To not understand why white bread is evil?

OK I understand it's not good for you in the way that cabbage and goji berries are but when exactly did it become a crime (on MN anyway) to give your DCs a slice of white toast?
I understand that saturated fat is bad because it clogs up your arteries; salt can raise blood pressure and affect bone density and excessive sugar intake can mess with insulin and cause diabetes but what does white bread actually do that's so terrible?

Sourbread another evil item...

Fubsy · 14/09/2014 22:02

Wtf grains are bad for you? Aren't they the original food, after meat?

So dairy is bad, grains are bad, meat is indigestible, fruit rots your teeth, fat is bad apart from tiny amounts of certain ones.

Which leaves - fish sourced from a virgin sea, untouched by human waste, kale lentils and avocados.

Give me some white bread toast - preferably homemade, with butter!

fredfredgeorgejnr · 14/09/2014 22:13

Calla23 "Onions and garlic!"

Only if you already have appropriate bacteria, otherwise they can lead to loads of farting and bloating due to the inulin being great food for the bacteria - which is why they're also great food too.

SevenZarkSeven · 14/09/2014 22:25

What about white bread with onion and garlic in it hmmmmm?

Or garlic bread

duhgldiuhfdsli · 14/09/2014 23:37

"And also, genuinely not being arsey, but why do people cite primal/paleo as being the ultimate in good nutrition, when no one lived beyond the age of 50 then anyway?"

What about grass, is that OK? I'm feeling a diet book coming on...the diet will mostly consist of mud but it's a very special kind of mud that comes from my farm. Retirement, here I come.

Personally, white bread gives me indigestion and bloating. But that's just me. It is, however, delicious.

As for white bread contributing to the development of diabetes, ffs. Excessive carb and sugar consumption may be one of the causes of type 2 diabetes amongst a whole host of other things, including your genes. It has absolutely nothing to do with the development of type 1 diabetes.

Idontseeanysontarans · 15/09/2014 14:33

I love a good food thread, just to see what I'm poisoning my DC's with this week Grin
When I was young white bread was considered to be unhealthy and only for poor working class people. Some things never change...

LittleBearPad · 15/09/2014 14:39

Well I'm off to make myself some white toast and butter. Yum!

Idontseeanysontarans · 15/09/2014 14:41

Ha LittleBear I ended up making a slice for myself when I started reading! and put margarine on it cos I detest butter Grin

MrsMarcJacobs · 15/09/2014 14:45

e numbers. - the preservatives that keep it looking fresh for ages.

MarianneSolong · 15/09/2014 14:50

The average supermarket wholemeal loaf - even the 'bakery' kind - isn't great. I think bread made my hand or with a machine from a good quality wholemeal flour can taste very different. It depends a great deal on what you're used to. If you're used to a ready sliced white loaf, then wholemeal bread will taste not like bread at all. If you're used to wholemeal bread, an awful lot of white bread will seem bland and insubstantial.

JustAShopGirl · 15/09/2014 15:03

whole- grain bread also contains preservatives.

The "artisanal" loaf in my bread bin has E300 Vitamin C, E101 Vit B2, E160c paprika, E472E tartaric acid.

duhgldiuhfdsli · 15/09/2014 16:01

E300 Vitamin C, E101 Vit B2, E160c paprika, E472E tartaric acid.

Yeah, chemicals, yeuch. Vitamins C and B2 and Tartaric acid? You don't get that sort of artificial nastiness in a nice apple and banana yoghurt, do you?

Branleuse · 15/09/2014 16:19

every time i eat wholemeal bread, i secretly wish it was white bread.

MrsMarcJacobs · 15/09/2014 17:52

well basically everything that tastes good is 'bad for you'

4boys78 · 15/09/2014 18:02

I was told by a trained nutritionist that white carbs are better for young children as they need a high fat low fibre diet.

calla23 · 15/09/2014 18:10

calla I came across this a few months ago

All true, obviously...

I can't even have onions and garlic? Sigh, back to eating cake (with white flour!) Smile

icanmakeyouicecream · 15/09/2014 18:11

Of course I give them a slice of white toast, and a white bread sandwhich .. Most days in fact Grin

JapaneseMargaret · 15/09/2014 19:12

dughldiuhfdsli - people died young for reasons other than nutrition.

Childbirth, disease, injury, the cold, having to hunt/find your own food and starve if you didn't, fighting, and, um, sabre-toothed tigers. Grin

Most people didn't live in nice, benign, fertile environments like we do now.

EvilRingahBitch · 15/09/2014 19:32

The stomach doctor I saw for my IBS told me to give up garlic and onions Sad. I smiled and nodded in the best MN-approved fashion. Like bollocks would I give up all my favourite meals. I'd rather have the IBS. Also I suspected he was talking rubbish, which proved to be the case.

I think everyone agrees that organic spinach is good for you? Fortunately it's one of my other all-time favourite foods, when cooked with enough garlic natch.

Goodadvice1980 · 15/09/2014 19:33

I recommend having a read of "Wheat Belly" by Dr William Davis!

fatlazymummy · 15/09/2014 19:37

goodadvice I think that ones already been debunked on page 3.

WallyBantersJunkBox · 15/09/2014 19:55

I remember watching a program where a nutritionist mentioned that white flour was more addictive than cocaine.

He didn't mention the added effect of additional crispy bacon and HP.

Lethal I expect.

SmiteYouWithThunderbolts · 15/09/2014 20:31

I fucking love bread. But it gives me horrible cramps.

Thick toasted slabs oozing with butter are SO worth the pain though.
