To wonder why there are men posting here?

The website is called MUMSnet. Not dadsnet or parentsnet, but MUMSnet. Most people who post here are female so why men would even want to post here is beyond me. It's even creepier when they don't have any kids.

What does my blood group have to do with it?
Smile

HopesDaddy · 07/10/2014 14:05

OK good Smile my first instinct was right then.

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 14:17

OH NO, THERE'S A SINGLE CHILDLESS MAN ON HERE TOO - ^^

^^

Grin

This is the most inclusive website I have ever been a member of unless you are the OP , I tend to spend most of my time on various threads dribbling about Peter Capaldi but there is plenty for the non-batshit amongst you too!

ChippingInLatteLover · 07/10/2014 14:24

Neil Behave!

Livia - Peter Capaldi - Really ... Yep, batshit Grin

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 14:26

Chipping Grin Grin mmmm Peter Capaldi

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 14:27

And until someone creates PeterCapaldiNet, I guess I am stuck here! Grin

ChippingInLatteLover · 07/10/2014 14:33

Urghhhh I just can't even 'see' it. Sometimes people fancy someone you don't, but you can see why... but PC? No, just NO. But it's OK, as long as you weirdos drooling oddities fans have your own threads, you can stay Wink

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 14:56

Chipping All the more for me then... Grin Grin

And that is why they keep us in our own little area, it saves bothering the sensible people Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 15:01

I like when people like weird blokes like PC. I leaves all the more Jeremy Paxman for me. See what I did there?

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 15:05

MrsTerry Ah, clever! Grin

I would probably give Paxman one as well, to be fair!

This is why we shouldn't have MENZ on here- they might catch us being unladylike Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 15:24

It's good for the men. It stops them being under the impression that abs and a big knob are all we're after. It's BRAINZ, BRAINZ

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 15:26

MrsTerry Oh we are doing them a favour then really! Grin Yes, brains and a sense of humour are the most important!

Obviously long fingers a la Capaldi are a bonus

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 15:27

Just saying.

Subhuman · 07/10/2014 15:28

The funny thing is that if roles were reversed and a man said this about a woman, the men involved would be instantly accused of being misogynists.

ChippingInLatteLover · 07/10/2014 15:31

MrsTP JP??? This is the second time in as many weeks that you have gone down in my estimation :(

You take the brains, I'll take....Grin

ChippingInLatteLover · 07/10/2014 15:33

Tell me you are not bidding in that auction???

subhuman by some they would, yes, but not by me :) I'm all for a bit of a chat about who fancies who, no matter who it is :)

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 15:34

Good point! Grin

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 15:36

Subhuman

a) in most of the internet, world, everywhere, no they wouldn't. Men say this kind of thing all the time and it's absolutely fine by almost everyone.

b) when we're had at least 14,000 years of matriarchy, control most of the money, land, resources, government, means of production; when a third of women aren't abused in their lifetime; when DD isn't expected to be quieter, better behaved and nicer than her male peers, then I will entertain the 'Pepsi ad' argument about women objectifying men.

c) find me somewhere where men are objectifying women who are 10-20 years older than them, grey haired, wear suits, talk about politics or play an immensely intelligent Doctor on telly and are saying brains and humour is what they want. Is there a 'would you shag Judi Dench or Ruth Bader Ginsburg' website?

Chipping now he's a Tory, I wouldn't pay for dinner with him. Good job because DH might object to me buying JP dinner with out joint money. Grin

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 15:37

subhuman I know some people would think it awful - I have no issue with men or women doing it Grin

MrsTerry ^^ Don't take any notice of Chipping, she thought I was strange for fancying Capaldi Confused

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 15:40

BTW I don't think Jeremy has made his starting bid yet. Sad It reminds me of when I sat on an eBay auction once, with my finger on the bid button, assuming that the signed JP photo would have an intense bidding war. Nope, I got it for much less than a fiver.

LiviaDruscillaAugusta · 07/10/2014 15:42

MrsTerry Fabulous post - esp point c)

No woman would object to a man perving over someone like Mary Beard!

ChippingInLatteLover · 07/10/2014 15:57

MrsTP maybe you need to consider having a separate account for 'frivilous spending' Grin I noticed it didn't have any bids, but didn't look closely enough to see if it was open for bidding on yet. I wanted it off my screen quickly Of course you got it for less than a fiver, you're the only one drooling all over him Grin Bleurgh

Right, off to watch some top class Hockey. better known as dithering about on the field with a stick in their hands

ACheesePuff · 07/10/2014 16:04

Whilst mumsnet doesn't descriminate against men, and there are many here, I don't really buy the explanation that it's called mumsnet because it was catchier than parentsnet. Anyone creating a website and fully intended it to be used equally by men and women wouldn't have gone with the name mumsnet.

It could have been called any number of names instead of parentsnet.

LurcioAgain · 07/10/2014 16:11

Well, leaving aside the attempt to score "women are just as bad" points (and I totally agree about the asymmetry of the situation, and the absence of x thousand years of matriarchy), Subhuman does have a bit of a point. I think that, yes, it is human nature to fancy people and to have a bit of a laugh about it with your mates - but the correct place to do that is in private - down the pub, members-only internet fora, etc, not somewhere where the object of your lust might stumble upon it.

I read an interview with an actor who often pops up in "most fancied" lists on mumsnet (and I will admit he is near the top of my own personal "most fancied list") saying his partner finds it really upsetting that there are lots of women perving over him online and talking about what they'd like to do with him.

It's not nice to perve in public, where the person on the receiving end can see it. The fact that in the case of women being on the receiving end, it's backed up by all sorts of structural inequalities and wider issues makes it doubly horrible. But it's not nice either way round. And I don't see why Mary Beard would be happier about it that some young celeb - it smacks a bit of "well you've had all these people being nasty about your appearance, but look, now we've found someone in a grubby mac perving over you too - that makes it all better now, doesn't it?"

Sorry if this comes across as humourless, but for me it's the difference between a nice guy quietly registering that a woman's attractive, and a bunch of blokes hanging off a scaffolding yelling "phwoarr I'd give you one" at some passing woman.

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/10/2014 16:18

OK, I'll apologise to Elizabeth Clough for talking about her partner. If she's a MNer. Sorry Liz, you lucky woman.
