DS1 is in year 4 (DS2 in year 1).

I went to a girls grammar school and loved it. So when we moved out of London one of the reasons we chose this area was the schools. I don't think we are super selective (don't quite know what that means)

However, I was explaining the schools to him this morning as we drove past one and had an impending feeling of doom.

He's bright but can't be arsed. Resists pushing and I am against tutor on principal. I don't think he'd suit an all boys school.

What have I done! We should have just moved to a comprehensive area with a decent intake.

Some parents are already talking about tutors and its 2 years away. I want to hit them quite hard.

Please pile in and tell me to get a grip.

More than 2 laQueen but like I say they are gone now because you reported them. Why, I don't know because you have put out far more identifying things about yourself and where you live. As I said, on Sunday night you named the town the school is in!

Yes and no LaQueen. Students go from out of catchment but as far as I know you have to beat the score of those in catchment.

My son went on a managed move so he did not get in using the same process as everyone else.

One of my others took the exam but had no real intention of going, she just wanted to check if she could get in Grin - she is a tad competitive. Again we are outside of the catchment and I am sure that she had to best the scores of those in catchment.

TheFairyCaravan · 24/09/2014 23:29

No laQueen it was more than 2. It is almost like you are allergic to the truth. As soon as it gets posted, you're shit hot on the report button with some excuse to get it deleted. I just can't be doing with it.

Any way I'm off to bed, I've got an early appointment in the morning.

  • you're shit hot on the report button with some excuse to get it deleted. I just can't be doing with it .

Wowzers.

I have reported a few posts in the past, on other threads that have been really derogatory towards disabled people and things like that and they have not been deleted, and if they have its been a wait If they feel its relevant to the thread, or other people are saying, x post is not right they leave it.

I thought a few people had to report rather than one person automatically getting posts deleted?

It could have changed here to be honest, although I don't think so.

DD2 was offered a place and she is top end of middle ability to be honest. It amused us no end that she was offered a place at the grammar school but is set 2 at the secondary modern!

CateBlanket · 25/09/2014 07:41

Philo - a child really doesn't have to be as smart as LaQ believes to get into grammar. Certainly not the Brightest and the Best!

Hakluyt · 25/09/2014 07:56

"Ah, I see. Yes initially we thought DD had to get a super high score to beat those nearer to the school. Later realised that was wrong!"

And people still think that it's easy peasy for people from disadvantaged backgrounds to find out all the information they need to tutor their own children? If an educated, involved parent like LaQueen can get it wrong, what hope for someone with little education, little knowledge of the system, low literacy levels.......

TheFairyCaravan · 25/09/2014 08:21

LaQueen rein in with the bollocks it is getting boring!

You know perfectly well I am talking about the post where I talked about extensive problems and outside agencies!

If you were really worried after Monday and were taking steps to change, the first thing that would have gone would have been your name and posting style!

As for being "involved with the school" if that were true I would have thought you would have been able to quote accurate exam results, because the ones you have been quoting are waaaay off!

Like I said, allergic to the truth!

Beyond it doesn't take multiple reports to get a post removed.

I'm not familiar with all grammar areas but just looking at Trafford (because if is quite high up the league tables) and I'm not sure that scrapping its grammar system would really benefit disadvantaged children much if at all. House prices in the catchment for altrincham girls and boys grammar schools are astronomical in comparison to other areas of the North West. Even if those schools became comprehensive nobody on lower incomes could afford to live in the catchments. All that would change us that no out of catchment children would get places and therefore wealthy but less bright children would fill the places.
Trafford might not be representative of other grammar areas though because it's non grammar schools such as Wellington also seem to be very very good.

well its all out there for the interested parent no matter what thier literacy but of course support from the primary school, would be beneficial.

Hakluyt · 25/09/2014 09:43

"well its all out there for the interested parent no matter what thier literacy but of course support from the primary school, would be beneficial."

So tough luck to the child of uninterested parents? As I said, if a parent as involved as LaQueen can get it wrong.....

BeyondRepair · 25/09/2014 09:45

So tough luck to the child of uninterested parents

Well no, not if the state primary supported them, of course not.

Just who is putting the child at a disadvantage?

But who cares anyway? Its such a small % of students anyway and as people have said there is not great advantage in going to Gram anyway?

Hakluyt · 25/09/2014 09:48

"But who cares anyway? Its such a small % of students anyway and as people have said there is not great advantage in going to Gram anyway?"

You have noticed that this is a thread about grammar schools, yes? It is a smallish % of students but very important to those of us who have to use the system.

And there is no great advantage to going to a grammar over going to a comprehensive. But the 70% who don't go to grammar schools in selective areas often get a raw deal.

There is no need to be factious.

There is plenty of evidence on these threads which are nearly always running that other state alternatives are fine and a child who will do well, will do well.

Unless the alternative school is particularity known for being dire which is rare of course then there are no problems, and you cannot blame the grammer for the poor alternative

Some primaries around here are very vocal and active in their info and prep for the 11+, others don't seem involved at all.

Thats interesting I thought across board they were not allowed to support.

I think formal 11+ sessions through out Yr 5 for all primaries in a GS area would go someway to level the field

Of course it would, its amazing its not already happening.
