To not understand why white bread is evil?

AndyWarholsOrange · 14/09/2014 18:31

OK I understand it's not good for you in the way that cabbage and goji berries are but when exactly did it become a crime (on MN anyway) to give your DCs a slice of white toast?
I understand that saturated fat is bad because it clogs up your arteries; salt can raise blood pressure and affect bone density and excessive sugar intake can mess with insulin and cause diabetes but what does white bread actually do that's so terrible?

I think ever since people started living in settled communities and growing crops, cereals of one kind or another have been the staple diet for most people. (It would only be the rich who had a diet that was meat-based.)

I believe that 'stone age' diets are fashionable, but I don't think they have been the norm for many many thousands of years.

"If you read a bit, he references studies,"

I don't see a single reference to the primary literature. "Studies say" is not a reference to a study.

"I'd assume a qualified doctor would know what peer reviewed science is"

How is Andrew Wakefield doing these days?

BlackeyedSusan · 14/09/2014 21:08

because the slices of white are compressed ghosts that re-enimatre in the middle of the night and haunt you...

ermm so I heard, possibly....

MrsMook · 14/09/2014 21:12

Most mass produced loaves (white and brown) include soya flour as a cheap filler and to lighten the dough. Since DSs soya intolerance was identified, my IBS has been very well behaved.

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 21:13

I can't see a single ref on that site. Saying 'studies have shown' isn't good enough.

calla23 · 14/09/2014 21:14

Can anyone tell what food is actually not actively damaging. Every food group I can think of is 'bad' in some way or another!!!

Onions and garlic! If the lecture I went to as an undergraduate is to be believed. Onions don't have any negative effects and garlic is supposed to be beneficial.

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 21:15

He might know what peer-reviewed research is, but he sure as hell ain't demonstrating it!

EggsAreRound · 14/09/2014 21:16

One of the many things I like about living here (France) is that they're very serious about food, bread especially. A 'tradition' here is a crusty, chewy thing, with some body, not one of those plastic so-called baguettes sold as French bread in other countries (like Australia).
The range of sourdough (levain) available is amazing, and good sourdough toasted is unbelievably delicious.

Mintyy · 14/09/2014 21:18

I agree that I find it incredibly hard to accommodate the mantra of "reject carbs and live on high quality protein and green leafy veg" when I already get WAY more than my fair share of the world's food and resources as it is.

Mintyy · 14/09/2014 21:20

And also, genuinely not being arsey, but why do people cite primal/paleo as being the ultimate in good nutrition, when no one lived beyond the age of 50 then anyway?

motherinferior · 14/09/2014 21:22

And that's if we'd survived illness, accident or successive childbirths.

calla I came across this a few months ago

All true, obviously...

RiverTam · 14/09/2014 21:22

I read in The Times, I think, in some health or nutrition column, that since the Second World War, white bread flour has been fortified, a la cereal - is that right? So really, in a way, it's better for you than brown.

We moved on to white bread when I was weaning DD as I thought brown too fibrous (and she's veggie anyway so not in need of any more fibre!), these days she prefers brown for sandwiches and white for toast. Brown makes me feel a bit ill these days.

MsUumellmahaye · 14/09/2014 21:28

Ha mintyy i always say this!! Life expectancy was about 40. Its humans diversity to eat grains etc that has made us so successful. All things in moderatiom. Am away for some toastGrin

FrancesNiadova · 14/09/2014 21:34

I make my own white bread & slather it with proper butter, ( not that yellow chemical stuff), & it's bl**dy luffly! Blush

Dreadedsunnyday · 14/09/2014 21:37

It is the Coldplay of bread. Boring and devoid of any appeal.

I can't tolerate any bread at all these days sadly but if I were to eat any it would be something full of seeds, grains and taste.

gordyslovesheep · 14/09/2014 21:40

I like white bread occassionaly, but when I look at the ingredients on the pack I feel a bit Confused
such a long list.

I bake myself because industrial bread makes dh fart like a pig and my basic bread has only 5 ingredients: flour, water, oil, yeast, salt.

greenbananas · 14/09/2014 21:47

My boys are under care of hospital dietitian (allergies) and she says they should eat white bread.

Apparently, too much fibre is bad for young children, and prevents them from absorbing vit c and other nutrients they need.

Wheat is only bad for those folk who are genuinely allergic or intolerant to it. For the rest of us, it's a pretty reasonable food.

Minty, I think the palaeolithic diet might be a good thing for those who can afford it - probably the early age of dying was related to lack of modern medicine, greater chance of accidents and dying in childbirth etc.

GaryShitpeas · 14/09/2014 21:50

No idea I love white bread Grin

superstarheartbreaker · 14/09/2014 21:54

Since I started eating bread again I've gone up a dress size. Shame as I love it and love baking it.

londonrach · 14/09/2014 21:58

Im ok with french bread too. Its that brown heavy bread that sends me toilet bound....

BigChocFrenzy · 14/09/2014 21:59

White bread has to be fortified with B-vitamins to replace the missing nutrients from processing, so wholegrain is generally more nutritious and lower Gi.
However, white bread is better for those who have problems with too much fibre, e.g. IBS sufferers or young DCs.
Whatever works for your individual bod.

We evolved to be omnivores and people in different countries thrive on many different diets.
Some folk have food intolerances or allergies, but most of us would be healthy eating lots of veg plus moderate amounts of grains, dairy, eggs, meat/fish, fat, legumes, fruit - all of which are foods demonised by one clique or another. Veganism for moral reasons is a different case.
