To HATE people that smoke under bus shelters

PepsiTwirl · 13/10/2014 06:37

This really really annoys me......

Why do people have to spoke under a bus shelter??

I dont smoke, it's a disgusting habit and Frankly, I don't want to smell of it.

If I were a smoker I would have the decency to smoke away from the bus shelter

Angry Angry Angry Angry

It'd like there are more band more things people can't slag off anymore so people will meep harshly about the stuff they can.

Well odd imo.

eosmum · 13/10/2014 09:31

Couldn't say it better than that Baaaaaaaaaa!!!!

ByTheWishingWell · 13/10/2014 09:35

I think people complain more about smoking these days because they know more about the health risks, not because they aren't allowed to complain about anything else.

Scholes34 · 13/10/2014 09:38

If only smokers realised how truly awful they smell, they'd be giving up in absolute droves

Went to a family party on Saturday. Saw my cousin I'd not seen for a very long time. He came up and hugged me. I thought I was hugging an overflowing ashtray.

The reaction to smokers isn't hysteria, it's just comments on how unpleasant it is. As someone said, it's comparable to farting in a lift.

VermillionPorcupine · 13/10/2014 09:42

That's very unfair Baaaa.

It's an addition, an awful, powerful one. I read a quote once, something like 'Life is just a series of annoying moments between smoking' and that really is how it feels, which is sad.

There's no excuse for inconsiderate smoking but smokers (as a group) are addicts, not arrogant scumbags.

Smoking is rank IMO, and I've thought this my whole life. I've not smoked at all, ever.

I can't get overly excited about someone smoking in a bus shelter though. I'd just cover my mouth and nose with my scarf and turn away. Bus shelters round here are just one wall and a roof though.

Baaaaaaaaaaaa · 13/10/2014 10:00

VermillionPorcupine nowhere in my post do you see the word scumbag. I do hope you're not insinuating it's a word I used?

I fully accept smoking is an addiction, it still doesn't mean a smoker has to inflict it on anyone else.

I fully stand by all my comments. And I'm sure smokers are not scumbags Smile

VermillionPorcupine · 13/10/2014 10:03

No, scumbag wasn't directed specifically at you.

It seems to be the general 'mood' on the thread though and what lots of posts are suggesting.

Greenrug85 · 13/10/2014 10:07

I don't think smokers as a group are scumbags. Never said or insinuated that.

I do stand by feeling that those who smoke where ever they feel like it regardless of other people being in the vicinity are inconsiderate!

What about people with health problems (e.g. Asthma)?

500smiles · 13/10/2014 10:24

Smokers just don't realise how horrible it, and they, smell.

When I was a smoker I assumed that people couldn't tell as I couldn't smell it, it's only when you don't smoke that you can smell how awful it is. So smokers think non-smokers are making a big fuss over nothing.

TrisisFour · 13/10/2014 10:38

Agree OP.

It is a selfish thing. Smoke smells awful and it sticks to your hair/clothes within seconds. Smokers can carry on if they want, I frankly don't care if they want to damage their health, but please keep it to yourself!! We don't all want it!

By the way Gamer, your last post made no sense at all! Sorry.

Pistone · 13/10/2014 10:42

Not pleasant I agree but far far worse is waiting at a bus stop where there are a line of buses with their engines switched on. The emissions are horrendous.

Anotherchapterinthebookofdead · 13/10/2014 10:49

I don't think smokers are scumbag - they just smell so bad.

My mil and granny smoke like chimneys, if we are taking them out in the car anywhere, they panic smoke just before they enter the car. When they get in the stench is vile ! I hate having to drive down the bloody road, windows open, freezing because of two fagash lils.

HappyAgainOneDay · 13/10/2014 10:51

fagash lils GrinGrin

Discopanda · 13/10/2014 10:54

YANBU, it's selfish. I used to smoke and it is actually possible to be a considerate smoker. If I were you I'd ask them to please stop or move as it isn't fair to expose you to second hand smoke. If they're under the shelter because it's raining then they can just blimming wait until they get home to have one.

OOAOML · 13/10/2014 10:55

It is very selfish. I remember when I was pregnant with my second child, there was an oldish woman who always seemed to be in the bus shelter at the same time as me in the morning. She would sit down and smoke, not worrying if she was next to me (obviously pregnant) then once she'd finished walk off. I think that was what annoyed me most - she wasn't even waiting for a bus, just wanted to sit down and smoke. Didn't care about other people, and that if they didn't want to breathe her smoke in they would have to move outside the shelter, and if it was raining they would have to choose between breathing in her smoke and getting soaked.

I'm an ex-smoker, and always try not to be evangelical about it, and really sympathise with people being desperate to smoke. But at least have a bit of consideration about it.

PunkrockerGirl · 13/10/2014 11:18

I work in a hospice which has a legal exemption to the smoking ban and there is one room designated for patients who wish to smoke. You can smell the smoke sometimes but the moaning and hand flapping from some members of staff is hilarious.
Surely if they find it that offensive they should have shown their objections by not accepting a job there. Confused It's made quite clear at interview that this facility exists and that it's quite heavily used.

BlueberryWafer · 13/10/2014 11:29

Punkrockergirl that is a completely different set of circumstances. That room has an exemption to the smoking ban - it's illegal to smoke in bus shelters.

ArabellaTarantella · 13/10/2014 11:59

Threads like this always make me want to blow smoke through people's letterboxes.

Yes yes yes Grin

Let's do it together gamerchick

gamerchick · 13/10/2014 12:26
Grin

It'll have to wait.. I've left my smokes in the car which went to work with the husband Angry

OOAOML · 13/10/2014 12:38

Are you proud of that incredibly immature attitude Arabella and gamerchick?

Vintagejazz · 13/10/2014 12:40

YANBU. It's selfish and rude but some smokers are just in total denial about how annoying and inconsiderate smoking around non smokers is.

halfdrunkcoffee · 13/10/2014 12:47

Yanbu. I often get the bus and hate this. There are usually signs in the bus shelters that say no smoking but many people ignore them. One time a young man was smoking, and his friend told him to move away as I was with two young children, a courtesy which I appreciated.
