To ask what are your opinions on social cocaine use?

I am finding that it is becoming more acceptable to use cocaine socially.

Friends and people that I know take it at weekends, at parties, bars or clubs and sometimes on a night in with friends and a bottle of wine.

These people are teachers, sahms, childcare workers, administrators, financial advisors and social workers so a real mix.

Is it becoming more socially acceptable? Would you have a problem if your friend did it occasionally?

How is my post irresponsible.
I said that imo it's becoming more socially acceptable and then asked others their opinions.

To those who do not know anybody that does it, you probably do they just don't speak about it. Who would really go about saying they did it.

I do think it's in wider use and that's because it's got much cheaper over the last 20 years.

in the 80s is was relatively expensive and, therefore, mostly limited to media types and city boys.

In London it's everywhere. wipe your finger across a toilet cistern in any pub, club or restaurant and you'll probably come away with traces of cocaine

DuelingFanjo · 16/09/2014 13:53

Like others I have spent many hours in pokey flats in North London with people who are doing coke (in fact this is what I was doing the day Princess Diana Died!) but never was tempted to do it myself. I know lots of people who have and lots of people who haven't and lots of people who might if they were offered. I know people who have sold it too.

I don't like it and I don't like what people who use it start to act like. I always think it's funny when people defend themselves and say it doesn't turn them into twats because believe me, every experience I have had of people sitting about doing coke has resulted in them becoming twats while they are taking it and arse-holes when they are on a come-down.

Am I the only one who hasn't name-changed?

sshroom · 16/09/2014 13:53

There's a bar I went to in West London where the top of the toilet and the toilet roll holder was made of some kind of material where if you put coke on it then it melts. That just showed how wide spread it is!!

I stole this line off Jarvis Cocker, but it's still true:

No-one ever says 'what a lovely person he's turned into since he started taking drugs'.

And also: is there such a thing as fair-trade cocaine? I don't think so.

InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 13:54

Sshroom- it IS irresponsible, you're trying to insinuate that loads of people do Coke. They don't. You mix with some horrible people that's all, and should get away from them. They're not friends.

Iamblossom · 16/09/2014 13:54

It was about a lot when I was younger but I don't see it in my social circles these days at all. Probably because we are all parents. And old. [sob]

Username12345 · 16/09/2014 13:55

DuelingFanjo

For all you know Bunny may think the same about alcohol and by responding like you did are you therefore saying that alcohol is a problem yourself?

Drinking excessively is a huge problem in this country.

In regards to the first part, I wasn't attacking Bunny. Just saying the same points can be made about drunk people.

YouTheCat · 16/09/2014 13:55

I haven't name changed, DuelingFanjo. Grin

Skivvywoman · 16/09/2014 13:55

I used to take it(not regularly) but wouldn't waste my money on it now!

But I do know like more or less drugs it can lead on to stronger stuff

People who take coke hide it and probably would never admit it!

FriendlyLadybird · 16/09/2014 13:55

To those who do not know anybody that does it, you probably do they just don't speak about it. Who would really go about saying they did it.

Which just goes to show that it is not, in fact, more socially acceptable.

sshroom · 16/09/2014 13:57

So people are not my friend because they take coke occasionally?????

They aren't horrible people at all, thats not a nice judgement.

I am insinuating that I have noticed that it is becoming more socially acceptable these days IME.

OP posts:
sshroom · 16/09/2014 13:58

FriendlyLadyBird yeah that sounds right.

I think it would possibly depend on who they are around.
I know in bar/club toilets people offer it to you like its nothing.

OP posts:
InSpaceNooneCanHearYouScream · 16/09/2014 13:58

Yes shroom that is what I'm saying. If I found out a friend of mine was doing coke they would be a friend no longer. What an appalling example you lot are setting to young people!!

littlemslazybones · 16/09/2014 13:59

It's interesting that you have started a thread to ask people if cocaine use is more socially acceptable within their social circles and then question the validity of those posters who say no.

Why is it important to you that cocaine be a more socially acceptable drug?

DialsMavis · 16/09/2014 13:59

Seen as very normal among my peer group

Tingatingatale · 16/09/2014 13:59

In my social circle made up of age 35-40 it's not necessarily acceptable but I think about 80% have tried it and lots do it occasionally. These are made up of teachers, drs, Other professionals and SAHM. It tends to come out on big nights out when children are away for the night. I wouldn't judge anyone for it and even though I don't do it regularly since I had children it is still something I will do about 1/2 times a year.

Who is 'you lot' and which young people are you talking about?

OP posts:
wigglesrock · 16/09/2014 14:00

I have a relative who used to work in the bar trade - there's been a huge jump in the amount of cocaine being taken recreationally in her opinion. To be honest she feels it's become the equivalent of a round of shots to some people. The price of cocaine has fallen, the price of drink has risen. All the bars she's worked in have some some kind of preventative measures in the toilets from heated surfaces to no flat surfaces.

And to be fair to the OP if people reading are likely start using cocaine because of a thread on MN then I think there's more dangers to them on the internet than a discussion on a parenting forum.

DialsMavis · 16/09/2014 14:00

Love the Jarvis Cocker quote

TakeMeUpTheNorthMountain · 16/09/2014 14:01

I hate the winking and nudge nudge crap that comes with these threads. No not every one is doing it or has done it. It's fucking cocaine not tea. Do you know nothing g of the drug inducted OP?

Username12345 · 16/09/2014 14:01

Tingatingatale and others who take it.

Why do you feel it's ok to break the law and are you so lax about other laws being broken?

TheFilthiestPersonAlive · 16/09/2014 14:01

I live in a Latin American country notorious for cocaine. You don't have to go far to find people whose families have been destroyed, whose kids have been imprisoned and I recently visited an orphanage in a poor area and saw small children and babies orphaned due to the cocaine trade. They had nothing - no toys, one set of clothes each, not enough to eat. It is heartbreaking. Don't fool yourself - if you use cocaine you are actively helping to destroy lives.
