To ask what are your opinions on social cocaine use?

I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially.

Friends and people that I know take it at weekends, at parties, bars or clubs and sometimes on a night in with friends and a bottle of wine.

These people are teachers, sahms, childcare workers, administrators, financial advisors and social workers so a real mix.

Is it becoming more socially acceptable? Would you have a problem if your friend did it occasionally?

Actually I know that sshroom implies I mean mushrooms but it is actually SSH Room named after a quiet room in my building.

I am not insinuating EVERYONE is doing however I said I have found it is becoming more socially acceptable. Others have agreed. Others have disagreed. This is the whole point of the thread.

I have not said that I have done it.

From what I have seen it appears that it is harmless when done occasionally (however I know that this is just from my experience).

Alcohol is harmful yes, but hardly in the same league as COCAINE! Come on!

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 14:23

"Who knows anybody who has died after taking a few lines of coke socially?"

I don't know anyone personally who has died, I do know people who have had seizures while on a night out.

I also know people who are at a greater risk of heart attacks and other related health problems as a result of many years of cocaine use.

GiveTwoSheets · 16/09/2014 14:23

Well I'm over age of 40 and I remember going to parties at 16-17 people doing it I never fell into the peer pressure of it, I preferred to get pissed. I've seen lives ruined by drugs including cannabis. I lived in a posh village once and was surprised amount of coke heads there was as I knew the arsehole (ex family member) who was supplying them, he was an invicable prick or so he thought he was when snorting his own gear. He's now a great advert as to why you shouldn't do drugs. So for me I still don't see it as socially acceptable and yes if a friend was powdering nose in front of me I would think differently off them and kind of step back.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 14:23

"I have not said that I have done it."

Have you used Cocaine?

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:24

How much cocaine would one have to take to have a heart attack or can it happen after one line or two? Genuine questions to the medics.

recent research is showing that it's far less the young, free and single who are drinking heavily and taking illegal drugs. use of both is reducing among that group

I am finding it really sickening that intelligent, civilised people are actually attempting to condone cocaine use. How very very sad.

chucklingbunny · 16/09/2014 14:25

Op cocaine is a class A drug, highly addictive and carries a severe prison sentence just for possession. I think this says it all about being social acceptable - clearly it's not. I don't understand why anyone would risk the possible consequences of this, particularly if they have children, and I would be horrified if a friend expected me to condone/partake or whatever. I certainly wouldn't let them anywhere near my children after I found out. I feel the same about weed, it's a gateway drug and most young people who are in trouble with the police have a weed habit at a fairly early age, it's not rocket science to make the connections.

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 14:25

"How much cocaine would one have to take to have a heart attack or can it happen after one line or two? "

surely it would depend very much on the grade of the drug, what shit was cut into it, what else might have been taken and so on...

There are long term effects of taking cocaine and a heart attack isn't the only thing you can die from as a result.

30s-60s increasing in drug and alcohol use

Bogeyface · 16/09/2014 14:27

Inspace yesterday was the 1 year anniversary of a friend who died after having a row with his wife and going on a bender. He was in his 50's and a regular drinker, he died of alcohol induced hypothermia. I would say that alcohol can actually be worse in some ways because people seem to think that as its legal it must be safe, and it aint. Go to A&E any weekend evening and you will see it for yourself.

smellysocksandchickenpox · 16/09/2014 14:27

yeah all our admissions figured they were just ocassional social users, that's why we got so many of them in at weekends!

It is not "socially acceptable" it is merely "frequent" or "common" in the people you know. As I said when my life revolved around thurs/fri/sat on the town it was the norm in the circles I was choosing at that time, now that I'm more into lunches/coffees/playdates it most certainly is not.

Drinkers think everyone drinks and that finishing a bottle of wine at home alone to yourself on a weekly basis is something everyone does when it's not. Its just that people gravitate away from people who don't enable them!

AndHarry · 16/09/2014 14:28

No I don't know anyone who uses it. I would argue that yes, people who use it are horrible, selfish idiots because they clearly couldn't care less about the misery their little kick causes millions of people, even entire countries and the terrorism it funds.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 14:29

Some very different opinions on this thread. Interesting...

specialsubject · 16/09/2014 14:29

I think anyone who can't have fun without drugs is really a bit of a loser.

alcohol for the taste, but not to the point of becoming drunk because drunks are sad bores.

anything else; get a life.

icanmakeyouicecream · 16/09/2014 14:31

We use it occasionally when the kids are away. We've got quite a big circle of friends, some do it, some don't. I've not noticed it happening more in recent years, I just think people are more open about it.

smellysocksandchickenpox · 16/09/2014 14:31

well everyone SAID it was just a line or two but who knows.

These weren't your CA types who fit the steriotype of addicts, these were usually professionals with fiances/partners etc who went out with work on a fri night. Maybe (and this is just conjecture) it is more risky for someone to ocassionally do a line than it is for more heavy users who have a tolerance, similar to like heroin.

FlossyMoo · 16/09/2014 14:31

I hate the industry that provides the drug more than I hate the drug itself.

People that use cocaine kid themselves as to it's origins. They ignore the violence/child abuse/child labour/female slavery/crime that are part of the world that puts the drugs on the market. Each time somebody buys a gram of cocaine they become part of that world.

rainbowinmyroom · 16/09/2014 14:32

Guess if you move in circles with losers who have to use drugs or alcohol to have a good time, you find this acceptable. Thankfully, I don't. I prefer to hang around adults.

The cocaine industry is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people, many of them children, and causes untold environmental damage and misery.

Anyone who finds a 'cheeky line' socially acceptable is a scumbag.

smellysocksandchickenpox · 16/09/2014 14:32

OR maybe it was because the ocassional users got sold the dodgy stuff that the addicts would throw back in their dealers face???

PetulaGordino · 16/09/2014 14:33

what's your opinion OP?

it can be rather irritating when OPs solicit opinions but don't reciprocate

CoteDAzur · 16/09/2014 14:34

"Alcohol is harmful yes, but hardly in the same league as COCAINE! Come on!"

Look into the figures and you will find that alcohol is much more dangerous and addictive than cocaine.

Alcohol more dangerous than heroin or cocaine, study finds

Cocaine is far safer than alcohol in terms of toxicity

Alcohol is more harmful than heroin or crack cocaine.

Italiangreyhound · 16/09/2014 14:35

I don't think it is socially acceptable and it would really bother me if a friend was doing it.

It is an illegal drug and you don't know who has been hurt in the process of its production. Someone could be stuck in a hell hole jail for trafficking that drugs, or killed in a drug-related gang war.

Someone taking it can't know exactly what it is made up of, so what if it has been tampered with in some way, would the person taking it know? Could they end up dead. At the very least the use of cocaine can have some nasty side effects, even if a person does not end up addicted and dead.

www.presstv.com/detail/202411.html

"People who use cocaine are at greater risk of developing open-angle glaucoma, an eye disorder and one of the most common causes of blindness.

Cocaine is known as a highly addictive brain stimulant and those who use it are believed to be at a high risk of developing heart attacks, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures and even sudden death."

There are all kinds of issues, is the drug kept away from kids, could children get their hands on it, could parents get arrested and end up in jail away from kids etc, are they going to end up spending all their money on it and losing their home etc to pay for drug debts, is mixing with drug dealers going to be a bad thing for the person wanting to use it.... the list is long.

All in all I can't see it is something worth doing for anyone.
