About the rape scene in Eastenders.

They are discussing it on Mathew Wright and some viewers have phoned in to say they weren't happy to have viewed it with the questions it raised as they were watching it with their 4 and 7 yr olds.

I know it was before the watershed but I'm surprised folk let their young children watch this show. So they are offended with the rape and having to deal with their young kids questions but have no problem with their kids watching all the other unpleasant stuff that goes on in these shows?

Linda let it happen because she realised it wa s going to happen anyway she froze highway I thought although horrific very well done nobody can say how they would react and eastenders always seem to research their story lines. Anyway I dont know why people would let young children watch Soaps and I think soaps always teeter on ghat watershed anyway loads of storylines and image s I wouldn't want a young child seeing,

any thoughts on how ee portrayed the rapist deano?

I thought they did a good job

deno, is a messed up person who hates women
feels hes always been let down by women

his dad wasn't his real dad

he was angry messed up and confussed

he seemed to be ok wit linda before shes over heard him telling her kids how lucky they are to have a normal family etc and her kids hugging her as if shes super mum

that was what made him snap

and I thought that was interesting how they sort of showed how he ended up as a rapist

certainly not excusing it
but I thought ee did well from that pov

just really hope theres not some tacky storyline that lindas pregnant and tosh is pregnant
both fathered by deano

JoycemynameisJoyce · 07/10/2014 14:32

I think people should read the thread and stop shouting at Highway, who has been bombarded with information and (it seems to me) is working through this information.

magicpixie · 07/10/2014 14:32

and I agree its a good starting point to open the conversation with older children

why shouldn't they know what rape is and that it is vvv wrong

Bambambini · 07/10/2014 14:33

My views on rape weren't always the same as they are now. It can take a while and some willingness to challenge and change your views on it and see the whole picture. It is a learning process. There are views I had in the past that I'm ashamed of looking back now.

Ee wont let Dean get away with I dont think

Sallystyle · 07/10/2014 14:38

They do, MrsJay.

From a legal standpoint anyway.

Sallystyle · 07/10/2014 14:41

Yes, Bam.

I had a very much loved older family member who didn't think a husband could rape his wife! She was mortified when I explained it to her, but she grew up with that view point and it wasn't until she was educated on it that she understood . It seems like it is common sense that a husband can rape his wife but it wasn't for her.

Bambambini · 07/10/2014 14:46

U2 - well exactly. It wasn't that long ago that there was no law against a husband raping his wife. I imagine many people agreed with her, why shouldn't they as the law said so.

Obviously one can only speak for themselves with regard for anything but I can confirm the freeze way of describing things. Partly it is, is this really happening, I don't want to make a fuss, I don't want this to be real so I will pretend it isn't happening.

I didn't particularly like the character of Linda, or Mick for that matter though influenced stupidly by his rumoured real life activities, but all I can feel is compassion for her and yes, I know it isn't real but there will have been someone that that happened too last night and someone it will happen too for real today Sad.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your reports. Just to let you know we've deleted a comment which appeared to us to be victim blaming (although it looks like the poster now regrets her choice of words) and withdrawn several comments which repeated the deleted comment in full.

We didn't want to delete every post which quoted part of the deleted post as it would make the thread nonsensical, and it looks like a very important and interesting discussion is going on.

magicpixie · 07/10/2014 14:59

I can remember in my childhood the law being changed
and my brother saying to my mum

how can a man rape a woman if its his wife

and my mum replying that she had no idea and that this new laws was bonkers

how very sad
funny how I can really remember that conversation so clearly

I'm only 37 aswell.
so really not that long ago really
actually wonder how old I was when that law was passed

Sallystyle · 07/10/2014 15:42

This is where I show my ignorance because I thought that law changed many many years ago, way before I was born.

Writerwannabe83 · 07/10/2014 15:45

I have a feeling they will make Linda be pregnant seeing as she was so desperate for a baby but Mick said no. I wonder if it will follow a typical soap storyline of Linda having to pretend it's Mick's baby and saying 'accidents happen' and he'll say she planned the baby, came off the pill or whatever in order to get what she wanted etc etc. Like a previous poster said I will be really disappointed if EE turn this storyline into something so cliche and predictable.

NunsArePeopleTooDougal · 07/10/2014 15:46

Marital rape was only criminalised in 1991 I think, which is a scary thought; less than 25 years ago it was legal.

LIZS · 07/10/2014 15:49

We don't follow EE but the trailer was enough for dd , just 13, to ask whether she was being raped .

Sallystyle · 07/10/2014 15:53

Yeah, you are right Writer.

The trailer shows that, so it isn't really a spoiler as such, I hope.

Writerwannabe83 · 07/10/2014 15:53

I didn't see any trailers and I'm a real EE fan. When I was watching it last night I had absolutely no idea that she was going to get raped - I genuinely thought they were going to have consensual sex and was horrified when she was raped. I thinks that's why I was upset by it, I was just so shocked.

And the way he said, "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone" - as though Linda had wanted sex with him just made me shudder Sad

1991? wow, that is ridiculous it took so long.

Writerwannabe83 · 07/10/2014 15:56

U2 - the trailer shows what??? I'm clearly missing all the EE trailers Grin
