To ask what are your opinions on social cocaine use?

I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially.

Friends and people that I know take it at weekends, at parties, bars or clubs and sometimes on a night in with friends and a bottle of wine.

These people are teachers, sahms, childcare workers, administrators, financial advisors and social workers so a real mix.

Is it becoming more socially acceptable? Would you have a problem if your friend did it occasionally?

SaucyJack lol!

I have not known anyone to be more agressive on it. Just more talkative and fun tbh. Nor do I know anyone who has become addicted. Just a social occasionally thing to be fair.

'I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially'

I think you need to change your friends.i don't know anyone who does this.

NamesNick · 16/09/2014 13:42

not my bag

each to their own

TheLovelyBoots · 16/09/2014 13:42

But DuelingFanjo, maybe they didn't want more than a gram? I'm not following your logic.

UptheHammers1 · 16/09/2014 13:42

I'm not against it it's done occasionally at parties nights out etc..I agree though that cocaine does support crime.

To those of you that say it changes a persons personality, I see that a lot more with alcohol, don't see many people fighting after smoking week or taking cocaine, you do if they have had 10 pints of Stella, yet alcohol and binge drinking is totally sociably acceptable.

YouTheCat · 16/09/2014 13:42

I know quite a few people who take cocaine socially. Each and every one of them has turned into a selfish arsehole.

I think cannabis should be legalised for medical use.

bigTillyMint · 16/09/2014 13:42

What Bunny said.

No-one in my social circles uses it, but there are others who we used to socialise with who we no longer really see because of "social" coke/other stuff.

Weed was cool when I was younger, but at 50, it seems a bit sad.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 13:43

Also - did you just join to ask this question?

There are places like Urban 75 where you can have lots of healthy discussion about drugs and drug use, though I guess the responses might be skewed a little on there?

Do you want to talk about your own drug use Sshroom?

SirChenjin · 16/09/2014 13:43

In which case I'm glad my real world is very different to your real world Saucy

sshroom - why don't you think about where it comes from? Why don't you make the association between what you're sticking up your nose with what industries you are supporting?

chicaguapa · 16/09/2014 13:43

I don't have any friends who take drugs, so it's not socially acceptable in my circle.

If they did, I wouldn't be friends with them as we simply wouldn't share the same values so there'd be no grounds for friendship. This extends to weed as well. I'm afraid my judgy pants would be so high they'd need to be medically removed.

PenelopeGarciasCrazyHair · 16/09/2014 13:44

My DP is of the opinion that he is one of only very few who have never tried it, as pretty much everyone he knows has done and some still do on a semi-regular basis.

He seems to think it is in a similar league as weed, whereas for me (while the legalities may be similar) it has always been seen as much more 'hardcore' and I won't be changing my mind on that, regardless of how socially acceptable it may or may not be.

However, I only know one person (other than those amongst his acquaintance) that HAS used cocaine (to my knowledge). If any of my friends have done then they certainly don't anymore, or at least wouldn't be brazen about it.

Nanny0gg · 16/09/2014 13:44

not acceptable, same with weed, also not acceptable and I don't even like people drinking to excess and yes, I do think less of people i know who take/have taken drugs

I am not of the demographic you are probably talking to, but I agree with every word above. I also agree with the posters who point out the damage it does back down the production line.

I am lucky that my DC didn't partake, although they could have and I cannot bear the thought that my DGC may. I hope it stays illegal and unacceptable to the majority.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 13:44

I did not just join to ask this. I name changed.

OP posts:
SignoraStronza · 16/09/2014 13:45

To use an old fashioned expression, I'd just think they were a bit 'sad'. Surely it is something someone grows out of in early - mid twenties, when you realise it makes you talk inane bollocks and makes you look like a boring jumped up twat.

SignoraStronza · 16/09/2014 13:45

And yes, it is something I've done in the past. Same goes for weed.

BunnyLebowski · 16/09/2014 13:45

User No they're not the same. What with one being a Class A illegal substance and all.

WiseGuysHighRise · 16/09/2014 13:45

UptheHammers1

To those of you that say it changes a persons personality, I see that a lot more with alcohol, don't see many people fighting after ... taking cocaine

I see it. But people very rarely on a night out take cocaine in isolation. They will have it with alcohol too. I could link to lots and lots of cases and incidents but I'm a little worried of crossing a line (ha!) and outing myself.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 13:46

"But DuelingFanjo, maybe they didn't want more than a gram? I'm not following your logic."

I think recreation drug use is a decision for the individual but that if the individual is dealing with other people (Family, wives, kids) who might not approve of or like their drug use it is more than likely that the cocaine user will downplay the amount they have had because they want to minimise the worry for the other person or the grief that they will get.

When a person starts staying out until 4/5/6 am or not coming home until later and then says 'I only had a gram' it's pretty certain (IMO) that they are downplaying their drug use.

Does that make what I meant more understandable?

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 13:47

"The same can be said of alcohol."

oh and I hate that kind of 'logic'

For all you know Bunny may think the same about alcohol and by responding like you did are you therefore saying that alcohol is a problem yourself?

sshroom · 16/09/2014 13:47

Well what I have noticed that people will only take as much as they have. If they have half a gram they will take that and be cool. But if they had same three grams then they would take it until it is all gone.

I wouldn't disbelieve someone who said they have only had two lines for example.

OP posts:
Fairylea · 16/09/2014 13:48

I used to mix in a big social circle where cocaine use was normalised. Everyone was doing it and everyone knew others that were doing it. They couldn't conceive a life where people didn't do it. But of course there are people who don't do anything.

I have never taken drugs myself, the worst thing I've done to myself is to drink too much. Way too much.

Then I met dh and he was and always has been completely tee total. No drugs, no smoking, no alcohol. I gave up drinking and am now the same as dh and have been for 5 years now.

When I look back at the people I used to mix with I just think what a waste of a life. Of all their lives.

grocklebox · 16/09/2014 13:48

I think you have to be a fucking idiot. Pot is one thing, coke turns you into a bigger wanker than you are anyway.
Plus it can kill you.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 13:48

In fact I think the original post itself is very irresponsible, and could lead impressionable people to think drug use is the norm. It's not. It's illegal and INCREDIBLY stupid.

FriendlyLadybird · 16/09/2014 13:49

My opinions on social cocaine use:

  • It's illegal
  • It's stupid
  • It props up a worldwide criminal, exploitative and violent industry

So there you go. And I don't know anyone who uses it, would think considerably less of them if they did.

Username12345 · 16/09/2014 13:50

BunnyLebowski I said, the same points you made could be made for alcohol. We weren't talking about the legality.
