · 24/10/2014 08:07

Yes, labelled as 'jealous' or 'bitter'

I was appalled by Portillo last night. Punished twice indeed! Yes, because every other ex con gets to keep their job and everyone just forgets it. It's not bloody Les Miserables!

Alan Johnson and Charlotte Webster were incredibly good though. Calm and articulate and perfectly sensible Grin

I love the 'Norman award'

Grin

I'll get on it.

purplefeathers · 24/10/2014 08:08

That's good to hear tension. So not everyone around him believes that he's innocent but he just refuses to listen to the others. That makes him a very scary individual actually. I hope his probation worker is trying to drum the facts into him.

Where can i read his aunt's interview?

LurcioAgain · 24/10/2014 08:19

Another Norman award - friend of mine got very drunk on a night out when we were students, so drunk that she went back to the flats she'd lived in the year before (having lost her handbag by this stage). The young man who now lived in those flats put her to bed (fully clothed), slept on the floor, gave her breakfast the next morning and sent her on her way to try to track down the missing handbag.

And he is writing a book which he will publish if he wins his appeal Hmm.

He is making a mockery of the justice system, his family are bullies and I really hope each and every one are charged after all their abuse, lies and harassment.

It is time that people realised footballers are NOTHING special and do not deserve hero worship. Make the doctor who saved a baby your hero or the fireman who risked his life to save someone in a fire. NOT someone who just kicks a ball around.

Itsfab · 24/10/2014 09:06

Interesting that Sheffield United have banned fans from getting his name and number on their shirts. Hopefully they will follow through and not resign him.

YonicScrewdriver · 24/10/2014 09:07

At least Michael Buerk has sort of apologised.

'Writing a book' Grin. He will blather on to a ghost writer who will then make sense of his ramblings, more like.

Title suggestions anyone?

The Footballers Guide to Rape?
How to Rape Friends and Influence People?

HexBramble · 24/10/2014 09:51

I'm finding myself having to really argue the point of this case to some family members, who at best say "yes but.... Drunk" blah blah, to at its worst "she knew what she was doing". Sad

The established misogyny in our society is shocking, male and females alike.

Reading threads on MN has been a real education for me and God, I am glad my mind is opened. But my argument loses strength when a certain relative mentions the victims twitter posting. Please, can one of you talk me through this and help me try and understand this part of the terrible accusations made against this poor woman.

purplefeathers · 24/10/2014 09:52

Good news about the football shirts. And a good move because i could imagine some ignorant fans deliberately buying his shirt to prove a point.

As to the title of his book. I'd go with 'It Wasn't My Fault' or 'It's Not Fair',both of which he's probably saying a lot of at the moment.

HexBramble · 24/10/2014 09:53

I hope my post comes across as genuine, I want to understand and argue against the horrible attitudes some friends and family have.
