I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially.

Friends and people that I know take it at weekends, at parties, bars or clubs and sometimes on a night in with friends and a bottle of wine.

These people are teachers, sahms, childcare workers, administrators, financial advisors and social workers so a real mix.

Is it becoming more socially acceptable? Would you have a problem if your friend did it occasionally?

People do it in the family pub I work in, that is a waste of £. Spending £££ to stand pranged up at the bar chatting to Geoff who is nursing a real ale.

Peppaismyhomegirl · 16/09/2014 14:02

I used to take socially, and it's amaIng how quickly it spirals out of control (pre dc's I may add)
I have friends who dabbled. I use the term friends loosely as they have turned into not nice people, and can't see it themselves. It's really sad. And very unattractive.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:02

I am not questioning validity, I am trying to get others opinions.

Maybe it depends on the age and location.

A 50 something from Devon probably doesn't experience many of her friends taking coke in a bar on a Saturday night.

I really cannot fathom the number of people on here basically saying it's okay, whilst at the same time probably viewing heroin addicts as the scum of the earth. Oh, it must be ok, TEACHERS and SOLICITORS are doing it. What the actual fuck. Have you all gone mad?

MrsCurrent · 16/09/2014 14:03

They would quickly become ex friends. Same with non medical marijuana. I'm not naive, I come from a big city but frankly every drug user I've met has become a total moron.

Bogeyface · 16/09/2014 14:03

I dont think any drug is or should be socially acceptable. Not least because the sort of pillock who thinks cocaine is fun has clearly never spent an evening with someone who is on it when they are not. The sort of person who takes it is usually not particularly fun or interesting in the first place and weed/coke/speed etc just makes them even more boring and poor company than they were to start with.

FYI - drugs alter your mental state so if you think that you just said something devastatingly funny and/or intelligent, you can pretty much guarantee that it was neither, and no, I dont want to hear it again...and again...and again.

I have ex friends who got into using drugs socially. Note the "ex" .

Boomerwang · 16/09/2014 14:03

I don't know and never have known anyone who admitted to using it, apart from two people who gave it up many years ago. I would not stay in the same room as anyone who was taking it, and I certainly wouldn't allow my child anywhere near a house where drugs were taken.

I've smoked weed and/or hash several times and every time bar once I felt sick, out of control, braindead and completely useless. The only reason I did it more than once was because a friend insisted that it would get better, that it would be fun eventually. It never was. Then she said 'oh this is a stronger kind' or 'this is a nice type, makes you happy instead of sleepy' blah blah it was all bollocks.

I wouldn't bat an eye if someone rolled a joint in front of me, but anything else, no matter how 'natural' like mushrooms or whatever, I'll be outta there in seconds.

DialsMavis · 16/09/2014 14:04

The people I know who do it are very much like Tingtingatale knows. Professionals who have the odd blow out at home while the DC are away at Granny's

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 14:05

I'm not a 50 something from Devon And haven't lived a sheltered life. You definitely have shit friends, and if you take it yourself, which I'm assuming you do, then you're nothing but a common criminal

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 16/09/2014 14:06

I'm 33 and live in a big city and go clubbing a lot. I'm not sitting in at the weekend doing sudoku puzzles.

I agree with the PP who said you wouldn't view your friends in the same way if it was herein. Why is coke so different.

I've seen people on coke. Fuckwits, every last one of them.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:06

You shouldn't ASSume anything. Common criminal did make me smile though.

PetulaGordino · 16/09/2014 14:07

apparently it's more likely to be 30-50yo than it is 18-30yo these days

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 14:07

Why did it make you smile? Do you not think drug users are criminals?

littledrummergirl · 16/09/2014 14:07

Never taken either and dont understand why anyone would.
Those I know who have were unable to give good reasons for taking it when we debated the merits.

Why would you want to put something that you know nothing about inside your body.
Where was it made?
By who?
How hygienic?
We have all seen food businesses that get shut down by trading standards. I would be wondering what they had done with their hands and if they had any illnesses etc.

Eeeuch.

IShallCallYouSquishy · 16/09/2014 14:08

Not acceptable in my eyes. And that's any form of drug taking.

I just don't see the need for it. Why would you put that crap in your body?

PetulaGordino · 16/09/2014 14:09

using drugs isn't illegal. possession, supply and production is illegal

Mintyy · 16/09/2014 14:09

I know a few people who use cocaine recreationally. Most of us in my peer group have grown out of it now (20 years since in my case). Its probably hypocritical of me but I do think its twattish behaviour and I am not particularly fond of the people I know who do it. I have more of a problem with people who get steaming drunk every time they go out though, and I seem to know a number of them.

I try not to be judgemental but I fail sometimes Grin.

Op, your question and the one after it really does seem like someone doing a spot of impromptu research, even if you didn't mean for it to come across that way.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:09

It made me smile because of your wording.

Re: hygiene I don't think those who take it care that much. I have seen someone sniff off the floor. Hmm

OP posts:
InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 14:09

Oh PHEW Petula!! That's okay then!!!

UptheHammers1 · 16/09/2014 14:10

Those of you that think you do not know anyone who takes it would be in for a massive shock if you really had an insight to your friends lives.
It's everywhere from parents, doctors, nurses, judges, Lawyers. Sports stars, movie stars, just about everybody on TV (even Nigella, Ricky Hatton, Joe Calzaghe), and not just those who have been caught by the newspapers.

It’s in offices, schools, colleges, universities, building sites….the list is endless

IN my opinion you would have to go a long way to find somebody who didn’t know anyone who takes it.

PetulaGordino · 16/09/2014 14:10

i don't think it's acceptable at all. but i'm just correcting your "drug users are criminals" comment

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:11

No definately not impromptu research..just a question.

OP posts:
BravePotato · 16/09/2014 14:11

Filthiest, I have lived in Lat Am for years as well. Mainly Mexico.

Using cocaine is not harmless, it never can be, too many people have been killed.

Cocaine use is pretty evil IMO, and I would think less of a friend if they used it.

Bogeyface · 16/09/2014 14:12

2 of the ex friends are in their late 40's and live in Cornwall, so not quite your "50 year old in Devon" demographic but as near as makes no difference, and as far as I am aware they still take it.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 14:12

In my mind they are criminals because he whole industry is rotten to the core, and the last thing the world needs is a load of middle class fuckwits pretending drug use is FIIIIINE
