Well, leaving aside the attempt to score "women are just as bad" points (and I totally agree about the asymmetry of the situation, and the absence of x thousand years of matriarchy), Subhuman does have a bit of a point. I think that, yes, it is human nature to fancy people and to have a bit of a laugh about it with your mates - but the correct place to do that is in private - down the pub, members-only internet fora, etc, not somewhere where the object of your lust might stumble upon it.
I read an interview with an actor who often pops up in "most fancied" lists on mumsnet (and I will admit he is near the top of my own personal "most fancied list") saying his partner finds it really upsetting that there are lots of women perving over him online and talking about what they'd like to do with him.
It's not nice to perve in public, where the person on the receiving end can see it. The fact that in the case of women being on the receiving end, it's backed up by all sorts of structural inequalities and wider issues makes it doubly horrible. But it's not nice either way round. And I don't see why Mary Beard would be happier about it that some young celeb - it smacks a bit of "well you've had all these people being nasty about your appearance, but look, now we've found someone in a grubby mac perving over you too - that makes it all better now, doesn't it?"
Sorry if this comes across as humourless, but for me it's the difference between a nice guy quietly registering that a woman's attractive, and a bunch of blokes hanging off a scaffolding yelling "phwoarr I'd give you one" at some passing woman.
