About the rape scene in Eastenders.

They are discussing it on Mathew Wright and some viewers have phoned in to say they weren't happy to have viewed it with the questions it raised as they were watching it with their 4 and 7 yr olds.

I know it was before the watershed but I'm surprised folk let their young children watch this show. So they are offended with the rape and having to deal with their young kids questions but have no problem with their kids watching all the other unpleasant stuff that goes on in these shows?

Mrsjay yes i said that upthread that page is disgusting! Just when you think peoples perceptions on rape are changing, you see that facebook page.

Differentnane it's been advertised on every tv guide also

I'm glad to see this thread and that others think children shouldnt have been watching it.

I didnt see the episode as i was at an evening meeting and my friend was babysitting for me. When i arrived home she paused the TV and i saw it was on EE. My dcs dont see any soaps however at that point i wasnt aware of what had happened in that episode so didnt think it a big issue that friend had had it on whilst Dcs were there but then she went on to say that she was so upset by the episode and when I asked why she explained. I was pretty annoyed to be honest but as i hadnt seen the scene itself i wasnt sure if i was over reacting. Disappointing to know my friend thought something that was so upsetting to her was fine for my dcs to watch Hmm

Soaps are mindnumbingly crap, in my opinion. There's never a danger of my kids watching it because the TV is switched over or off as soon as the first few bars of the theme tunes are heard.

I was wondering about the intelligence of the parents phoning Wright Stuff yesterday to complain that they had to explain rape to their young children after watching the show with them. No "off" switches on their remotes perhaps? Who the fuck thinks Eastenders is suitable viewing for children?

I hate it, and wonder about society, when soap plots are reported as news.

Saying all that, if as a result of a topic such as rape or DV or any kind of abuse or illness, being covered in a soap, someone seeks help that otherwise wouldn't, then that's a good thing.

I used to be a fan of EE but there's so much shouting and aggression in it that it really shouldn't be watched by kids. Bloody awful programme now imo.

I don't watch any soaps any more so again no chance of my kids watching them. But in a way I wish there were more 'family' shows that dealt with real life issues, just in a less sensational way. As a kid I think I learned what rape was from something like home and away or similar, I am vague on the details but I think it concentrated on the effect on the victim (Carly? Anyone remember?) rather than discussing the details or actually showing it. Didn't EE do the same with Cath/Wilmot-Brown in the 80's? I was probably around 9 at the time. Not sure modern EE is suitable for today's 9 year olds.
