FTSE is up, I think its going to be a No.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 18/09/2014 16:18

Do you think the Queen has had a little flutter on the result?

In her position I think I might be tempted.

browneyedgirl86 · 18/09/2014 16:18

This referendum is nothing to do with business, economics or finance, it is about democracy, royalty, loyalty, history and governance. If people only see things through the pennies in their pocket anything that is not finance related will wither. All the innovation, education, voluntary work, decent services count for nothing if all we care about is money.

I really hope you are not suggesting that voting no is an act of disloyalty.
Finance is a massive part of an independent Scotland. Most people would like to know how all the things the SNP are proposing are going to to become reality? Are we going to be using Salmond Dollars?! . But Alex Salmond can't even tell us what currency we will be using. That to me is important. He seems confident we will get everything on his magical white bucket list and to hell with any opposition. All the points you have mad about education and services all need funding and im genuinely curious how AS thinks this is sustainable. I have no problems with an independent Scotland but the proposed version to me is a fantasy and is based on uncertainty and downright lies. A no vote does not mean you are disloyal.

AnnieHoo · 18/09/2014 16:18

Corey who suggested that young people didn't vote because their parents passed down apathy?

WildThong · 18/09/2014 16:19

Have the bookies moved? They are usually a good barometer, although I'm not going to believe anything until the fat lady sings.

SirChenjin · 18/09/2014 16:21

All the innovation, education, voluntary work, decent services

And what do you think pays for all that - magic beans? Come off it - voting No doesn't mean people don't care about these things, and stop trying to insinuate that it does.

Middleagedmoo · 18/09/2014 16:22

Just popping in with my first post to thank you all for such interesting debate. I work from home with just the four walls to talk to and it has been great to see so many of my own views reflected here. Not voted yet, will do so later, in the meantime hoping for some divine intervention! Feel sick and have spent a lot of the morning in tears. Has taken ages to reach a decision and it's not the way I really wanted to vote but I think it's the right vote for me. I guess that's all you can do. Does seem like there are lots of us who have been really undecided and have struggled to make a hard decision.

squoosh · 18/09/2014 16:25

The bookies are all still sticking with No.

OneNight · 18/09/2014 16:25

Many people have had a tussle with this one Middleagedmoo so you're not alone.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 18/09/2014 16:25

Middleaged I'm so glad it's helped - I also work a lot from home and haven't felt able to discuss anything at work, so this thread has been a godsend.

EarthWindFire · 18/09/2014 16:27

Feel sick and have spent a lot of the morning in tears.

You aren't alone. I too am stuck at home most of the time.

You have to do what you think is right for you. Smile

RJnomore · 18/09/2014 16:27

Just been to vote. It was very quiet. Unless there's a run after work I don't think there will be the expected 85% turn out at my local polling station anyway. It was quiet at 11 when DH went and the people outside said its been "okay" rather than busy when I asked.

I am, not to put too fine a point on it, shitting myself.

Numanoid · 18/09/2014 16:27

Have the bookies moved? They are usually a good barometer, although I'm not going to believe anything until the fat lady sings.

Our local bookies said the odds on Yes were going down due to increasing support, and that their shop alone had had a very high number of bets for Yes put on today (we popped in at midday).
She said the odds had changed a few times since the morning. I don't know a lot about betting since I don't do it, but from what was explained, there wasn't a lot in it, odds-wise.

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 18/09/2014 16:27

WildThong no, the bookies are still at 4/1 No, 7/1 Yes (Betfair at least)

With the talk of Royalty upthread, I was just wondering what the Queen was up to today Grin

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 18/09/2014 16:29

oh I hope the turnout is good - that was the one thing I thought was certain, and will at least make the result more bearable whichever way it goes.

StatisticallyChallenged · 18/09/2014 16:29

You're definitely not alone Middleagedmoo. I've been decided since before these threads but I spent a lot of time before hand thinking about it. It's not an easy decision - and there are quite a few who are voting in a way that for whatever reason went against their initial instinct. You've clearly tthought about it carefully - that's all anyone can do.

Numanoid · 18/09/2014 16:29

By going down, I mean the payout wouldn't be as high, as in you get less back per Pound. Sorry if I got my terminology confused, but that's what I meant if I did!

Middleagedmoo Flowers you just have to do what you think is right for you and for Scotland, whatever that may be. That's all we can do, really.

squoosh · 18/09/2014 16:29

That's interesting RJnomore. I have a bet with a colleague re. turn out. I think turn out will be 67%, he thinks 84%.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 18/09/2014 16:31

Sorry, I think you mean someone else, isitme - I didn't say this: FYI the dodgy electoral boundaries mean a Conservative popular vote of 36% gives them a 20 seat MINORITY and a Labour 35% gives them over 60-seat MAJORITY - as all Labour needs is 31% of the vote to form the next government, don't sweat

MeDented · 18/09/2014 16:31

DD - going back to one of your previous posts, can I ask how you think Scotland will be able to just walk away from all of this debt and the huge amount of interest it is incurring!!! Do you really think the separation agreement is going to see iScotland just walk away with a clean slate?
At the moment all of Scotland's assets and liabilities are intertwined in the UK and without any information of how they are to be split I don't see how any sensible person could possibly vote for independence. AS can say what he wants about what 'belongs' to Scotland but it is not down to him, at the moment these assets and any business contracts, export agreements etc all belong to the UK and he cannot possibly dictate that they will continue to exist under the same terms (if any) after separation.
Like somebody else said, I am not against independence completely but I do no think we are anywhere near to being in a position to consider this now. A NO vote does not have to be the end of it, a NO vote can mean NOT NOW, whereas a YES vote would be irreversible.

rino · 18/09/2014 16:32

Can't settle to anything, so nervous about waiting for the result. Saw police outside polling station, lots of people there. There should be this many people voting every time, that is the only way to get things done. Don't understand how some people don't vote In general elections, especially women, women suffered horribly and died so that we might vote, so we should always do it.!! That's killed about five minutes of waiting time.

AnnieHoo · 18/09/2014 16:33

Sorry corey I just realised it wasn't you is it me Blush I'm on my phone scrolling and got confused as it doesn't show up in bold Blush. Apologies!!

CoreyTrevorLahey · 18/09/2014 16:33

AnnieHoo, that was what I divined from this sentence from isitme:

No doubt those words, handed down generation to generation, were 'it's all the Conservatives fault'. lol

WhatWouldFreddieDo · 18/09/2014 16:34

ah, think those odds are out of date. Here's a linky for comparing.

CoreyTrevorLahey · 18/09/2014 16:34

X posted Annie - sorry Smile
