OOAOML I am so sorry to hear that :( Sadly I don't think you will be the only couple in this situation, but for you of course, it's the couple that matters the most x

Why is your DH so adamant that Yes is the way forward? Is he a thinking sort of a person or is he just doing the 'fuck you WM/England'?

I'm very impressed that you are out there canvassing for what you believe in, despite everything going on at home.

chocoluvva · 16/09/2014 11:37

That must be so difficult OOAOML.

MindReader · 16/09/2014 11:39

OOAOML - I have never been canvassed for an opinion and I don't know anyone else who has either -

trixymalixy · 16/09/2014 11:40

I am also concerned by the amount of people that just seem to be sticking their fingers in their ears and going la la la. One comment i heard today when asked about the economy was that apparently in the event of a yes vote the Scottish Government wil have the powers to sort out the economy so arguing about it is irrelevant Hmm

I find the ignorance terrifying!

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 16/09/2014 11:40

Rose I think it's pretty clear which way he's voting. Could you print off a few things from here and leave them on his desk?

I think that there will be 'civil unrest' either way - this coming Fri/Weekend isn't going to be pretty.

If I were you, I'd be offering to let your guests swap to another weekend, I wouldn't want to be reassuring them it will be OK.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 16/09/2014 11:42

trixy

That's the problem isn't it - people being allowed to vote who really just don't have the intelligence to see through that, just blind faith that it will be OK because that's what they've been told.

It must be lovely to be some people.

trixymalixy · 16/09/2014 11:44

I also saw someone post that they had converted a member of their family from a no to a yes vote. Someone else commented that she might just be saying that to get her off her back. The poster responded by saying the cross would go in the yes vote box if she had to go into the booth with her and do it herself Hmm

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 16/09/2014 11:44

Yes Cedric definitely 'fingers crossed' for the shy NO's. It's sad & worrying that they have been so intimidated into being 'shy'. It's disgraceful.

Spiritedwolf · 16/09/2014 11:44

Thinking of you OOAOML, thanks for getting out there. We've done a bit too (now feel very lucky DH and I are on the same page about the referendum, though obviously it is dominating our free time too).

Such a lovely bunch of women on this thread. I hope everything will be okay, most people are sensible even when they disagree... but I wonder about some of the folk who've been whipped up and may get carried away. Sad

WildThong · 16/09/2014 11:46

Someone in DH office yesterday was blithely informing everyone that when the oil goes, we can sell water

I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The future of my family and my country is in the hands of imbeciles. disclaimer, not all yes campaigners, just the ones that want to sell water

EarthWindFire · 16/09/2014 11:46

That is hurrendous which ever way round it is!!!!

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 16/09/2014 11:46

trixy jesus christ.

Spiritedwolf · 16/09/2014 11:48

trixymalixy the staff at the polling booth should stop that kind of thing if she was talking literally... but the sentiment is worrying.

Spiritedwolf · 16/09/2014 11:55

in case you missed it NHS Scotland £400 million funding gap that we weren't supposed to hear about until after the referendum. Angry

StatisticallyChallenged · 16/09/2014 11:58

And that's after they've already cut the nhs in Scotland despite it going up in England

Fontella · 16/09/2014 11:58

Yep I saw that one too. A game 'yesser' totally and utterly out of her depth on the Guardian website attempting to put her case to some extremely erudite and economically educated individuals who were patiently trying their best to point out the flaws in her economic argument which included the 'well we've got the best and most pure water in the world' statement..
as if no-one else has got water - tell that to the Canadians, the Russians, the French, the Italians, the Swiss, er .. us Welsh, the English, the Norweigians .. yes .. pretty much anyone in the northern hemisphere, but Scottish water apparently has some magical ingredient that is going to have them queueing up to buy it at top dollar prices!

The kindly and patient guardian readers did their best to stay polite and friendly but one did lose patience in the end and ask 'when did you last visit planet earth?'.

As you say - do you laugh, or do you cry? At the moment, I'm leaning towards the latter.

OOAOML · 16/09/2014 11:59

latte his reason is that it will be a fairer Scotland. He assumes everything will be sorted out in our favour during negotiations. There will be a currency union, banks and other companies will not re-register, huge swathes of international law will be re-written. No comment on what we will do if/when my job moves. No acceptance that Scotland might not get everything the Yes campaign says we will.

MindReader I just see if people are happy to talk. I've had some brilliant chats with no voters, yes voters and undecided voters.

ChelsyHandy · 16/09/2014 12:05

I must have some real nutters on my FB. Things seem to have really kicked off this morning and their "campaigning" seems to be coming every 5 minutes, with some more offensive stuff. A lot of it abuse of other politicians. Theres a lot of jealousy about, seemingly anyone who is English, a No supporter, a Conservative, successful or more educated is now a target.

I wasn't born into a privileged background and remember having my education disrupted by this type at school. I'm pretty sure this is why I have no O Grade in Maths. But to them its all about correcting inequality and making everyone the same.

I'm not for one moment suggesting all Yes voters are unemployed or uneducated, but my "favourite" Yes supporter constantly rants about making the "privileged", by whom she means anyone who has a reasonably well paid job, "pay in tax, to show them what its like to have no money". She herself isn't poor, despite never had a full time job in her 36 years (no kids) as she lives off her well paid boyfriend, and currently has no job. She has the privilege of having spouting off about independence as her hobby, because she doesn't have to work. How can she possibly be qualified to tell someone who has had to work for what they have how much they should pay in tax?

WildThong · 16/09/2014 12:06

spirited everyone

Are links like the NHS one and the disruption of the No meeting one 'out there' on social media? I'm not on Facebook or Twitter but always hear about the separatist propaganda being very well shared - is it also the same for real news/actual evidence?

Mammuzza · 16/09/2014 12:06

well we've got the best and most pure water in the world

Forgive me please if these questions have been answered(havent been able to keep up), but

If Scotland become independent and outside the EU will the court of european rights still apply?

What is going to replace the farming subsidies that the EU pay?

WildThong · 16/09/2014 12:07

fontella
Yes, I think he was just repeating what he'd read and believed online.

ChelsyHandy · 16/09/2014 12:08

Since I've also seen it shown as an advantage of Scotland that its people don't live so long as in the rest of the UK, presumably this is to facilitate savings in pensions!

Its becoming very twisted and sick. Its like dealing with members of a cult who cannot see reality, except its a huge swathe of the population that I'm living in.

ChelsyHandy · 16/09/2014 12:11

Littledrummergirl If Scotland become independent and outside the EU will the court of european rights still apply?

No. Countries must sign up to international treaties, such as the ECHR and EU, separately and generally their membership must be ratified unanimously by the other signatories.

The White Paper recognises that an independent Scotland would not initially be a signatory to the ECHR and states that Scotland would have its "own version" until it can join. Interestingly, the White Paper did not say that Scotland would copy or adopt the ECHR until it could join, which seems the more obvious solution.

What is going to replace the farming subsidies that the EU pay?

No-one really knows. There is a vague sort of intention stated in the White Paper for the Scottish state to pay them until Scotland can join the EU.
