ithoughtofitfirst - please don't feel judged. Some of us are lucky enough to still have all that shit ingrained in us by evil ruler-wielding teachers. When people on here use shortcuts to convey a message, my inner 6 year old may wince a little, but, as someone upthread said, it's the meaning that's important, not how well a poster has stuck to grammatical rules. Innit,Honey.

SevenZarkSeven · 24/09/2014 20:01

oh but I don't care really as long as I can understand what people are saying Smile

BloodyUserName · 24/09/2014 20:01

My favourite ever is "to all intensive purposes" I am neither a pedant or an expert but grrrr

mrsmilkymoo · 24/09/2014 20:02

Yanbu. 'Should of' sets my teeth on edge!

SevenZarkSeven · 24/09/2014 20:02

lol

HannerHet · 24/09/2014 20:02

Hmm why do people love pointing things like this out on MN? So patronising

PrettyPictures92 · 24/09/2014 20:03

Pedants corner is over that way >>>>>
Wink Grin

But while I'm at it, what's the correct use of whom? Why is there an m at the end? Where did this word come from and when do you use it?!?

This has been bugging me for a long time. We never learned about it in school, or if we did I was off that day Confused

indigo18 · 24/09/2014 20:04

Lapsed - yes your year 7's really do need to know this 'grammar shit'. I'm surprised that you think otherwise.

PrettyPictures92 · 24/09/2014 20:05

Oh and "or" being used instead of "nor"

(I don't know what nor means nor do I know when to use it. Is it even a real word? It just seems right after certain words...)

VivaLeBeaver · 24/09/2014 20:06

Years ago we looked round a secondary school with Yr 6 dd.

Head of English came over to us in the English dept and proudly showed us to a display board with the pupils best stories pasted onto the board. The centre "star" story had "should of" in the first paragraph.

We left the open evening early.

spicegirl13 · 24/09/2014 20:07

People use "it's only a chat forum" as an excuse, if they knew the correct way to use the language, then they would use it everywhere.

Bartlebee · 24/09/2014 20:09

And it's queue, not que.

ithoughtofitfirst · 24/09/2014 20:11

Ah thanks, Atm i just suck at 3 languages and it really gets me down. It makes me want to back to school and learn just 1 really well!

ithoughtofitfirst · 24/09/2014 20:13

It's Welsh for 'no' pretty

Grin jokes. Obv.

Andrewofgg · 24/09/2014 20:15

Shoot Laura Norder.

WandaFuca · 24/09/2014 20:16

I sometimes wonder how many people who use "could of/should of" actually know that it's wrong. It's a very basic error, and it is of concern that people could go through years of schooling without it being pointed out to them.

Most other errors don't bother me much; but this particular one is likely to have a negative impact on any attempt to get a job that relies on the written word.

HoneyDragon · 24/09/2014 20:18

See you is as bovvered as I is Usual.

BathTangle · 24/09/2014 20:20

Viva I am sure that you meant "the pupils' best stories"...! Wink

fourforksache · 24/09/2014 20:20

Extra gold star for Bathtangle. Wink

DuelingFanjo · 24/09/2014 20:21

Ds has been coming home and using 'should of' he's not even four yet.

dolphinsandwhales · 24/09/2014 20:23

Yanbu

WhizzPopBang · 24/09/2014 20:25

Damp squid

The "myself" thing really annoys me, I can't even bear to write an example because it looks all wrong.

"If you could email that to myself that'd be great." Ugh, there, I did it. I feel grubby.

Andrewofgg · 24/09/2014 20:29

BathTangle I wonder whether we hold the same rank in the Apostrophe Police?

LadyLuck10 · 24/09/2014 20:37

Do people switch to 'chat forum' language? Surely if you speak correctly then it will always come naturally.
