Thank you livingzuid so it looks as if there is no connection.

browneyedgirl86 · 18/09/2014 18:44

I have just watched that on the news Tension. About time too!

livingzuid · 18/09/2014 18:45

Ooh did they? I wondered what happened with that vote. They resisted it for so long.

DaughterDilemma · 18/09/2014 18:45

I don't understand the logic behind this plan to save money by getting new staff, new offices etc a few hundred miles down the road (and potentially having higher corporation tax to boot). It will cost a business millions and they will lose all the client/staff relationships built up over years. This is why I think it's all bluster. There is no sense moving anywhere until the Independent Scottish government decides (together, all parties involved) on their economic policy. If economic policy's rubbish for business, by all means leave but they would be foolish to pre-empt that it could cost them very dear.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 18:45

Plus, is it me or do the Yes voters around here (I'm not far away Cedric!) seem to put up about 5 posters when any no voters who do put a poster up, only put up one. So you walk around and think there are loads then realise they all belong to the same flat.

HamishBamish · 18/09/2014 18:46

R&A have finally voted to allow women to join as members.
260 years of sexist exclusion overturned.
About bloody time.

Actually, a lot of members were in support of having women members. I wonder if the women's clubs in St Andrews will do the same? Probably not, but since this is mainly a point scoring exercise they won't be interested in that will they? It's just a bloody golf club!

BakerStreetSaxRift · 18/09/2014 18:47

Statistically How's your spreadsheet preparation for tonight coming along? Grin

HamishBamish · 18/09/2014 18:47

Ooh did they? I wondered what happened with that vote. They resisted it for so long.

Maybe you should ask an actual member instead of speculating!

livingzuid · 18/09/2014 18:47

SC I think so we have the same Grin

OneNight · 18/09/2014 18:48

Have they something big which needs funding or a funding application about to go in Tension? Sadly that is usually the reason for such changes.

livingzuid · 18/09/2014 18:48

Erm I did. We were discussing it the other day. His words not mine.

HamishBamish · 18/09/2014 18:49

Well in that case livingzuid you should know that they weren't resistant to it, there were other factors in play.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 18:50

For the banks and insurance companies there is a lot more to it than corporation tax. Economic instability is really detrimental to them as it means they need to hold higher capital. Currency instability is bad. There's also evidence (sorry, I can't link it) that a lot of customers are nervous about their money being in Scotland if it's not part of the UK and so companies may look to move for that reason. Each company is different and they'll do it in different ways but there will be movement. For the ones which have functions split between Scotland and England they'll just start recruiting down south and gradually relocate people I reckon. Standard Life I think will move a lot.

But the money is a different matter, it'll be gone pretty darned fast.

FFS daughterdilema do you really not understand the fact that this is not a choice for the financial service industry- regulation means they will not be allowed to remain domiciled in Scotland? Hmm

livingzuid · 18/09/2014 18:51

Hamish I know this. There was a lot of history behind it. But I go on enough as it is so was trying to keep my reply short.

cedricsneer · 18/09/2014 18:55

Yes, but why aren't no trying to swing the undecided too?

And I would have felt a lot less lonely if there had been a no stand in stockbridge as I did the walk of shame with my stickers on.

To think that 3-odd weeks ago I was undecided!

trixymalixy · 18/09/2014 18:57

Student loans is quite a big employer in Glasgow. My friend works in it for them, they don't just outsource. He is absolutely positive his job will go in the event of independence.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 18:57

Work in progress

Yes, I'm a sadcase.

Just returned from voting no. There were campaigners from both sides outside the polling station, but all were very polite, and I felt no pressure or intimidation.

I feel ill not knowing what the result will be in the morning, but there's little point in worrying myself into a knot over it.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 18:58

CedricSneer there was at least one stand - Alistair Darling did one at Stockbridge Market a couple of weeks back

Right, so in that case why did you say Ooh did they? I wondered what happened with that vote. They resisted it for so long. Surely if you had actually asked a member you would have known the vote took place today.

In any case, it doesn't matter. It means very little to the members. They just want somewhere quiet to sit and relax after a round and fall asleep underneath the paper. The single sex membership has been nothing but tradition for the majority with the added benefit of being able to have an extra dram without their wife finding out!

CoreyTrevorLahey · 18/09/2014 19:10

Thanks for the wine, living Smile

I might have a wee cheeky one tonight - Flowers in the Attic is on the Lifetime channel. Perfect referendumitis medicine!

I've missed ch4 creeping around my neighbourhood Grin jon snow of all people! I was just about to post a Angry cos he'd invoked 'braveheart' in the 1st part of his report...

SatQuietly · 18/09/2014 19:15

noordinarylipstick: The absence of the Scottish vote wouldn't have changed the outcome of any General Election since 1945. While we're essentially disenfranchised in the UK as a whole, what more - politically - would we be able to do for those 'poor and underprivileged'?

This is clearly and demonstrably untrue. Even in the last election the removal of Scotland's seats would have given the Conservative party an outright majority. I suggest you look back at the numerous narrow margins in previous elections since 1945 and see how very different the outcomes would have been without Scotland.
