To not understand why white bread is evil?

AndyWarholsOrange · 14/09/2014 18:31

OK I understand it's not good for you in the way that cabbage and goji berries are but when exactly did it become a crime (on MN anyway) to give your DCs a slice of white toast?
I understand that saturated fat is bad because it clogs up your arteries; salt can raise blood pressure and affect bone density and excessive sugar intake can mess with insulin and cause diabetes but what does white bread actually do that's so terrible?

What unicycle said. White bread has a high glycemic index so isn't all that different from eating loads of sugar from a metabolic syndrome/insulin resistance pov.

JustAShopGirl · 14/09/2014 19:20

DD's doctor told us to cut our wholegrain bread and pasta when she was ill due to being low in iron - it contains "anti-nutrients" called phytate in the bran layer , which interferes with the iron absorption of the body. So wholegrains are not "good" for everybody

soaccidentprone · 14/09/2014 19:25

It's more that modern processed bread of any kind isn't that good for you. It's made very quickly, with loads of fat, sugar and salt, as well as stuff to make it rise quickly. It's the Chorleywood method.

Bread made the old fashioned way is much better nutritionally for your body. Just flour, oil, yeast and salt (maybe some sugar as well, but not strictly necessary).

Value white bread fits in the toaster soooo well, nice thick layer of lurpack and peanut butter. Yummy!

MarianneSolong · 14/09/2014 19:28

This is from the BBC Good Food website

"Carbohydrates

Children need a source of carbohydrate in each meal. However, young children under 13 months may struggle to digest wholegrain varieties of carbohydrates, and too much fibre can compromise the absorption of important minerals such as calcium and iron.
How to get carbohrdrates into your child's diet

Beyond 13 months children can usually tuck into wholegrain breads, muesli and pasta. Some children manage this better than others, so it’s just a matter of seeing how your child responds."

HermioneWeasley · 14/09/2014 19:28

Some MNetters are sanctimonious twats, who are ill informed about nutrition (as opposed to fads and pseudo science). According to them if you give your children white bread or juice, you might as well be injecting crack straight into their eyeballs.

ohmychrist · 14/09/2014 19:30

I give my DD 'Best of Both' bread, as it's high in calcium.

Bunbaker · 14/09/2014 19:41

"Some MNetters are sanctimonious twats, who are ill informed about nutrition"

Well said Hermione

Carbs are not in fashion so all the "in" people don't eat them Grin

Can anyone tell what food is actually not actively damaging. Every food group I can think of is 'bad' in some way or another!!!

londonrach · 14/09/2014 19:50

Brown bread is EVIL. As someone with ibs one bite of that evil brown bread and im on the toilet for hours. Sister says children shouldnt eat brown either. I hate hate hate hate brown bread as it makes me very very very very ill. It should be banned.... Banned...with a health warning. When its eaten any toilet is mine including disabled as the pain is awful. I cant walk and bend over double. I certainly cant walk up stairs. I just need that evil bread out....its awful.

londonrach · 14/09/2014 19:54

I can eat white tiger bread with no problems but that evil brown...i need the toilet booked.

SoftSheen · 14/09/2014 19:56

All grains are bad for you

-Tell that to the majority of the world's population who live off them, in various forms.

There is not necessarily anything wrong with white bread, but wholemeal/granary bread is more nutritious as it is made with whole grains.

Generally, wholemeal and white bread are made with similar amounts of salt, whether they come from a supermarket or an artisan bakery.

In this country, most bread does not contain added sugar, though bread made with refined white flour is converted to sugar by the body more quickly.

FantasticMrsFoxInHeels · 14/09/2014 19:57

how about combicorn bread?
I think it cearal?

low gi

is that any good or should I say not too bad?

ModreB · 14/09/2014 19:58

No food at all is damaging. It's the balance of foods, so if you eat too much, or more importantly, too little, of any one food group then you have a bad diet.

Bread, even white bread, is a good source of carbohydrates, in the right proportions. But as a PP said, the MN Mafia treat it as if you are feeding kids Class A drugs.

Bunbaker · 14/09/2014 20:22

I have IBS as well londonrach and avoid wholemeal bread like the plague. It is wheat bran that causes my problems, so I am OK with multi seed bread. Bread made with spelt gives me horrendous wind..

blanklook · 14/09/2014 20:31

From the wheatbelly blog :-
"Is wheat really that bad? I thought that whole grains were good for you?

First of all, it ain’t wheat. It’s the product of 40 years of genetics research aimed at increasing yield-per-acre. The result is a genetically unique plant that stands 18-24 inches tall, not the 4 1/2-foot tall “amber waves of grain” we all remember. The genetic distance modern wheat has drifted exceeds the difference between chimpanzees and humans—what a genetic difference 1% can make! But that’s more than modern wheat is removed from its ancestors."

SoftSheen · 14/09/2014 20:36

Most farmed foods are nothing like the wild plants from which they were developed. Bananas, carrots and avocados to name but a few. Wheat isn't unusual in this respect.

duhgldiuhfdsli · 14/09/2014 20:37

"Crank with book to sell has a website full of crank nuttery".

You got anything, you know, peer-reviewed, blanklook? Or just a bloke with a book to flog?

londonrach · 14/09/2014 20:44

Bunbaker isnt it awful. One time i was with pil and ran across the bridge to southbank centre to the disabled toilet. Got a dirty look from the man in the wheelchair when i left 30 minutes later. In my view if i eat brown bread i cant walk (seriously...im bent double in agony) at that point im disabled as i physically cant walk up stairs. I might be able to crawl up the stairs in great pain. Have always asked in pubs if that evil brown bread is eaten and everyone let me and thank you so much. Have once almost asked queue in toilet if i could jump as the pain almost took me to the floor.

sarahighseas · 14/09/2014 20:49

Sorry but grains are bad for you is a load of crap, just people trying to sell fad diets.

Is brown rice and qenoir suddenly as bad as smoking? Lol

Panzee · 14/09/2014 20:50

Brown bread fires up my dihydrosis eczema. White all the way here!

SevenZarkSeven · 14/09/2014 20:54

I'm think the mc white bread denyers are missing a trick.

Surely a £10 artisan hand-crafted par-baked fractured spelt organic traditional loafette passes even if white.

PS I have no idea what spelt is

blanklook · 14/09/2014 20:55

Did you look at the author of the website, it's Cardiologist Dr. William Davis
If you read a bit, he references studies, I'd assume a qualified doctor would know what peer reviewed science is and not leave himself open to question on that score.

Feel free to check out his sources, you don't need to buy his book to find out the thinking behind it or adapt recipes if you want to follow his system, it's all there on his blog so don't make out he's trying to rip people off, it's a silly argument unless you have a sound basis for it, I don't believe you have in his case.

I'm not going to get drawn into the "sceptic" spat with you, I've seen it all over internet forums and it achieves nothing, at the end of the day if you want to believe that's what he is, carry on, but have the decency to let other people believe what they want without being so derogatory.

SevenZarkSeven · 14/09/2014 20:57

Rice is a grain isn't it?

As used as staple by majority of the world's population.

The ones that aren't using corn or wheat.

Interesting.

WitchWay · 14/09/2014 21:00

Toasted brown bread is revolting

Toasted granary bread is tolerable

Toasted white bread is delicious

Just my opinion - feel free to ignore it Grin
